Artist Selects: Frances Stark, Periodic Love and Perpetual War | Los Angeles County Museum of Art
Jun 13–Nov 9, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
Since the 1990s, Los Angeles–based artist Frances Stark has created a vast body of work that examines systems of communication and the nature of intimacy. She is the second participant in the Artist Selects series, which invites artists to create an exhibition with works from LACMA’s Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies. Guided by formal and thematic rhymes, Stark’s visual essay brings together works by Karl Blossfeldt, Otto Dix, Wassily Kandinsky, Käthe Kollwitz, and others. In a world that is out of joint, Stark grapples with questions about the role of the artist amid the cycles of passion, creation, and violent destruction that characterize the human experience.

The series establishes a catalog and archive of acrylic on canvas paintings which serves as an abstract geometric guide for identifying the forces of power within a state control apparatus while simultaneously generating discourse on the militarization of Cuban civil society.
Anne Appleby: Array | Parrasch Heijnen Gallery
Jun 14–Aug 2, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
parrasch heijnen presents Anne Appleby: Array, the gallery’s second solo exhibition with the Montana-based artist (b. 1954, Harrisburg, PA). Anne Appleby observes the natural environment in her rural Montana surroundings and across North America through an acute awareness of color. The artist’s edge-to-edge color field paintings are composed of multi-panel works often in grid form, revealing chromatic shifts in the context of sequential development. Each panel is a complex and luminous documentation of time, encapsulating the potentiality of the regeneration of the natural world and its cycles.
Strings Attached: Queering Proximities | Luis De Jesus Los Angeles
Jun 14–Jul 19, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles

Li Ran: The Signs are Present | Lisson Gallery
Jun 27–Aug 23, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
Lisson Gallery is pleased to present The Signs are Present, the first solo exhibition in Los Angeles by Li Ran. Comprising nine, recent, oil-on-canvas works—including some of the largest paintings the artist has made to date—this exhibition marks a discernable evolution in Li’s practice, wherein his focus has shifted toward the material and formal qualities of painting. Known for his cross-disciplinary approach, which spans video, performance, writing, and installation, Li often interrogates systems of ideology, cultural translation, and intellectual history. In this new body of work, he deliberately tempers the satirical and conceptual strategies that defined his earlier projects—where appropriation and narrative construction played central roles—in favor of a quieter, more ambiguous visual language. Here, narrative intent becomes more elusive, embedded subtly rather than explicitly articulated.
CHRISTINA KIMEZE | Hauser & Wirth
Jun 28–Oct 4, 2025 (UTC-8)
West Hollywood
For her first solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth, British artist Christina Kimeze will present new paintings that explore the complexity of interior spaces, both domestic and psychological. Vibrant and uniquely textured, her canvases depict ethereal interiors, landscapes and figures—either solitary or intimately connected—with an air of mystery and mutability. Tactility is an essential element of these works.
Y.Z. Kami: The Domes | Beverly Hills
Jun 28–Aug 15, 2025 (UTC-8)
Beverly Hills
Gagosian presents The Domes, an exhibition of paintings by Y.Z. Kami. The presentation brings together two bodies of work by the artist: a survey of Dome paintings made from 2011 to the present, and a group of new Messenger paintings. The exhibition marks a meaningful return to the West Coast for Kami—he spent his early years in Northern California after moving to the United States from Tehran in 1973, and Southern California has played host to a number of his institutional presentations, including a solo exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art nearly a decade ago.
James Jarvaise & Henry Taylor. Sometimes a straight line has to be crooked | Hauser & Wirth
Jun 29–Oct 5, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
‘Sometimes a straight line has to be crooked’ is the first exhibition to put the work of Henry Taylor, one of today’s most celebrated painters, in dialogue with that of his teacher, California modernist James Jarvaise (1924 – 2015). Taylor explores an idea he has long carried: to pay homage to Jarvaise—an artist who saw something special in him as a student in the 1980s—through an exhibition. Composed along loosely thematic lines and consisting largely of paintings, this major installation spans the 1950s to the present, with new works created especially for the show by Taylor, whose interest in landscape, alongside the figure, is freshly explored. The first exhibition of Taylor’s work to take place at Hauser & Wirth in Los Angeles, the title is taken from advice Jarvaise imparted to his student: the words of a vital teacher who offered Taylor many lessons on how to build a painting with integrity.
Tracing Performance, Fictions of Display | The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles
Jun 29, 2025–Mar 1, 2026 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
This exhibition highlights works from the MOCA permanent collection that engage with the not always obvious relationship between objects, theater, and performance. Tracing Performance, Fictions of Display builds upon Claes Oldenburg’s The Store (1961-62), a performative project that staged the commercial transaction of selling an artwork in a bodega-like environment, as well as other economies determined by gestures, transactions, and bodies in works by Colette (or her alter ego Justine), Rebecca Horn, Brian Jurgen, Mike Kelley, Terence Koh, Beverly Semmes, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Martine Syms, among others. Several works on view have never been exhibited at MOCA before, including the painting Monsieur On Sait Qui (1982), by influential Polish theater director and happening artist Tadeusz Kantor; the five-channel video installation Big Hunt (2002) by Catherine Sullivan, who was trained as an actor as well as visual artist, and performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s photograph The Loneliness of the Immigrant (1979 - 2011).
MOCA Focus: Takako Yamaguchi | The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles
Jun 29, 2025–Mar 1, 2026 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
MOCA Focus: Takako Yamaguchi is the third exhibition in the recently relaunched MOCA Focus series, which presents an artist’s first solo museum show in Los Angeles and centers on new or discrete bodies of work. Born in Okayama, Japan, in 1952, Yamaguchi moved to the U.S. in the early 1970s and began to appropriate imagery from sources as diverse as Mexican muralism, Renaissance art, Japanese Nihonga, and Art Nouveau in ornate paintings that pose a challenge to rigid notions of ethnic identity and cultural ownership. At age seventy-two, the Los Angeles–based artist is synthesizing the motifs she has developed over the past forty years in a series of archly stylized oil-and-bronze-leaf seascapes featured in this exhibition. Yamaguchi’s precise yet luscious paintings incorporate her “Eastern” and “Western”-influenced vocabulary of abstract zigzags, spirals, and braids to denote natural forms like rain, waves, and mountains, representing a culmination of her decades-long provocations of style, taste, and identity.
Luchita Hurtado. Yo Soy | Hauser & Wirth
Jun 29–Oct 5, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
Over the course of her eight-decade career, Venezuelan-born, Los Angeles-based artist Luchita Hurtado (1920 – 2020) committed to a lifelong journey of personal and artistic evolution defined by ceaseless experimentation. The first exhibition devoted to the artist at Hauser & Wirth in Los Angeles, ‘Yo Soy’ (I Am) brings together paintings and drawings from a pivotal moment in Hurtado’s career: Inspired by the surge of feminist activism in LA, the artist held her first solo exhibition at the Woman’s Building in February 1974, debuting her Linear Language series of expressive, geometric word paintings. A half century on, ‘Yo Soy’ revisits that landmark presentation and includes never-before-seen works from the series it introduced. Through her vibrant, abstract canvases—some cut up and meticulously resewn—visitors will be able to experience the depth of Hurtado’s exploration of pattern, mysticism, the earth and the cosmos.

