Children's Free Learn to Ride a Bike sessions at Forge Valley School in Sheffield are the perfect opportunity for children aged 5 years and above to learn how to ride their bike without stabilisers. These fun and relaxed lessons are specifically designed for children who cannot ride at all or are still wobbly when riding without support. Led by experienced and fully qualified National Standards cycling instructors, these small group sessions ensure that each child receives maximum benefit.
Please note that due to funding constraints, these sessions are only available for Sheffield residents. When booking, please provide a Sheffield postcode. Although parents are welcome to attend, it has been found that children tend to make better progress when parents do not stay. All necessary equipment, including helmets, balance bikes, and spare bikes, will be provided.
The sessions will be held at Forge Valley School and will last for 1 hour. To ensure a smooth experience, participants will receive an information email a few days before the event with all the necessary details. For any questions, please contact Steve Fox at steve.fox@cyclenorth.co.uk.
Previous participants have expressed their gratitude for the learn to ride sessions. One parent shared their joy as their child returned from the lesson full of confidence and spent the entire weekend cycling in the park. This workshop is designed to follow on from Part 1. If you haven’t yet done Part 1, check the Writers Workshop event schedule to sign up. In the first of these workshops, we used the tarot as a means of idea generation, looking at character creation and personality traits, setting, and inciting incidents. Part 2 will build on this by using the tarot to determine plot events, twists and turns, and interactions between the protagonist and other characters you’ll introduce to your story. The chance element of the cards will assist with story planning, and also bring spontaneity that will open up new creative avenues of thought and action. As well as the practical tarot element there will be timed writing exercises, and also plenty of time for discussion and questions. The workshop is suitable for beginner and intermediate writers also interested in tarot, whether you're looking for ways to start enhancing your writing using the cards, or you're interested in deepening an existing relationship. If you have a tarot deck of your own, feel free to bring it, but don't worry if not as I will bring a few decks along on the day. I find the variations in style and art work on the cards to be helpful inspiration, and I want you to experience this too! Prerequisite: to have attended Tarot & the Writing Path part 1. Please bring your notes from the first session as we’ll be using these to start off the timed writing exercises. About the tutor: Jools Warner is a novelist and tarot reader based in Sheffield. As a novelist, she writes fantasy fiction and paranormal romance for adults, and spooky stuff for younger readers. She did an MA in Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University, graduating in 2022 with Distinction. Her debut novel Ernie and the Mage-Killer was published in 2024 with Bellows Press, and her second novel, Shadow on Darkling Edge, will be published in 2026 with Sul Books. The Scottish Colourists, featuring Samuel John Peploe, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, G.L. Hunter, and John Duncan Fergusson, revolutionized the Scottish art scene. Drawing inspiration from the avant-garde French Fauvist movement, their vibrant and innovative use of color breathed new life into the artistic landscape. Although not a tightly bound collective, these artists exhibited their work together on three occasions during their lifetimes. In 1950, art historian T.J. Honeyman immortalized their legacy in his seminal book, Three Scottish Colourists, establishing them as a recognized artistic force. By the 1980s, the Scottish Colourists expanded their reach to include Fergusson.

Join the Risograph Workshop (Monochrome) in Sheffield City Centre at the Carousel Print Studio, Exchange Place Studios on November 25, 2023. This one-day workshop offers an opportunity to explore the fascinating process of risograph printmaking. These printing machines, which were once hidden away in mundane offices during the Thatcher era, are now being brought to life and given a new purpose. With your participation, we will unleash the full potential of these machines and create monochrome artworks that transform the ordinary office printer into something extraordinary.
Risograph prints are favored by artists and graphic designers for their unique visual quality. They allow for the creation of rapid multiple copies and can incorporate various elements such as text, drawings, and black and white photography. During the workshop, all materials and equipment will be provided, but you are welcome to bring reference materials such as newspaper or magazine cuttings or photographs.
Led by experienced graphic designers Emily Appleton and Laura Brannagan, this workshop is designed for both beginners and those familiar with risograph printing. Emily and Laura have extensive knowledge and passion for all things riso and have utilized this technique in their own practices, creating zines, prints, and stationery.
Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy, and bring a packed lunch if desired. Complimentary teas, coffee, water, and biscuits will be provided. The Carousel Print Studio, located at Exchange Place Studios, is a nonprofit charity dedicated to offering educational workshops in printmaking and supporting creatives in Sheffield. The studio is accessible and equipped with everything you need for a productive workshop experience.
