Angelica Kauffman RA was one of the most celebrated artists of the 18th century. In this major exhibition, we trace her trajectory from child prodigy to one of Europe's most sought-after painters. Known for her celebrity portraits and pioneering history paintings, Angelica Kauffman helped to shape the direction of European art. She painted some of the most influential figures of her day – queens, countesses, actors and socialites – and she reinvented the genre of history painting by focusing largely on female protagonists from classical history and mythology. This exhibition covers Kauffman’s life and work: her rise to fame in London, her role as a founding member of the Royal Academy and her later career in Rome where her studio became a hub for the city’s cultural life. See paintings and preparatory drawings by Kauffman, including some of her finest self-portraits, her celebrated ceiling paintings for the Royal Academy’s first home in Somerset House, as well as history paintings of subjects including Circe and Cleopatra, and discover the remarkable life of the artist whom one of her contemporaries described as “the most cultivated woman in Europe”.

A multi-sensory exhibition opening at Glasgow Print Studio will look at new connections between Scotland and Mauritius. Part of the city-wide Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, the exhibition curated by artists Rudy Kanhye & Lauren La Rose will explore the possibilities of transcultural solidarity whilst delving into the realms of postcolonialism, environmental change, and the politics of migration. Through touch, heat, taste and play, each body wakes up on a wave will explore the entanglements and tensions that characterise creole pluricultural landscapes while underscoring Mauritian diaspora as a case study for transculturalism and alterity. Each body wakes up on a wave will intertwine new artwork, archival visuals, innovative textile installations, and photographs sourced from archives and libraries in Mauritius and the UK. Through thorough research conducted in Mauritius in February 2024, in collaboration with the Aapravasi Ghat trust, National Library of Mauritius, and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, the artists behind the exhibition have uncovered compelling narratives of migrant diasporas in the global south. This extensive research served as the foundation for distilling fragments of this rich and complex history, utilising historical records to provide a contextual framework for our understanding of the present. This exhibition will delve into the collective memories of individuals who embody migrant communities, shedding light on diverse geopolitical narratives, systems of labour and untold new economies built by underrepresented women and their resonance within the broader experiences of diasporic individuals.
