The Native Plant Master® (NPM) Program is an award winning, non‐credit, educational program offered by various county Extension offices through Colorado State University Extension.
Native Plant Master Course Themes
Each Native Plant Master (NPM) course is made up of three sessions held three successive weeks.
Sessions will cover -
Botanical characteristics
of
plant families
and species, identification using a botanical key, scientific names, and stewardship of native plants
Ecological relationships
including non-native species, noxious weeds, and relationships with wildlife, pollinators, other plants, etc.
Human uses
, including use of natives for sustainable landscaping, ethnobotanical and other human uses.
Course Content:
We will introduce you to 40-50 plants, using family features and a botanical key to help identify species. Ecological relationships, human connections and the potential to use some of these plants in your landscaping will be discussed. In addition, we will emphasize understanding noxious alien plants and the challenge they present to our native environment.
Prerequisite
: A basic botany class is suggested for those who would like to refresh their botanical knowledge and is highly recommended for those who have minimal background. Registrants will have access to a recorded botany class.
Native Plant Master:
Participants must attend all three classes for course completion. Participants who pass three NPM courses will receive a Native Plant Master Certificate. This 12 hour class fulfills 1/3 of the 36-hour coursework requirement towards certification as a Native Plant Master. Courses should be taken in different months and/or vegetation zones.

by Jennifer Ackerfield 2nd edition (2022 or 2024) is required for this class. Mesa County Extension office has copies of the book for sale. The book is also available through the Colorado Native Plant Society bookstore (https://conps.org/conps-store), local and online retail outlets, and the publisher (800-621-2736). Please be sure to buy the newest edition.

This field-based class will take you through lush meadows and forested slopes, where you'll explore a diverse range of wildflower habitats, honing identification skills and building confidence in your ability to identify plants. From delicate columbines to striking paintbrushes, you'll uncover the captivating stories behind each flower and gain a deeper appreciation for the park's rich botanical diversity.
Who:
Participants ages 16 and up.
Program level
: Moderate – These programs are most appropriate for those with some hiking experience. Expect to travel 1 to 2 miles over the course of the program and to be on your feet for several hours at a time. Participants should be comfortable navigating both maintained trails and unmaintained meadows or grassy areas. Prior experience hiking or walking above 8,000 feet is recommended.
This program is entirely field based.
When:
Friday, June 27, 2025 from 9:00am to 3:00pm
Where:
Meet at the Fall River Visitor Center, 3450 Fall River Road, Estes Park, CO 80517, and travel together to various locations within RMNP in Conservancy vehicles. All required fees and permits for park entry are included in your registration.

About Your Instructor
: Leanne Benton is a former ranger-naturalist in Rocky Mountain National Park who has led wildflower and tundra ecology walks in the park for 25 years and has studied and photographed the park’s wildflowers for more than 30 years.

Our programs proceed rain or shine, and participants should be prepared for inclement weather. However, should we decide to cancel a program due to unsafe weather or emergency conditions, we will notify participants by email and automatically issue full refunds.

Well if I plunk down $60, what should I Expect?
A lot!! Around 50 people coming to the Atlas Theater for three 2.5 hour sessions Friday night and all day Saturday where we talk through all the freshest material we know on the Enneagram. We will have break outs, lots of time to discuss with others, fantastic coffees, beers, and non alcoholic cocktails available, and opportunities to have meals with some of the most informed people on the planet when it comes to Enneagram.
So I'm not from Colorado, Where do I stay?
Greeley and Windsor, Colorado all have wonderful AirBnbs available that are less that 15 minutes away, and there are countless local hotels and bed and breakfasts.
Do I need to know anything about the Enneagram?
If you are pretty sure you know your type, you'll be great! If you don't, go to the "Start Here Podcast" (the one with the Enneagram symbol), find out, and show up!
I'm in. What should I bring?
Bring a friend or two. Bring some cash for lunch and drinks. Bring your excitement and a pen, and everything else will be provided.
Do I get face time with the Tj Wilson?
Friday night, we will hang out afterward for an hour or two, talk shop about you, your journey and all the things.
