Palaver Strings' 'but there is this' | Mechanics' Hall
Apr 25, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Portland
But There Is This
explores our journey through life and our quest for meaning, even when it remains elusive. In works by
Corigliano
,
Mustonen
,
Yoshimatsu
, and
Shostakovich,
fragments of themes and ideas emerge over time, slowly and imperfectly revealing themselves as part of a larger whole. Each piece takes us on a journey through extreme emotions which are rarely resolved, challenging us to perceive beauty in the small details that make up our lives, even when the whole remains unclear. This program reminds us, in the words of Barabara Ras, that “there is the voice you can still summon at will, like your mother’s/it will always whisper, you can’t have it all, but there is this.”
Friday, April 25 at 7:00 pm (doors 6:30 PM), approximately 90-minutes.
There is a $3 ticket surcharge on the day of the performance.

HYBRID Sneak-Peek-Fundraiser for The Divergent Gift; Unboxing Autism | Kiln
Apr 25, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Portland
The Divergent Gift; Unboxing Autism
is a feature length documentary project, produced by an international team of Autistic and Neurodivergent creatives. Capturing the complicated zeitgeist amid this rising diagnosis demographic, The Divergent Gift touches firmly on the exposed nerve of the neurodiversity movement—uniquely combining intimate, subject-led stories of truly diverse lives, with vibrant and visceral animated sequences that immerse viewers into these experiences like no film before it.
With DEI programs and efforts under attack, join us from anywhere in the world for this HYBRID event dedicated to fostering greater acceptance of neurodiversity. This film focuses on deepening positive Autistic Identity through visualizing the various unseen challenges, gifts, abilities, and interests of those labeled as a (so called) “mild” presentation of the autism spectrum. The Divergent Gift also weaves in the profoundly intimate personal journey of filmmaker, Bret Malley, exposing exactly what it means to wonder, and ultimately answer—am I in the spectrum?
In addition to getting a sneak peek, hear live Q and A with some of the Autistic subjects and creatives, and help us raise funds for the final stages of post production, including hiring the film Composer and Colorist, both of whom are also Autistic. Together we can get this documentary across the finish line and out into the world so everyone can see it!

Deep Peace Immersion: A Healing Yin Yoga and Mantra Sound Bath Sanctuary | Dance With Joy Studios
Apr 26, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Portland
Join us for a deep dive to release the tension and anxiety that clouds our vision, reconnect with the love in our hearts and get nourished cellularly and soul-ularly by powerful, soothing sound vibration.
We’ll open with the deep, gentle release of a yin yoga class led by Tara Michele, with live music by Chay Tanya Lila and her mantra band. Tara will guide us into long-held, passive postures designed to target the deeper connective tissues. Through mindful breathwork and meditative awareness, you’ll create space to soften into each posture, allowing gravity to do the work while you explore the subtle shifts within. This practice is perfect for reducing stress, increasing flexibility, and creating space—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Then, we’ll support nervous system repair by entraining a theta brainwave state through spiritual sound. Tom Lange of Sound and Soul Awakening, one of Portland’s most experienced sound healers, will lead a full band in creating an immersive sonic experience that promotes restoration and coherence. With his famous traveling didgeridoo, Tom will powerwash each person individually with a head-to-toe personal sound bath. Finally, we’ll tap into the resonating power of our bodies and seal in the healing with a vibrational mantra circle and prayerful kirtan before sharing tea and nourishing homemade treats.
Please arrive and get settled between 2:45-3pm, class will start promptly at 3pm
This event is part of a weekend-long series of events that provide an introduction and deep dive into mantra meditation in all its forms. Email us at
portland@kirtanpnw.com
for an invite to join a walking meditation at Tryon Creek State Natural Area on Saturday morning before class, and join us Sunday evening for a mantra dance party at Brindge Space.

Teacher bios
Chay Tanya Lila
As a meditation teacher, kirtan leader and somatic practitioner, Chay Tanya Lila brings a lifetime of hard-won lessons to the programs she leads, gently encouraging us to let go and cultivate a taste for the sweetness of surrender. Together with her band, she leads weekly kirtans in Portland as well as throughout the Pacific Northwest. Her mission is to make the practices of bhakti yoga and mantra meditation accessible to everyone, to help reweave our social fabric and support soul-level community.
Tom Lange
With over 28 years of experience as a sound healer and lifelong musician, Tom guides transformative journeys through the healing vibrations of the didgeridoo, gongs, and Tibetan singing bowls. His practice is rooted in a soul-deep connection to sound and a commitment to channeling frequencies that restore the body and spirit to their natural state of harmony. Tom is a master at holding space for sound to do what it naturally does—unlock the healing already within you. Together with his partner Aiyana McKenzie, Tom offers sound healing for individuals, couples, and groups and is the creator of the Sonic Brain Massage™—a powerful headphone experience for healing.
Tara Michele
Tara is a devotional yoga teacher, guiding students into a space of inner exploration to cultivate presence, resilience, and self-awareness. Drawing from her own journey of mindfulness and movement, Tara creates experiences that integrate breathwork, meditation, and intentional movement, offering a practice that is both physically grounding and internally expansive.

Creative Healing for New Selves and New Worlds (BIPOC only) | APANO Communities United Fund (CUF)
Apr 27, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Portland
In this workshop,
delve into the purpose of your creativity and dismantle structures that inhibit your creativity from flowing naturally
. This is the time to embrace your own rhythm and cadence as an "artist".
Being creative is embedded in our nature as humans. As an creative human, you have your own sense of timing, of vision, of method. These creative patterns are also learned from community, family, culture, and country.
Our society defines "the artist" as a particular thing distinct and separate from society. It fails to help us see the ways in which we are each artists in our everyday life creating beauty in the world around us and making in the most mundane moments. As a result, we can be completely oblivious to our natural creative talents, believing the word "artist" applies to the few who do it professionally. If we identify as "an artist", we can lose track of what feels good in being creative, trying to do what others expect we should do.
To center and honor your own rhythm and cadence as an "artist" can bring you a great sense of flow, of grounding, and improved boundaries with this world. There is something magical that happens when you own who you are and how you flow - outside of any external expectations.
All skill levels are welcome from long-timers, newbies, and everyone in between. All varieties of artists and mediums are welcome too!
