Workshop with visual artist Katarzyna Perlak | Temple Bar Gallery + Studios
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dublin
Work with exhibiting artist Katarzyna Perlak to learn embroidery stitches and make a handkerchief like one from the artist's Bated Breath series, an ongoing series that form a stitched archive, using politcal moments or a proverbs that have personal significance. The handkerchief holds many symbolic meanings relating to both personal and communal codes. Often seen as a tool for containing bodily fluids and emotion, it has also been used through history as a method of communication, ritualistically in traditional folk dances, and as a code for sexual preference in the LGBTQ+ community. Participants can bring a handkerchief that belongs to them or a handkerchief can be provided. This is an adult workshop, no experience necessary. This workshop is for a small group and so confirmation of attendance will be required one week before the workshop. Bated Breaths (2020–ongoing) is a series of embroidered handkerchiefs with twenty five completed works and new ones in making. Each work presents a different proverb, saying or a quote citing a family, friend, lover, or a stranger. This series archives current and historical moments and is considering how the formation of these phrases reveal intersections of personal histories, collective memory and cultural etiquette. Better a bare foot than none presents Katarzyna Perlak’s tender crafts series, exploring how heritage and traditional handwork practices can be re-imagined from contemporary feminist, queer and migrant perspectives. Considering the contradictions within problematic social movements in Poland, as well as her own longing for home, Perlak utilises the feeling of nostalgia to imagine new possibilities for the future. Katarzyna Perlak’s exhibitions include Liverpool Biennial (2025); V&A Museum, London (2024); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2023); B3 Biennial of Moving Image, Frankfurt (2023); Brent Biennial, London (2022); Jerwood Arts, London (2021); Detroit Art Week (2019); BALTIC, Gateshead (2017); Diaspora Pavilion, 57th Venice Biennale (2017) Event location information: Studio 6 will be dimly lit for the presentations with theatre style seating. It is located on the first floor and is accessible by lift. There is a semi-accessible toilet on the ground floor. Please note there is currently construction outside our gallery. Nomads on Screen: Psychoanalysing the 21st Century Subject Beyond Borders | DCU All Hallows Campus
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dublin
On three Saturday afternoons – 12th April, 24th May, and 14th June – the IPFF and DCU Centre for Possibility Studies will host a special series of films, 'WItches', 'Nomadland' and 'In the Real', respectively, examining the theme of the subjectivity of the contemporary nomad through the lens of psychoanalysis. Each screening will be presented by a scholar/psychoanalyst/filmmaker, followed by a Q&A and discussion. All welcome. Presenters/scholars will include Professor Valerie Heffernan (Maynooth University), psychotherapist and scholar Dr Angie Voela and psychotherapist(UEL), scholar and film-maker Conor McCormack (CFAR, Bristol) From the Greek nemo (pasture) the term ‘nomad’ originally described pastoral people as well as groups without permanent abode. As such nomadic groups have been defined in relation to absolute or irregular mobility. The Nomad in the philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s thought is a symbol of freedom, fluidity, and non-conformity to rigid structures or territories. Rather than being defined by stable identities or fixed points (as “sedentary” people or societies often are), the nomad represents movement, multiplicity, and ‘becoming’. In our time, large groups of people still have to move themselves to flee war, famine, and torture; what we think of as the migrant diaspora of the discontents of our so-called civilisations. At the level of the singular we see and hear the accounts of those who are deemed to ‘belong’ outside/outwith the social order, what Lacan called the Symbolic. Thus evicted from the Symbolic order, the residue of their eviction leaves a trace in the Imaginary and in the Real.

Safeguarding 3 Online Workshop | Online workshop through Zoom
Apr 16, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dun Laoghaire
Safeguarding 3 - Designated Liaison Person(DLP) A person appointed to the Designated Liaison Person (DLP) position in a club must have completed the Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness Course (Safeguarding 1 Workshop) and should complete the NEW Designated Liaison Person 3 hour workshop. A club may appoint the same person to both the CCO and DLP positions however best practice advises that they are kept as separate roles. The third part of the ISC Child Welfare & Protection Training Programme is the Designated Liaison Person workshop. Every club/organisation should designate a person to be responsible for dealing with any concerns about the protection of children. The Designated Liaison Person is responsible for reporting allegations or suspicions of child abuse to TULSA Child and Family Agency or Social Services (NI) and/or An Garda Siochán / PSNI. It is recommended that this person is a senior club person. However, if there is difficulty identifying a separate individual to take this role, the Club Children's Officer can be appointed as Designated Liaison Person once the club/organisation is clear about the responsibilities of each role. The organisation's child protection policy and procedures should include the name and contact details of the Designated Liaison Person and the responsibilities attached to the role. The Sport Ireland Code has been adopted and implemented by governing bodies of sports, clubs, local sports partnerships and community/voluntary groups on an ongoing basis since 2000. It has been encouraging to see the common sense approach to the adoption of the code at grass roots level, which has resulted in protection for young people and leaders. VENUE INFORMATION This is an online workshop that will take place over zoom. The zoom link and course material will be emailed to registered participants a couple of days before the course takes place. The zoom details are not to be shared with others and only those registered will be admitted to the course. GDPR By registering for this workshop your name, email and D.O.B will be shared with Sport Ireland. This information is required to produce your certificate of completion.

