Wael Shawky, Drama 1882 | The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles
Feb 20–Mar 16, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
MOCA presents the U.S. premiere of Wael Shawky’s (b. 1971 Alexandria, Egypt) widely celebrated film installation Drama 1882. Debuted at the Egyptian Pavilion of the 2024 Venice Biennale, this riveting, moving image work takes the form of an eight-part opera, performed for the camera and filmed in a historic theater in Alexandria. Drama 1882 takes the populist Urabi revolution in Egypt against British imperialism (1879-1882) as its foundation, specifically a cafe brawl between a local donkey owner and a Maltese man that unleashed events that precipitated over seventy years of British colonial rule in Egypt. Seamlessly integrating fact, speculation, and fiction, Shawky proposes alternatives to established records. Sung entirely in classical Arabic by professional performers with sensational costumes and against the backdrop of colorful, expressionist sets, Drama 1882 is a spectacular restaging of historical events and further explores Shawky’s interest in historical counter-narratives, ultimately emphasizing the futility of war while probing the implications of drama itself. According to Shawky, the work “conjures a sense of entertainment, of catastrophe, and our inherent doubt in history.”

Gustave Caillebotte: Painting Men | The Getty
Feb 25–May 25, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
French painter Gustave Caillebotte’s interest in male subjects sharply distinguishes him from his Impressionist peers. Overwhelmingly, he observed and depicted the men in his life—including his brothers, bachelor friends, fellow sportsmen, and the workers and bourgeois of his neighborhood—and did so in bracingly original paintings that often subverted artistic and gender norms. His distinctive vision of modern masculinity is considered here for the first time in a major international loan exhibition.

Roski Talks: Maria Maea | USC Roski Graduate Building
Mar 11, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
ABOUT MARIA MAEA Maria Maea is a multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture, installation, film and sound. Through her art practice, she deepens her connection to land, somatic memory, and ancestry. Her works act as a residue of her lived experience as a first generation Los Angeleno of Samoan and Mexican heritage. Using plants and repurposed found material gathered throughout Los Angeles, Maea builds film set-like sculptures that relate to storytelling & myth-making. She uses palm fronds foraged from the greater Los Angeles area to build these sculptures that play in the space between figurative and abstraction. These sculptures, called future ancestors, are made from concrete, rebar, collected objects and both living and dead plants. The work seeks to complicate art’s relationship with institutions around ideas of contamination and preservation. ABOUT ROSKI TALKS The USC Roski School’s Roski Talks lecture series offers engaging weekly presentations from leading visual artists, design innovators, scholars, performance artists, architects, and other influential figures throughout the academic year. These events are a popular among the Roski community and frequently attract members of the public. Held in an intimate setting, Roski Talks encourage audience participation and open dialogue.