Jun 14, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
A love story in the city of dreams . . .
Perhaps no other LA film is so steeped in the mythos and mystery of our complex city and its spectres of burning hopes and broken dreams as
David Lynch
's
MULHOLLAND DRIVE
(2001). As part of
YesterdayLA,
the Philosophical Research Society’s monthlong exploration of Los Angeles history, 7th House Screenings is proud to present the late master's
enigmatic dream logic masterpiece,
one of the most monumental works of 21st Century cinema and one of the greatest Los Angeles films ever made.
This special screening will be
accompanied by an appearance and performance by the film's Club Silencio "Llorando" chanteuse, Rebekah Del Rio
!
Blonde Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) has only just arrived in Hollywood to become a movie star when she meets an enigmatic brunette with amnesia (Laura Harring). Meanwhile, as the two set off to solve the second woman’s identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project. Of its plot, The New York Times's A.O. Scott wrote, "Its tangled story will be experienced by some as an offense against narrative order, but the film is an intoxicating liberation from sense, with moments of feeling all the more powerful for seeming to emerge from the murky night world of the unconscious."
Lynch’s seductive and scary vision of Los Angeles’s dream factory is one of the true masterpieces of the new millennium, a tale of love, jealousy, and revenge like no other. Do not miss your chance to see this shadowy, "poisonous valentine to Hollywood" in one of the city's oldest centers for esoteric mysteries – replete with an unforgettable performance by
Rebekah Del Rio

Olafur Eliasson: Open | Los Angeles
Sep 15, 2024–Jul 6, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
In September 2024, Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967, Copenhagen; lives and works in Berlin) presents a new site-specific installation made for The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. In line with Eliasson’s career-long exploration of light and color, geometry, and environmental awareness, the installation playfully engages with material and immaterial qualities of the museum’s architecture. A series of large-scale optical devices designed specifically for MOCA Geffen will respond to the building itself, as well as to the everchanging atmosphere of Los Angeles. Visitors will encounter a dazzling range of sensory experiences that harness the laws of geometric optics to address feelings and concepts of embodiment, perception, and participation.
