Claudia Pagès Rabal | Chisenhale Gallery

Feb 28–May 11, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
London
Exhibitions
Claudia Pagès Rabal’s practice intertwines words, bodies, music, and movement. Five Defence Towers marks Pagès’ first institutional solo exhibition in London and the premiere of a major new moving image commission. Continuing her exploration along the Silk Road, Pagès’ new commission locates five defence towers built throughout Catalonia’s former borderlands. During the 9th and 10th centuries, European forces established a military buffer zone called the Hispanic March. This delineated the border between their own territories and Al-Andalus – the Arabic name for the Muslim-ruled area of the Iberian Peninsula from 711–1492. These historic frontiers of legal, economic, political, and cultural power struggle are the starting point for Pagès’ new moving image work, which spans scripted dialogue, choreographed dance, light, and sound.

Since our first production, Feast During the Plague in 1995, there has been an ongoing interest in the medical gaze, and the body. This session will feature performance extracts from selected productions, material from the archive, and discussion with Director Suzy Willson and researchers Alex Mermikides and Gianna Bouchard, exploring the interface between medicine and performance. This event will appeal to anyone with an interest in health and medicine in performance, including performance makers, medics, researchers, academics. Choreozone Choreozone is a multi-year project focusing on the gathering, organising and sharing of materials in our archive. ‘Glisk’ is a new collection of paintings which have travelled to us from the wild, remote landscape of Shetland, the northernmost tip of Scotland. Please join us for a drink at the launch party on Friday 28th February 6-9pm. You don’t want to miss these delicate, abstracted watercolour works. A highly experimental artist, Peter Davis RSW harnesses the translucent, free-flowing properties of watercolour to evoke a dreamlike, gauzy sense of light and place. The result is a series of paintings which harness the wild beauty of the Scottish landscape in the form of pooling, bleeding watercolour and gossamer-like passages of faint, misty mark-making. We hope to see you at the launch party! Information Source: Glasshouse Contemporary | eventbrite
