GLOAM presents: In Conversation with Abi Charlesworth and Victoria Lucas | Bloc Projects Ltd
Apr 25, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Sheffield
GLOAM presents: In Conversation with Abi Charlesworth and Victoria Lucas Come join us for an intimate evening hosted at Bloc Projects Ltd as we delve into conversation with artists Abi Charlesworth and Victoria Lucas. This event will be a unique opportunity to gain insight into their artistic processes, lines of research, and discussion around the current two-part solo exhibition by Abi Charlesworth 'to rest amongst the blades' at GLOAM. Book now to reserve a seat! Artists
Abi Charlesworth’s work surrounds the ideas of object debris and mutation. In transforming the object through materials she alters the functionality and displaces the object into a new landscape. As fictionalised objects, they reference the original form before deteriorating and shedding the old objects skin. Anew and functionless they roam between reality and fiction searching for shelter. Charlesworth’s sculptural language is deeply rooted in peripheral object encounters where she is drawn to out of place and partial objects. As a dialogue between herself and the object she converses with the form, material and scale to unfold the objects narrative. Her more recent work explores the boundaries of traces, archaeology and resonance. In researching these subjects she is interested in the tension that can be held between objects and landscape. https://www.abicharlesworth.co.uk/
Victoria Lucas’s artwork “deals with how nature is constructed, and how the concept of nature in turn constructs our political and social imaginary, with a particular focus on how gender is produced, reinforced and can be undermined through the self-representation of women within the landscape” (Velvick, 2023). Her recent practice is predominantly contextualised by the landscapes of Northern England. In the craggy rock of post industry and at the conceptual edges of human-centred culture, the skins of ontological categorisation are permeated through a subversive process of material reckoning. Technology becomes a co-conspirator; nature a mentor. Through a process of lingering with nature on sites of human-led disturbance, Victoria visualizes new aggregates that de-centre the human subject as part of a post-humanist entanglement of matter.
https://www.victorialucas.co.uk/ About the exhibition
to rest amongst the blades
A two-part solo exhibition by Abi Charlesworth
In partnership with Haarlem Artspace
Responding to a body of ongoing text, poetically exploring notions of depression via traces in the body through landscape and archaeology. A realisation of a journey emerges out of a crevasse where planes of memories, objects and emotions are passed through.
Sedimentary layers unfold a personal narrative, encoded with fossils and absent figures. Ceramic and cast fragments hold the petrified remains of object encounters. Artificial fossils show a preoccupation with a dystopian future, concerned with a debris ridden landscape where items hold no value. Charlesworth is asking what physical traces will we leave behind and what traces we leave on each other. Abstracted archaeological aids are used to hold excavated sculptures, pulled from her inner depths. Held in place, they are carefully displayed as an open wound in the dissection of grief. The exhibition will evolve between GLOAM and Haarlem Artspace, as the installation draws from a body of research that is constantly changing and responding to the environment it finds itself within. Acting as echoes— similar yet distinct they are formed by the landscape that shapes them. In moments of stillness where the echo can settle and resound. An outlet to a constant pulse within the work. GLOAM’s industrial past will evoke a darker element from research that is reflected in the install. Ambient light casts shadows as the dust settles. The second part at Haarlem Artspace negotiates the work through a lighter lens, emphasising the preoccupation with landscape, sedimentary layers, and fossils. https://gloamgallery.com/ https://haarlemartspace.co.uk/

The Roaring Girl | Crookes Social Club
Apr 29, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Sheffield
The Roaring Girl
By Thomas Dekker and Thomas Middleton
Abridged by Lucy Bytheway
📍 Crookes Social Club, Mulehouse Rd, Sheffield S10 1TD
🗓️ Tuesday 29th April & Thursday 1st May 2025 Sebastian and Mary are stuck. They're lovers, impeded by Sebastian's father Alexander, who forbids their engagement. A plan is hatched to deceive Alexander of his son's devotion to local legend and social reject Moll Cutpurse, in the hopes of proving Mary a preferable alternative. Unbeknownst to them, Alexander hatches his own plan to incriminate Moll and rid his son of her. The whole while, all Moll wants is to be left alone!
Their conundrum is flanked by the quandaries of the busybodying neighborhood: a chemist and his wife's entanglement with a younger man. An alleged affair of a tailor. A respected father's despair over his gambling son - it's nothing short of bedlam! Featuring live original music from an electric trio, this farcical comedy follows the lives of a mischief-making, pot-stirring ccommunity.
The play's heroine is based on real-life rogue Moll Cutpurse, a notorious figure amongst England's 17th century underworld, who fought, stole, drank, and battled traditional expectations of femininity. This adaptation sees Moll dispute double standards against a backdrop of 1970s northern England, fuelled by a punk, non-conformist characterisation.
This spring at Crookes Social Club you're invited to stomp, shout, and whirl, to laugh and revel at The Roaring Girl.
