FORMAFANTASMA OLTRE TERRA | Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

Feb 15–Jul 13, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Amsterdam
Exhibitions
Oltre Terra, Formafantasma’s ongoing project and traveling exhibition, explores the history, ecology, and global dynamics of wool extraction and production. It goes further than the simple definition of wool as material, to look at it within a much broader ecology. Wool is the entry point for delving into the intricate interactions and interdependencies within an ecosystem. By looking at the history of sheep domestication, wool production, and material culture, Oltre Terra unravels the complexities of the cooperative symbiosis between animals, humans, and the environment. The exhibition explores this very intimate, yet complex, bond between humans and animals, emphasizing the impact they have on one another.

Robin Lowe: Detour | Reflex Modern Art Gallery

Mar 1–Apr 20, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Amsterdam
Exhibitions
Robin Lowe has consistently pursued several bodies of work over the course of his vibrant career as an artist, including psychological portraits, equally charged road paintings, representations of mundane objects saturated in nostalgia, and stream of consciousness drawings that crack open a window to madness. He was once described as an enigmatic painter with a smarting honesty both in person and on the canvass. “Well, that’s the way I like it,” he replied, “images come to me as if out of nowhere, and I feel a compulsion to deal with them. It’s the process of bringing the subconscious into some sort of tangible reality.”

Aan het eind van Sit Fast schreef hij: ‘Sing true and fear not for I am true and fear not’. The Jester of the Crown is an immersive performance art experience that explores the themes of identity, authority, and transformation, using music, movement, and ritual. The participants are invited to attend a piano concert that gradually transforms into a movement meditation and with a ritual closure. The Jester of the Crown invites participants to engage in a ceremony that explores the fluidity of identity, the tension between authority and self-awareness. The program of the concert is carefully crafted through symbolism and meditation techniques, presented in an interdisciplinary formula. Drawing on the contrasting characters of R. Schumann's Carnaval op.9 and Carnaval of the Animals by Saint-Saëns, pianist Daria Fedorchenko and ceremony facilitator Hannah Rojer will guide this interactive musical ritual that blurs boundaries between self and other, human and animal, and external and internal authority. An afternoon with Russell Shorto: talk and signing Taking Manhattan | The American Book Center

Apr 4, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Amsterdam

Literary Arts
We are happy to welcome Russell Short back to the ABC to talk about his new book Taking Manhattan. You are invited to join us for questions. Russell will be signing his books afterwards. Russell Shorto is the best-selling author of eight books, including Smalltime, Revolution Song, Amsterdam, and The Island at the Center of the World. He is the director of the New Amsterdam Project at the New York Historical and senior scholar at the New Netherland Institute. Taking Manhattan is the thrilling narrative of how New York came to be, by the author of the beloved classic The Island at the Center of the World In 1664, England decided to invade the Dutch-controlled city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, had dreams of empire and their arch-rivals, the Dutch, were in the way. But Richard Nicolls, who led the English flotilla bent on destruction, changed his strategy once he began parleying with Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch leader on Manhattan. Bristling with vibrant characters, Taking Manhattan reveals the founding of New York to be an invention: the result not of an English military takeover but of clever negotiations that led to a fusion of the multiethnic capitalistic society the Dutch had pioneered to the power of the rising English empire. But the birth of what might be termed the first modern city is also a story of the brutal dispossession of Native Americans and of the roots of American slavery. Taking Manhattan shows how the paradox of New York’s origins†boundless opportunity coupled with subjugation and displacement†reflect America’s promise and failure to this day. Russell Shorto, whose work has been described as “astonishing” (The New York Times) and “revelatory” (New York Magazine), has once again mined newly translated sources to offer a vibrant tale and a fresh and trenchant argument about American beginnings. You wake up: there is another psyop: you join the congregation of Public Universal Television to understand the vast conspiracy underpinning the bewildering international political situation you find yourself in. In PUTV Episode 3: The Letter Agency our host Tibor Dieters has a startling revelation about the nature of reality and real truth behind the Public Universal Television organisation - while attempting to answer written complaints sent in by our existing viewers. For this piece of performance art you will become part of an esoteric church of video-making and sit behind the cameras during the live production of a television show on the spectacular Tempel stage. As Tibor Dieters' conspiratorial mind unwinds into yours, enter the web of machinations of the deep state to understand the real connection between art and politics... or are you actually being duped by a limited hangout meant to distract from a more terrifying secret? Public Universal Television is created and directed by Leslie Lawrence and Sophia Simensky. The performance is presented in English or in Dutch with English subtitles. Doors open at 1900, performance begins at 1930 and lasts approximately 60 minutes. Viewers for this performance must consent to the use of their image as audience member, in exhibition and broadcast and future promotion, for the 'Public Universal Television' project. About Public Universal Television Public Universal Television is a new art performance series by Leslie Lawrence & Sophia Simensky, developing their practice of performing the artistic production of popular media in co-operation with their audience. Residing in the former theosophical temple of Amsterdam, they have created an esoteric society of video makers looking at news ways to make co-operative media. For each performance they co-operate with a different artist, making them the guest host of a new tv show, the filming of which is then staged for the live audience as a piece of performance art. Public Universal Television is supported by the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts) & Mondriaan Fonds image from 'PUTV Episode 2: Let's Get Real with Andrea López Bernal' visit: leslielawrence.nl - sophia-simensky.com About Tibor Dieters Tibor Dieters is an Amsterdam based artist whose work explores alienation, radicalization, and collective myth-making. WORKSHOP - Get Out of Your Head | CREA

