All tickets include a copy of his autobiography available to pick up on the night. For the first 100 ticket buyers, you will receive a GOLDEN TICKET which entitles you to reserved seating in the front rows and a meet-and-greet opportunity with Duncan before the event. Golden ticket holders will be contacted separately regarding timings and information, nearer the event . All other seating is unreserved Tickets : £34.00 including a copy of Big Dunc (£22 RRP). Part of the event will open up to pre-submitted audience questions, and we’d love to hear your question for Big Dunc in advance. Please email jane@linghams.co.uk or hello@bookabookshop.com with your question. We cannot promise he will answer them all but we will do our best. Questions will be collated by 28th April. The book They don't make footballers - and football autobiographies - like this anymore. The brutally honest, riotously entertaining story of the much-loved Everton legend and iconic Premier League bad boy. Praised by Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson as one of the greatest and most passionate players to ever play the game, Duncan Ferguson, or Big Dunc as he is known, is larger than life in every sense. Measuring a towering 6 feet 4 inches in height, from the moment the striker emerged in British football in the 1990s, he was front and back page news. On the pitch, fans loved Duncan for his roguish charm, his thrilling goals and his total commitment in every game. Fighting tooth and nail, he was a born leader and took no prisoners. Like his rival Roy Keane, he played close to the limit, and often crossed it. Such as the time he was sentenced to 3 months in Glasgow’s toughest prison for headbutting an opponent – the first and only time a footballer has ever gone to jail for a crime committed on a football pitch. In BIG DUNC: The Upfront Autobiography, Duncan reveals, for the first time, the full story: the truth about his experiences in prison, his partying with African princes and Liverpool gangsters, his fighting with burglars, his making and losing a fortune, and how he turned his life around through his beloved Everton F.C.. In the process, the book sheds light on one of football’s most charismatic but notorious and enigmatic hardmen. Duncan is now a coach and manager at Inverness Caledonian Thistle F.C.. He is a pillar of the community in Merseyside, giving back to stricken children who share a similar tough upbringing to his own. Duncan's book takes readers on a rollercoaster ride of humour, drama and redemption. Buckle up.

Nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe: dilemmas and controversies | University of Liverpool
May 13, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Liverpool
Speaker Information
Erika Harris
specializes in studies of nations and nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe, post- Soviet space and the Balkans. Within this general area, her research increasingly focuses on the significance of borders - physical and symbolic - for understanding of nationalism, shaping of national identities, state policies and state behaviour, and the impact on the lives of those who live along or across these dividing lines ( see the forthcoming The Dilemma of Nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe, Bristol University Press, 2025). She has published:
Nationalism Theories and Cases
, Edinburgh University Press, 2009;
Democracy in New Europe
(with Christopher Lord), Palgrave Macmillan, 2006;
Nationalism and Democratisation Politics of Slovakia and Slovenia,
Routledge,2018. She has published articles in journals such as Europe-Asia Studies, East European Politics, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics and others, as well as several commentaries on political developments for media.
Lecture overview
Nationalism which proposes certain fixity between nation and the state is not unique to Central and Eastern Europe ( CEE); it is a universal ideology underpinning contemporary nation-states across Europe. There are however some differences between eastern and western part of the European continent which derive from very different historical and political development of Eastern Europe. The focus will be on one specificity of CEE – frequent changes of regimes and borders, dramatic national and personal experiences and insecurities of states and their populations, conflicts and wars ( including the war in Ukraine) – all hugely impactful on nationalism and its many manifestations, politics and the interpretation of historical memory. The aim of the lecture is threefold: i) to argue that we should not be that surprised at nationalism’s ability to create and destroy states and destabilise whole regions generally, but specifically in CEE; ii) critically assess the assumptions of international politics and theories of nationalism so that geopolitical surprises are less surprising, and ultimately, iii) now, when the gap between two parts of Europe is narrowing, to understand dilemmas and controversies facing CEE better, lest there may be lessons there to learned for western countries.
