The Fossil Swamp | Castle

May 18, 2019–Mar 2, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
Castle
Exhibitions
This new exhibition reveals a snapshot in time from 300 million years ago - when a vast tropical swamp covered what is now Wales. The Fossil Swamp had monster plants, giant insects, thunderstorms and floods. Beautifully preserved fossils tell us about these ancient tropical wetlands. Come and see the remains of strange plants which lived millions of years before flowers and fruits ever evolved. The prehistoric animals were also very different to those living today. What strange creatures will you find lurking in the swamp? Some of the fossils on display, including the huge 3D centrepiece Stigmaria, come from the world-class heritage site at Brymbo in north east Wales. The Brymbo fossils reveal exactly how some of these giant plants grew. It’s rare to find these remains preserved in 3D at such size because most plant fossils from other sites come from broken pieces of plants that drifted through the swamp’s waterways. You can also learn about the experts who figured out how these prehistoric plants lived. Finally we show how the story of the fossil swamp links to the fossil fuel and climate problems we face today.

Art of the Selfie | Castle

Mar 16, 2024–Jan 26, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
Castle
Exhibitions
Is a self-portrait the original selfie? Our exciting new Amgueddfa Cymru exhibition Art of the Selfie explores and asks this question, looking at how artists through time, from Rembrandt and Van Gogh to Bedwyr Williams and Anya Paintsil, see and represent themselves. Throughout history, many artists have used self-portraits as ways to explore their identities and express themselves to the world. Van Gogh painted no fewer than thirty-five self-portraits and so became arguably one of the most recognizable faces in Western art. This exhibition will feature Van Gogh’s Portrait of the Artist (1887), which is on loan from Musée d’Orsay, Paris. Joining Van Gogh will be a selection of artists from the national collection of Wales, including Together they showcase a wide range of different methods and artistic approaches to the concept of the self-portrait. Self-portraits and selfies are two different things, but they do have something in common - both are used to show who you are as a person. Out of all the ways we document our lives, selfies have become a popular method of self-expression and individualism. The works on display show the different ways in which artists have chosen to characterize themselves in the same way we present and share images of ourselves today. How do you see yourself?

The Ethics and Ideologies of Self-Defence | School of Journalism, Media and Culture

Nov 6, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cardiff
Sports & Fitness
What are the ethics and ideologies of self-defence? Self-defence has a variety of legal and ideological cultural histories, shapes and forms (Bowman, 2023; Dodsworth, 2015). Scholars have shown that, in different countries, at different times, the right to self-defence has been heavily allocated to certain subjects (e.g., white, propertied, male) and withheld from others (Light, 2017). Others have shown the extent to which women’s self-defence was a significant element of the first wave of the feminist movement in the UK (Dodsworth, 2019; Godfrey, 2012), and argued that learning how to fight and be aggressive may be an enabling and potentially emancipatory element of physical feminism (McCaughey, 1997). But, as philosopher Elsa Dorlin asks (Dorlin, 2022), is self-defence ethical? Is teaching self-defence ethical, and who can or should teach whom? What should be taught, to whom, and based on what qualifications? Where does self-defence begin and end? Where does the ‘self’ to be defended start and end, and what are the limits of ‘defence’ – the body, the mind, clothing, technology, architecture, or the physical management of space? Ultimately, as philosopher Peter Sloterdijk has argued, almost everything that humans have done to ward off one or another kind of threat might be viewed as self-defence (Sloterdijk, 2013). This symposium starts from the most conventional understanding of ‘self-defence’: as learned, taught and practiced interpersonal, face-to-face, body-to-body skills, training, techniques, tactics, strategies, rationales, outlooks and ideologies. It asks: What are the sociocultural, demographic, physical, emotional, psychological and other dimensions to be considered (e.g., gender, race, class, age, nationality, etc.)?What ideologies does self-defence derive from and feed into? What fantasies, phobias and fears? How is the threat to be defended against imagined, and with what connection to empirically observable reality? How has media affected self-defence discourse and practice – from the classic moral panics of newspapers and TV news, to filmic representations, the internet, CCTV, and gaming? Our premise is that interpersonal self-defence is a more complicated and controversial ethical, ideological and political matter than it may at first appear. Since 2017, she has left an indelible mark on international stages, where her collaboration with circus artist Villads Bugge Bang has led her to innovative performances that mix flamenco, body percussion and physical theatre - and that have contributed to her unique style. Rebeca continues to explore new artistic horizons, participating in projects that fuse flamenco with other forms of cultural expression, such as her recent collaboration with the famous band “PATAX”, where she fuses the movements of Michael Jackson with flamenco, and in the production “KALASETU” in London, a show that fuses traditional flamenco art with classical Indian music and dance. Her passion and versatility have established her as a prominent figure on the current flamenco scene. Join us for an evening of stories and song in one of Cardiff’s most intimate music venues at St John’s church in Canton, CF5 1NX Tickets £7 in advance/ £9 on the door ----------------------------------------------------- Siobhan McCrudden Described as “a singer who is gifted with one of the finest voices in contemporary UK folk music”, Cardiff-based Siobhan crafts songs of intensity and sweetness, recounting personal stories whilst reflecting a vivid fascination with dark folk tales and superstitions. Raised in London to parents with Scottish and Irish roots, her vocal leanings reflect early memories of folk musicians at family gatherings and a strong desire to connect with these emotive beginnings. Not afraid of embracing matters personal in her songwriting, Siobhan describes her single and title track from her debut album ‘Icarus Girl’, with its infectious shuffling rhythm and a nod to Americana, as a song about “the experience of falling in love having the power to resurrect old hope you thought long gone”. In a 5* album review, R’n’R Magazine described Siobhan’s voice as “a glowing lamp on a string that loops back to Shelagh McDonald and Joni Mitchell’. Siobhan has showcased her music at numerous events, both large and intimate, including Wales’ largest platform for musicians, Focus Wales in Wrexham, Hubfestival Cardiff, Roath Folk Festival, How The Light Gets In Festival in Hay and at Acapela Studios. ‘Absolutely beautiful, just stunning, the voice is something else’ – BBC Radio Wales ‘Siobhan McCrudden really does have a voice of great intensity and beauty’ – NewSoundWales ‘There is a clear debt in Siobhan’s sound to early Joni Mitchell albums. There is also a definite familiarity with late sixties British folk bands such as Fairport Convention and Pentangle in her cultural hinterland.” – From the Margins ----------------------------------------------------- JacksorJacksor Multi-instrumental chamber pop ensemble JacksorJacksor is the current musical vehicle of former Albatross Archive frontperson Richard Jackson. Since forming the ensemble for the recording of 2023's EP GoodChaos, JacksorJacksor has continued to evolve, taking inspiration from the likes of Scott Walker, Black Country, New Road, and Want-era Rufus Wainwright. They are currently working on songs for the upcoming 2024 release, based around a new year's resolution to write a song a month during 2024 (known as the _sam_songs ). Information Source: eventbrite
