Electroacoustic music in the twenty-first century is both a local and a global art form. It is at once capable of expressing the local knowledge and culture of the many geographical regions in which it has taken root, notably with the many important electronic music studios that were founded in Japan, Africa, India, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe; and of bringing together different cultures, genres, forms, and sounds, whether through practices of deliberate hybridisation and fusion, or via juxtaposition and contrast. The Birmingham Jane Jacobs Walk and Award’s Launch, 3 rd May 2025 1-4pm Join us to celebrate the renowned American urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs as we explore Birmingham’s architectural landscape. Jacobs was born on 4 May 1916, and walks are held annually around the world in her honour. Save Smallbrook are delighted to invite you to the inaugural Birmingham Jane Jacobs Walk on Saturday 3rd May 2025, led by Mike Dring (Birmingham Modernist Society) and Joe Holyoak (C20 Society West Midlands). Beginning at 1pm at Station Street, we’ll visit celebrated and at-risk buildings across Birmingham city centre, finishing at 4pm at Graham Winteringham’s masterpiece the Repertory Theatre on Centenary Square. Highlights include New Street Signal Box (Bicknell and Hamilton, 1965) and the recently restored Grand Hotel (Thomson Plevins, 1879), together with at-risk buildings Smallbrook Ringway Centre (James Roberts, 1962), and Corporation Square (Frederick Gibberd, 1971).
