Handpan Classes with Sasha Frolov | Red Doors Studio

HK$1650 class excluding handpan (bring your own preferably D minor scale)
Handpans first hit the streets in 2007 and have rapidly grown in popularity worldwide. Their appeal lies in their ability to blend the sounds of a steel drum with more varied tonal texture and rhythm plus they are easy to carry. Making them a firm favourite of buskers, sound practitioners and musicians. Allow your creativity to flourish as you develop rhythms and learn basic techniques with Sasha. Class is suitable for all ages from rank novices never having touched a handpan to beginners. More advanced training available on request. About Sasha He is a percussionist specialising in handpan. He fell in love with percussive instruments around 15 years ago. African drum Djembe became his first passion. However, over time, he noticed that when he played percussive instruments, he was missing the melody... which is why when he first saw the Handpan, he immediately fell in love with it. He knew this wonderful instrument is exactly what he needed. Handpan is a new age instrument that combines rhythm, melody and harmony at the same time. The emotional and soft sound of this instrument fills the space and creates a harmonious atmosphere, which relaxes people. Playing it requires a creative mind. In my classes, I emphasise feeling on top of music theory. I adapt rigorous percussion technique for playing the handpan, which will be very useful in setting a base of creating any sound you want on this instrument. Sasha has lived in Hong Kong for 5 years. Handpan are his main instrument but he also is proficient in the Indian flute bansuri, didgeridoo and any kind of percussion. He has performed at Open space Jazz fest and with bands including CheeseTata and band Tarboosh. Music is how your feelings sound like!!! MTWM presents: Riot in School Live in Hong Kong | The Aftermath
May 11, 2025 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
MTWM Presents: Riot in School Live in Hong Kong Chengdu rock band Riot in School 返校日 brings their 2nd album Punk Rock Blasphemy (//褻瀆朋克搖滾) to Hong Kong, alongside their hard-hitting and infectious live energy. Details: Date | 2025 May 11 (Sun)
Time | Doors 20:00
Venue | The Aftermath, LG/F, 52-54 Wyndham Street
Tickets | $120 (soli), $250 (adv) via Eventbrite
Special Guests | Bad Actors (HK), TBC Organised by @milkteawithoutmilk (A limited number of solidarity tickets are available for the unwaged, unhoused, unemployed, students, or those who need it.) === Did You Get Everything You Wanted From Your Youth? For Riot in School, it never seemed enough. This is a band living in perpetual anxiety, never satisfied, and full of regrets—but also full of relentless drive. In the summer of 2022, after the bittersweet release of their first album “Ceremony for Corruption”, Riot in School hit the road for their debut national tour. Thirteen shows in unfamiliar cities brought fleeting euphoria, but the joy dissolved as quickly as it came. They returned to routine, haunted by wasted time and craving something more: a bigger audience, a deeper connection, and a stronger voice in this cultural landscape. Amidst post-lockdown turmoil, they expanded from a trio to a quartet and poured two and a half years into creating their second album. It was a grueling process of self-discovery, internal conflict, and artistic obsession. The band gambled everything— their youth, money, and sanity—to craft something sharper, heavier, and more aggressive. Riot in School, as self-proclaimed leaders of China’s new wave of bands, are making the boldest move in their history: a Southeast Asian tour with an expanded five-piece lineup, guest bands from the region’s alternative scene, and their hardest-hitting setlist yet. This is our moment. Will you be there with me? For their Hong Kong stop, the band is joined by local alt-rock trio Bad Actors. === More About Riot in School’s Second Album: 《//褻瀆朋克搖滾》 《//褻瀆朋克搖滾》, translated to “//Punk Rock Blasphemy”, is Riot in School’s sophomore effort, blending the energy of post-hardcore with the melodicism of alternative rock, infused with hip-hop, trip-pop, and experimental electronics to create a sound uniquely their own. Two and a half years in the making, the album emerged from intense conflicts and artistic anxiety; all of the albums’ 11-tracks were self-financed and painstakingly recorded, reflecting the band’s unwavering commitment to leaving no regrets. Mixed by legendary producer Will Yip (known for his work with Title Fight, Turnstile, and more), the album is intricately crafted, divided into three dynamic sections filled with bold experimentation. The album cover and liner notes highlight left-behind children from Sichuan, for whom the band organised a benefit tour back in February of 2025.
