ABOUT THE BOOK “Smart, achingly beautiful, and (yes) important: a gripping novel of climate cataclysm with a cast of characters I cared about deeply.” —Chris Bohjalian, #1New York Times–bestselling author ofThe Flight Attendant Separated by ten thousand years, a team of scientists and their test subject must work together to save the human species—before it’s too late . . . With humanity facing imminent extinction, Centauri Project scientists use technology originally designed for interstellar travel to send a test subject ten millennia into Earth’s future. Marooned in an uninhabited wilderness, microbiologist Nicholas Hindman searches for evidence of remnant populations. He has a protocol to follow and is determined to do so to the bitter end—though he knows he’s probably searching in vain, stranded on an empty planet silently orbiting the sun. Meanwhile, back in 2068 AD, a devastating hyperpandemic has quelled all talk of interstellar travel and thrown the future of humanity into grave doubt. Four surviving members of the Centauri team board a vintage solar-powered sailing yacht for a harrowing journey in search of a second test subject. Their destination is a small volcanic island north of Sicily rumored to harbor that rarest of creatures: a woman capable of getting pregnant, thereby ensuring this generation of Homo sapiens isn’t the last. But first they must make it halfway across the post-apocalyptic globe, risking heatwaves, oceanic megastorms, murderous gangs, deranged cult leaders, a volcanic eruption, and the dangerous microbes that continue to circulate through the planet’s atmosphere. A finalist for the Prism Prize for Climate Literature, The Afterlife Project encompasses a desperate quest for the key to the future of humanity, an impossible love story, and a search for meaning across the inconceivable vastness of geological time. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Tim Weed is the author of A Field Guide to Murder & Fly Fishing, Will Poole’s Island, and The Afterlife Project. A former international travel guide, Weed serves on Salve Regina University’s core faculty for the Newport MFA in creative writing and is a cofounder of the Cuba Writers Program. When not at his writing desk, he can most often be found skiing, fishing, or tending to his trees. Weed is based in Vermont but also spends time in Nantucket, Colorado, and the greater Boston area.

Robert P. Baird with Lucas Carmichael Live at Tattered Cover Colfax | Tattered Cover Colfax
Jul 11, 2025 (UTC-7)
Denver
Join this inspiring conversation with Robert P. Baird and Lucas Carmichael about The Nimbus, an exhilarating debut novel about a child whose literal enlightenment sets the stage for an exuberant tragicomedy of marriage, religion, and parenthoodon Friday, July 11th at 6:00 PM at our Colfax location. Registration includes the following options: A signed Hardcover copy of the book … ORA $5 Gift Card to Tattered Cover Book StoreWe will have a limited supply of additional books for guests to purchase in store. Only a book ticket guarantees you a copy of the book. If you are unable to attend the event after purchasing a ticket, you are required to pick up your copy of the book (with proof of purchase from your event registration) within 7 days after the event date. If the book is not picked up by that date, you relinquish your copy to Tattered Cover Book Store. ABOUT THE BOOK On an otherwise ordinary fall day on a university campus in Chicago, the toddler son of an ambitious divinity school professor named Adrian Bennett mysteriously starts to glow. The nimbus, as the strange, soft light comes to be known, offers no clues to its origin and frustrates every attempt at rational explanation.
Though the nimbus appears only intermittently, and not to everyone, the otherworldly glow quickly upends the lives of all those who encounter it, including Paul Harkin, Adrian’s broke and feckless graduate student, who likes being a graduate student a little too much for his own good; Renata Bennett, Adrian’s omnicompetent wife, who can’t see her son glowing even though the nimbus is turning her life upside down; and Warren Kayita, a down-on-his-luck librarian and aging div school alumnus on the run from a violent criminal. As news about the nimbus spreads around the university and beyond, Adrian, Paul, Renata, and Warren are set on a collision course that will threaten their lives and put their deepest convictions to the test.
At once a rollicking intellectual satire, a searing portrait of a family in crisis, and a thrilling metaphysical page-turner, The Nimbus offers a comic and profound examination of the persistence of spiritual belief in a secular age and humanity’s timeless search for meaning. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Robert P. Baird holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and has worked as an editor at The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, The Paris Review, Esquire, and Chicago Review. He has written for all those publications, as well as for The New York Times, The London Review of Books, The Guardian, and Poetry, among others. ABOUT THE CONVERSATION PARTNER Lucas Carmichael grew up in Carbondale, went to Stanford, and received a PhD in Religion and Literature from the University of Chicago Divinity School. He lives in Boulder and teaches at Kent Denver School, where he focuses on world history, diplomacy, and human rights.

Important details:
The event will take place at Odell Brewing Fort Collins location.
This is an untimed, fun run. All levels of walkers, runners, and joggers are welcome.
This is an open course, meaning roads will NOT be closed. You are responsible for obeying all traffic laws and regulations.
We create each route to start and end at the brewery and to show off the surrounding neighborhood. The course will be marked with arrows and volunteers to help you know where to go.
You must bring a valid ID or driver's license. You do not need to be 21 to enjoy the event, but you must be 21 to enjoy the beer. Please drink responsibly. Registered, underage participants will receive a token for a FREE non-alcoholic beverage.
Our events are rain or shine! If conditions become unsafe to run, we will still hang out and drink beer.
There will not be a bag check; please plan accordingly and dress appropriately for the weather.
Dogs and strollers are welcome on the course, with care and caution. Please remember - you are running at your own risk on city sidewalks/streets/trails, which might not be suitable for your 4-legged and /or pint-size running buddies. You will also want to check with the brewery to make sure you can abide by their dog / underage policies. Please make the best decision possible for your crew.
Colorado Brewery Running Series merchandise, including shirts, hoodies, hats, stickers, heat press brewery logos, drinkware, and seasonal items will be available at the event.
There is public parking available. Is public transit an option for you? Check and see if there’s an accessible route nearby.
Please drink responsibly. We always encourage carpooling and safe, designated drivers.
Keep an eye out - we will send you all final event details via email the week of this event and share anything else you might need to know.
