Site Visit: Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit | L12 2AP
May 23, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Liverpool
Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure Ltd have been contracted to construct the new facility on the live Children’s Health Campus and will host the site visit. There will be a presentation describing the challenging constraints, enabling works, services diversions and engineering solutions used on this challenging project, followed by a site tour.
* Places are limited so don't leave it too late to book
*
Project Details:
Alder Hey Childrens NHS Foundation Trust have commissioned a new state-of-the-art Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on their Children’s Health Campus in Liverpool. The unit will address a shared concern between Liverpool Women’s and Alder Hey hospitals, that babies who need specialist surgery currently have to be transferred to Alder Hey to get the specialist surgical care they need, then transferred back to Liverpool Women’s Hospital to continue their specialist neonatal care. Specialist neonatal staff from Liverpool Women’s Hospital will work alongside Alder Hey at the new NICU ensuring that babies do not need to be transferred back and forth between the two hospitals. The new arrangement will reduce the number of unnecessary and sometimes risky transfers of babies between Alder Hey and other hospitals, significantly improving the experience of patients and families.
The new building is situated on the location of the existing Emergency Department car park and will be linked to the existing hospital via link corridors. Works commenced on site with a series of enabling works, including service diversions, reconfiguring of the bereavement garden and temporary re-routing of vehicular and pedestrian access routes. The enabling works were complete earlier this year releasing the site for construction works to begin. The steel frame with composite deck structure sits on the piled substructure with reinforced concrete foundations and will be linked to the concrete frame of the existing hospital building. On the ground floor of the new building, will be a new Emergency Decisions Unit (EDU), Paediatric Admission Unit (PAU) and Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC). The new unit, on the 1st floor of the new building, will feature 18 individual family rooms for parents to call home and be alongside their new-borns whilst being cared for. The new facility will be clad in a mixture of masonry, aluminium cladding and render materials, including projecting feature windows.
Speaker:
Shaun Thomas, Senior Project Manager, Morgan Sindall Construction
Shaun is Morgan Sindall’s construction lead for the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital NICU project, with overall responsibility for its success. Acting as the primary point of contact for the client, he leads the delivery team, ensuring operations are safe and the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. From Spellow to Southport...with Love | The Isla Gladstone Conservatory
May 28, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Anfield
‘From Spellow to Southport…with Love’ is a day for all families, young people and children, featuring three of the UK’s best, and best-loved poets, lyricists and performers, Michael Rosen, Jackie Kay and Jordan Stephens, full of fun, creative activities to promote and celebrate the power of community, unity, diversity and resilience. The tragic murders of the young girls in Southport, and the racist riots that followed, which led to Spellow Library suffering major fire damage, sent shockwaves through communities across the region. Beloved children’s poet Michael Rosen, the inimitable Jackie Kay, and Rizzles Kicks' Jordan Stephens for a one-off, unforgettable day of performances, storytelling, and poetry in the iconic Isla Gladstone Conservatory in Stanley Park. There will be creative activities for all ages, an opportunity for you to write your own messages of love and unity on postcards, and to connect and share your experiences with people in your community. Writing on the Wall, Michael Rosen, Jackie Kay and Jordan Stephens believe in the power of creativity to both inspire and unite. You too can play your part, hear some amazing performances, and have a lot of fun on the day too. The library maybe repaired but the community still requires help to heal. In the face of difficult times, this is a space to celebrate and embrace the diversity that makes our communities strong. Let’s come together and send love from Spellow to Southport.
Michael Rosen
is one of Britain’s best-loved children’s poets and authors. Born in 1946, he grew up in a family passionate about education, storytelling, and humour, all of which have shaped his career. With a deep love for language, he has written numerous poetry collections, picture books, and educational works, including the classic We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Beyond writing, Michael is a dynamic performer, bringing his poetry to life in schools, libraries, and festivals. He has also worked in broadcasting, notably presenting BBC Radio 4’s Word of Mouth, exploring language and communication. As Professor of Children’s Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London, he continues to inspire educators and young readers alike. With his trademark wit and warmth, Michael Rosen remains a champion of creativity, literacy, and the joy of words.
Jordan Stephens
is a writer, performer, and mental health advocate, best known as one half of the chart-topping duo Rizzle Kicks, who sold over a million records. Beyond music, Jordan has made a significant impact in raising awareness around mental health, drawing from his own experiences to challenge stigma. His campaign #IAMWHOLE reached over 120 million people online and was even mentioned in the Houses of Parliament. As a children’s author, Jordan brings his creativity and passion for storytelling to young readers. His book The Missing Piece was recently shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Prize. Whether through music, writing, or advocacy, Jordan Stephens continues to inspire with his commitment to self-expression, inclusivity, and mental well-being.
Jackie Kay
is a celebrated poet, playwright, and novelist whose work explores themes of identity, belonging, and imagination. Known for her ability to shift between voices, she brings a dynamic, rhythmic quality to her writing, often infused with her Glasgow accent. Born in Scotland to a Scottish mother and a Nigerian father, Jackie was adopted by white parents and grew up in Glasgow in a family deeply involved in politics and social justice. She began writing poetry at the age of 12, focusing on issues she saw in the world. Her love for drama and performance shaped her approach to poetry, drawing inspiration from Burns Night recitations and spoken-word events in Glasgow. She discovered that poetry could be written in everyday language and performed in an engaging, dramatic way. Beyond poetry, Jackie Kay is an accomplished writer of plays, novels, and short stories, further showcasing her talent for storytelling across different forms.
