A Musical Whisky Tasting | Machair Bar

May 31, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Glasgow
Cultural Experiences
After sold out shows in Scandinavia in 2024, whisky ambassador and award-nominated Nordic/Celtic folk composer and musician Christine Kammerer is ready with a new "Musical Whisky Tasting". A tasting focused on the cultural connections between Scotland and Scandinavia, and how this can be tasted in whisky, witnessed in shared traditions and folklore, and heard in music which that balances between the soundscapes of Nordic and Celtic. Each piece, each story carefully selected to heighten the experience of the 5 whiskies you will taste throughout the event. Taking place just after Beltane and on the cusp of the Summer Solstice, the event will have a certain seasonal twist. Tickets are available on Danish-Scottish Society's website right here: https://www.danishscottishsociety.com/product-page/danish-scottish-whisky-tasting-in-glasgow BIOGRAPHY Christine Kammerer is a whisky ambassador, singer and composer. She is one of the co-producers of the 5-star, critically acclaimed, award-nominated musical whisky experience “Whisky & Witches", which has toured 4 countries and sold out 25 shows. This ex-mentee of the OurWhisky Foundation Mentorship co-founded a whisky club in Denmark 7 years ago, and upon arriving in Scotland worked for 2 years as an Experience Ambassador and Performance Artist at Johnnie Walker Princes Street. Whisky has been a passion of Kammerer’s for 16 years, and after only 3 years of working in the industry, she has developed a style of whisky tasting, rooted in the intersection between music, shared cultural heritage, and whisky, which makes her sought after in both Scotland, Scandinavia and Germany. On top of her career in whisky, for the past 7 years she has specialised in ancient Nordic/Viking age/Celtic music, and the intercultural and musical connections between Scotland and Scandinavia. Specialising in the Viking era she has worked with national museums, festivals and venues in the UK, Scandinavia and Germany, and her band Jotunger (formerly Gjaldulei) is one of the most sought after Viking/folk fusion bands in Denmark. Listen to her productions on all streaming platforms and here: https://christinekammerer.bandcamp.com Kammerer has performed at several whisky festivals and worked with many brands including: Johnnie Walker Princes Street (UK), Spirit of Speyside Festival (UK), Feìs Ìle (UK), Torabhaig Distillery (UK), Belfast Whiskey Festival (NIR), Copenhagen Distillery (DK), Tunsberg Whisky Festival (NO), Pure.Whisky (GER), and Celtic Castle (GER). Simon Fisher Turner: In the Shadow of the Sun | University of Glasgow Concert Hall

May 2, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Glasgow
Arts
Theater
Simon Fisher Turner: In the Shadow of the Sun The images of In the Shadow of the Sun are fused with scarlets, oranges and pinks. The degradation caused by the refilming of multiple images gives them a shimmering mystery / energy, like Monet’s Nympheas , or haystacks in the sunset. There is no narrative in the film. The first viewers wracked their brains for a meaning instead of relaxing into the ambient tapestry of random images. The language is there and it is conveyed – and you don’t know what to say until you have said it . You can dream of lands far distant . (Derek Jarman, Dancing Ledge , 1984). In the Shadow of the Sun has been described as Derek Jarman’s ‘Super 8 masterpiece’. It was assembled from a dozen different short films made c. 1972-74, including pieces such as Journey to Avebury and Fire Island , which Jarman cut together and superimposed to create a new work. The resulting film is a testament to his experimental boldness, his fondness for revisiting and reimagining past motifs, and to the intensity and brilliance of his vision. In 1981, the renowned group Throbbing Gristle created a new soundtrack for a screening of In the Shadow of the Sun at the Berlin Film Festival. Such transformations of Jarman’s film works through music have continued into recent times, with his frequent collaborator Simon Fisher Turner making a new score in 2021 for the version of My Very Beautiful Movie currently showing at The Hunterian Art Gallery as part of Digging in Another Time: Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature . He also devised new music for the live performance Blue Now , presented at Tramway in November last year as part of the exhibition programme. For this special, one-off event screening of In the Shadow of Sun , Turner will present new music to accompany a stretched version of the film. It is a unique opportunity to see and hear one of Jarman’s key artistic partners continue their creative dialogue. To mark this occasion, The Hunterian has extended its opening hours so that visitors can see the exhibition before attending the concert. In the Shadow of the Sun is screened with kind permission of James Mackay and LUMA Foundation. This event is presented in partnership between Thinking Culture and Music in the University, in response to the Hunterian's exhibition, Digging in Another Time: Derek Jarman's Modern Nature. Simon Fisher Turner Composer Simon Fisher Turner is renowned for his film soundtrack work which started with Derek Jarman, for whom he scored many feature films - from Caravaggio (1986), through to Jarman’s final work Blue (1993). Caravaggio began a long relationship with the BFI, and more recently Fisher Turner composed the score for restorations of three silent films, Un Chant D’Amour dir. Jean Genet (1950), The Great White Silence dir. Herbert Ponting (1924) and The Epic of Everest dir. Captain John Noel (1924), winning a prestigious Ivor Novello Award for the soundtrack to The Epic of Everest. He has also composed film music for Mike Hodges, Michael Almareyda, Isao Yamada. His various collaborators over the years include Ruicki Sakamoto, Gina Birch, Deux Filles, The Derek Jarman Lab, and The Elysian Collective. With a career as varied and diverse as his current projects, Simon Fisher Turner began as a young actor in Tom Brown’s Schooldays, and in between then and now has released records under his own name and as The King Of Luxembourg and Deux Filles. Accessibility Information on the University of Glasgow Concert Hall can be found here . Information Source: School of Culture & Creative Arts | eventbrite

We are excited to present a bold programme of newly commissioned works by artists Sooun Kim, Greer Pester, and Jamie Fitzpatrick. Selected from the Outer Spaces network of studio holders, this is a unique opportunity for the artists to make new, ambitious work in response to one of our most historic spaces. Responding to the former Clydesdale banking hall at 31 St Vincent Place, Glasgow, these works explore the building’s symbolic relationship to power, stability, and prosperity—qualities embedded in the fabric of this iconic Victorian structure. At the same time, the artists engage with the building’s current, transitory state, where past and present converge.