Apr 5, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED

Arts
Taught by Richard Jones. Do you often feel nervous before an improv class, show or other kind of performance? Have you ever felt confused, frozen or indecisive on stage or in a scene? Have you found yourself waiting in the wings but held yourself back until the ‘perfect moment’? We’re often told that the solution in all these situations is to get out of your head. But how? As a somatic coach, improviser and musician, Richard discovered that the most powerful way to do this is to move his attention away from his thoughts and towards his body. He learned that by tapping into your sensations and emotional responses you can quieten the overthinking that leaves you feeling frozen or confused on stage. And not only that, you can also: employ more emotional range in your scenesembody more believable and engaging characters (or just become more powerfully you)acquire the confidence to make bolder offers and choicesCome and explore somatic techniques in this unique and powerful workshop. The workshop will be focussed primarily on applying the techniques to improv but they can also be employed in a huge variety of settings in life and work including artistic performances, speeches, meetings and interviews. Over the course of the workshop you will: learn embodied practices you can use straight away to start feeling more confident on stageplay some fun games and scenes to put them into practice; andgain tools and strategies to build your somatic awareness, allowing you to get out of your head and into your body more quickly in the future.Richard Jones is an improviser, musician and somatic coach, based in London, UK. He has trained with UK-based improv schools such as AndAlso (Maydays), Hoopla and Showstopper and regularly performs shows as an improviser and as a pianist in London and beyond. Richard classes himself as an introvert and more recently identifies as neurodiverse (ADHD and autism). He absolutely loves improvising and performing but the way he is wired creates a number of challenges for him. In particular, when he first started performing he felt very self-conscious and in his head a lot of the time and that held him back from showing up fully. Richard realised that in order to follow his passion, he needed to up-skill. So, having coached performers and speakers since 2015, he expanded his skill set to include somatics so he could help both himself and his clients to show up with more confidence and impact. He now uses this discipline 1-2-1 and in groups to help them grow as performers or speakers. Booking online in advance is required. Tickets are non-refundable. Please contact info@easylaughs.nl in case of unforeseen circumstances. For more information see our Terms and Conditions. Opening exhibition Reimagining Okanisi PerspectivesWe are thrilled to invite you to the opening of Reimagining Okanisi Perspectives at OSCAMon Saturday 8 March from 6.00PM. This unique exhibition celebrates the vibrant culture, history, and resilience of the Aucan Maroon community of Diitabiki. Through art, film, and storytelling, it offers a profound exploration of identity, heritage, and cultural connection. At the heart of the exhibition are three stunning textile artworks by renowned artists Iris Kensmil and Marcel Pinas, created in collaboration with the Aucan Maroon community. Using traditional techniques like embroidery, appliqué, dyeing, and linoleum printing, these pieces bridge the past and present, inviting reflection on the enduring power of tradition. The exhibition is further brought to life by Fiiman Pikin, a captivating film by Beryl Pinas and Lennox Schmidt. Through the fictional character Irvin and his poignant dialogue with Mama Sranan (Mother Suriname), the film explores themes of belonging, memory, and cultural roots. Enriched by interviews and imagery from Diitabiki residents, it creates a dynamic conversation between imagination and reality, past and present. Together with traditional pangi´s from the collection of Thomas Polime, photographs and moving images, the artworks form a cohesive and immersive experience, inviting you to reimagine the Okanisi perspective and engage with a story that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. This project is the vision of Wooko Makandie, with generous support from the Mondriaan Fund and Ferrier Fund. ISORA: Live at The Godown Date: Sun Apr 06 2025 Time: 20:00 (Doors open 19.30) Location: The Godown *** ISORA: 'to see the roots from the top'. We use this metaphor in our music for the search of new sounds but always keeping in mind the seed, the essence, the intuition that keeps us connected to the roots. Original compositions inspired by poetry and folklore serve as the starting point: the seed, the root. From there on, through improvisation, there's a search and live experimentation to create different sound atmospheres. The voice, oboe, trumpet, synthesizers and live electronic music are the tools used to build up soundscapes and trigger musical ideas. At the moment, ISORA - consisting of Ainhoa Pérez Echepare (oboe/English horn, voice, guitar) and Álvaro Rey de Viñas (trumpet, synths, live electronics) - are working on the production of their first EP that brings together original compositions inspired by Castilian traditional songs and Lorca's poetry in order to create a musical narrative connected with their roots. The Godown is excited to host this beautiful duo and we look forward to seeing you there! *** Ainhoa Pérez Echepare (1998, Salamanca) is an oboe/english horn player and singer/songwriter. She studied her bachelor in oboe.During her master's degree in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, she started collaborating with the Live Electronics department exploring the use of the oboe, english horn and voice combined with reverbs, delays and synthesizers. As a songwriter, started composing in the pandemic times, using the guitar as a comping instrument and Spanish poetry as a source of inspiration for her lyrics. Álvaro Rey de Viñas (1996, Toledo) is a musical producer and trumpet player. He studied his bachelor in classical music in Katarina Gurska Conservatory in Madrid and currently he is studying jazz trumpet at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.During the pandemic he started his first steps on the musical production, being influenced by artists like Max Cooper, Mr. Bill, Flume… but also other musical genres like pop, hip-hop, classical music, jazz and flamenco.
