We On Point: A Celebration of Black Design Excellence
June 19–20, 2025 | Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD)
We On Point.
Because design shapes culture. Because community fuels progress. Because our creativity deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated.
We on point. Always have been. Always will be.
On Juneteenth, we gather. Not just to remember—but also to imagine what’s next.
Not to protest—but to hold space. Not for show—but for each other.
We arrive in Minneapolis, the place that inspired our journey, to continue a conversation that’s more necessary than ever.

ABOUT THE STATE OF BLACK DESIGN
Founded in 2020, The State of Black Design was created in response to a world that demanded our attention and our action. It was born out of a need to create space—real, intentional space—for Black designers and those who support them.
We started with a goal to:
Explore the intersection of race and design practice
Introduce aspiring creatives to accomplished Black designers
Provide professional development and networking opportunities
Hold space for honest conversations about the challenges and possibilities in our field
The need remains in 2025. Many of the initiatives promised just a few years ago are being scaled back or abandoned, but our commitment has not changed.
This year, we return to where it started—not just to reflect, but to act with care, clarity, and purpose. We’re hosting this event on Juneteenth to honor both the roots and the future of Black design.
Transparency in Times of Transition
As a community-centered organization committed to truth and transparency, the State of Black Design (SoBD) recognizes the complexities involved in partnerships formed during Fall 2024, particularly amid evolving corporate commitments to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Following the murder of George Floyd, many corporations publicly pledged significant support toward racial equity and investments in historically marginalized communities. While some have described recent corporate actions as DEI rollbacks and others as rebranding, our mission remains unwavering.
The sponsorship agreements for this year's events were established before these corporate shifts,
and our partners have been unwavering in their support of SoBD
. The provided funds have been dedicated precisely as intended: expanding access, increasing visibility, and generating tangible opportunities for Black designers, students, and creatives. Our annual conference, career fair, and scholarship programs remain essential avenues for our community. Without these partnerships, our ability to facilitate critical pathways into industry and academia would be notably diminished.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to equipping our community with necessary resources, navigating each partnership with clarity, accountability, and a continued dedication to our core values.

Philosophy Camp 2025: Do We Know with Our Heads or Hearts? | Anselm House - Melrose Station
Jun 23, 2025 (UTC-5)
Minneapolis
Do We Know with Our Heads or Hearts?
What does it mean to know the truth? Is knowledge a purely rational process, or can we also rely on our senses for information? Can you know things in your soul without knowing them in your mind? How do you know that what you perceive is real? In our current post-truth cultural moment, such questions have never been more relevant. Join us this summer, as we examine this age-old human endeavor of pursuing knowledge. Drawing from historic thinkers such as Descartes, Aquinas, and Montaigne, as well as modern philosophers such as Michael Olanyi, Hubert Dreyfus, and Simone Weil, we will explore various philosophical frameworks of knowledge. We will use this content to examine what it means to pursue an active and holistic understanding of God, ourselves, and the world.
This five-day course is led by Ellie Peters. Class time will be supplemented by guest speakers, field trips around the UMN campus, and activities to help bring the ideas we are considering to life. Lunch and snacks provided.
About Ellie Peters
Ellie Peters works at Anselm House as an executive assistant and operations manager and teaches in the student Fellows Program on the side. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Davidson College. Before coming to Anselm House, she spent her career teaching high school-level humanities in a Christian Classical school. She is passionate about exploring the big human questions alongside students and seeing their minds and hearts wake up to God’s world and their place within it in the process.