Sarah Grimes, drum kit
Cora Venus Lunny, violin SHHh...Ow...emmM is a month-long multifaceted project by visual artist Jaki Irvine, that will involve video development, music performances and installations, and which will culminate in an installation and collaborative performance at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, later this year. In this partially devised improvised audio-visual music performance Jaki projects and manipulates her video works in realtime to create a live score for the musicians. This unique experimental work weaves real-life video, digital animation, and live music improvisation into an evolving, interactive score. Inspired by the classic tune “Show Me the Way to Go Home” (iconically remembered from Jaws), this collaborative improvisation between visuals and sound offers an unforgettable immersive experience. Jaki Irvine is a renowned Irish artist celebrated for her innovative and interdisciplinary practice, which spans video, sound, writing, and installation. A current studio artist at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Irvine is known for her ability to weave intricate narratives that explore themes of memory, history, language, and human relationships. Her work often combines the personal with the political, creating immersive, multi-sensory experiences that challenge and engage audiences. Whether in single-screen format or in more complex installations, Irvine creates open-ended narratives in which image and musical score overlap, coalesce and diverge. Moving between overt musicality and the edges where a sound begins or ends, Irvine focuses on the rigours and pleasures of editing, of playing an instrument, bringing together the private space of practice with the possibilities of performance it anticipates. Over the years, she has exhibited widely, earning recognition for her distinctive visual style and thought-provoking conceptual frameworks. SHHh...Ow...emmM is produced in partnership with Temple Bar Gallery + Studios.

Panel Discussion: Better a bare foot than none | Studio 6, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios
Apr 26, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dublin
This in-conversation panel discussion with Katarzyna Perlak, Aleksandra Gajowy and Marta Czyż will explore and unpack the recurring themes in Perlak’s practice, focussing in particular on the artist’s tender crafts series. Refreshments provided Katarzyna Perlak’s tender crafts series, presented in her Gallery exhibition Better a bare foot than none, explores how heritage and traditional handwork practices can be re-imagined from contemporary feminist, queer and migrant perspectives. Perlak’s Pajaki sculptures are a material manifestation of Polish tradition. The paper chandeliers, also known as 'spiders', are hung to protect the home, and are historically crafted for Christian, pagan and folk celebrations. Considering the contradictions within problematic social movements in Poland, as well as her own longing for home, Perlak utilises the feeling of nostalgia to imagine new possibilities for the future. Katarzyna Perlak’s exhibitions include Liverpool Biennial (2025); V&A Museum, London (2024); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2023); B3 Biennial of Moving Image, Frankfurt (2023); Brent Biennial, London (2022); Jerwood Arts, London (2021); Detroit Art Week (2019); BALTIC, Gateshead (2017); Diaspora Pavilion, 57th Venice Biennale (2017) Marta Czyż is an art historian, independent curator and critic, living and working in Warsaw, Poland. Curator of the Polish Pavilion on the 60th International Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia, her practice draws on archives and recent developments in art history to influence culture and social movements. Recent curatorial projects include: CCA Ujazdowski Castle and Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, BWA Zielona Góra; MOS Gorzów; and the National Museum in Szczecin. In 2020, she curated Contexts Festival of Ephemeral Arts, Sokołowsko and Youth Triennale at the Centre for Polish Sculpture, Orońsko. Aleksandra Gajowy (she/her) is Assistant Professor in Modern and Contemporary Art in the School of Art History and Cultural Policy at University College Dublin, and Associate Director of the UCD Centre for Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies. She holds a PhD from Newcastle University (UK), which focused on body and queerness in Polish art since the 1970s. Her ongoing research focuses on queerness and lesbianism in Polish visual cultures since the nineteenth century, Central and Eastern European lesbian studies, and queer Jewishness in Poland. Her monograph on modern and contemporary lesbian art from Poland is under contract with Manchester University Press.
