Author Event: Venessa Vida Kelley | WHEN THE TIDES HELD THE MOON | Bards Alley Bookshop
May 6, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Vienna
Join us at Bards Alley for a discussion with author and illustrator Venessa Vida Kelley. They will be talking about their newest release with Erewhon Books, When the Tides Held the Moon, a romantic, historical fantasy set in 1910s New York City following a young Puerto Rican immigrant and his journey of love and self-discovery, complete with gorgeous illustrations by the author themself. The event will take place at Bards Alley Bookshopin Vienna, VA on Tuesday, May 6th at 6:00PM. You may reserve a book under your name as an add-on, but additional copies will be available for purchase during the event, and Venessa will be signing copies after their discussion. About the book:
Benigno “Benny” Caldera knows an orphaned Boricua blacksmith in 1910s New York City can’t call himself an artist. But the ironwork tank he creates for famed Coney Island playground, Luna Park, astounds everyone, especially the eccentric side-show proprietor who commissioned it. Benny’s work earns him an invitation to join the show’s eclectic crew of performers—his first welcome in the city—and share in their astonishing secret: the tank Benny built is a cage for their newest exhibit, a living, breathing, in-the-flesh merman stolen from the banks of the East River under a gleaming full moon. The merman is more than a mythic marvel, though. Benny comes to know Río as a clever philosopher, an observant traveler, and a kindred spirit more beautiful and compassionate than any human he’s ever met. Despite their different worlds, what begins as a friendship of necessity deepens to love, leading Benny’s heart into uncharted waters where he can no longer ignore the agonizing truth of Río’s captivity—and his own. A cage is no place for a merman to survive. Though releasing Río means betraying his new family, bankrupting their home, and losing his soulmate forever, Benny must look within for the courage to do what’s right, and find a love strong enough to free them both.

On Romance and Romantasy: Authors April Asher and Tif Marcelo | Bards Alley Bookshop
May 23, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Vienna
Join us for a discussion between romance authors April Asher and Tif Marcelo to celebrate the recent release of both of their respective novels, A Simple Twist of Fate and Love Letters from the Trail. They will cover all things re: romantic fiction, from romantasy vs. romantic fantasy to more contemporary romance and rom-coms. Books will be on sale during the event, and the authors will be signing copies after their discussion and audience Q&A. The event will take place at Bards Alley Bookshop on Saturday, May 23rd at 5:00pm. We hope to see you there! About A SIMPLE TWIST OF FATE: A witch and a shifter get a second chance at love in this new paranormal romantic comedy from USA Today Bestselling author April Asher. At the bright-eyed age of eighteen, witch Harlow “Harry” Pierce attended her first Fates Haven Finding Ceremony certain the Blue Willow Wisp would lead her to her Fated match, her cougar shifter boyfriend, Jaxon Atwood. But Fate had other plans, guiding her best friend to him instead. With a broken heart, all her belongings, and a vow to never return, Harry did the only thing a broken-hearted witch could do. Run. Thirteen years later, she returns to her magical hometown—with her half-human, half-shifter goddaughter in tow—hoping that not only would the town work its magic on the troubled teenager, but that the local Alpha of the Rocky Mountain Pack could help Grace identify—and control—her fiery abilities. Jaxon Atwood was a shifter of few words and even less patience… until his mother retired as Alpha of the Rocky Mountain Pack and left the running of things to him. It’s a headache he didn’t need, and one that brought the witch who’d ripped his heart from his chest knocking on his door. Ever since the disappearance of the town’s Fate Witch over a decade ago, Fates Haven’s magic has been slowly going haywire. There hasn’t been a Fated Match made in thirteen years, putting the town in serious jeopardy of losing its title of Most Fated Mates Per Population. But now, something is stirring in Fates Haven, Colorado, and it smells like the past, tastes like change, and looks like A SIMPLE TWIST OF FATE. About LOVE LETTERS FROM THE TRAIL: Military widow Evangeline Espiritu’s world turns topsy-turvy the minute wealthy Cruz Forrester invades the peaceful hiking trail behind her bucolic Virginia bed-and-breakfast. With the privacy of her business at stake, at least she has her trail pen pal, Rolling Stone, to pour her heart out to! After surviving cancer, Cruz is at a crossroads. And whatever he does seems to exasperate the attractive Filipina host, who’s alternately infuriating…and intriguing. His only outlet as the duo begins to spar? Writing to his captivating trail correspondent, Blue Moon—whose persona on the page starts to seem awfully familiar as Cruz’s battles with Eva soon blossom into something magical neither of them expected…

Author Event: Christina Hillsberg | AGENTS OF CHANGE | Bards Alley Bookshop
Jun 26, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Vienna
Join us at Bards Alley for a discussion between author and former CIA intelligence officer Christina Hillsberg and the Badass Women's Book Club founder Gina Warner. They will be in conversation about Christina's newest release, Agents of Change: The Women Who Transformed the CIA, an exploration of the pioneering women who changed the world of espionage, from the 1960s to present-day. The event will take place at Bards Alley Bookshop in Vienna, VA on Thursday, June 26th at 6:00PM. You may reserve a book under your name as an add-on, but additional copies will be available for purchase during the event, and Christina will be signing copies after her discussion. About the book:
Years after her successful and impactful career at the CIA, Christina Hillsberg became enthralled with the stories of the trailblazing women who forged new paths within the Agency long before she began her career there in the aughts. These were women who sacrificed their personal lives, risked their safety, defied expectations, and boldly navigated the male-dominated spy organization. Through exclusive interviews with current and former female CIA officers, many of whom have never spoken publicly, Agents of Change tells an enthralling and, at times, disturbing story set against the backdrop of the evolving women’s movement. It was in the 1960s, a “secretarial” era, when women first gained a foothold and pushed against the one-dimensional, pop-culture trope of the sexy Cold War Bond Girl. Underestimated but undaunted, they fought their way, decade by decade, through adversity to the top of the spy game. Seamlessly weaving together the individual stories of these exceptional women, Hillsberg deftly tackles not just the fight for gender equality at the CIA but also the current dilemma the Agency faces when dealing with the culmination of a decades-long culture of sexual harassment and assault. Each chapter sheds a light on women’s issues during a different decade before bringing to life the stories of female CIA operations officers whose experiences were emblematic of that given era. In this fascinating and empowering chronicle, Hillsberg takes readers inside the Agency in a way that’s never been done before, paying long-overdue tribute to the survivors and thrivers, the indispensable groundbreakers, and the defiant rabble-rousers who made the choice to change their lives and, in turn, changed history.
