Launch // Lansio: Fanatic | G39

Cardiff
Arts
Launch: Thursday 17th April Open: Wed - Sat, 11.00 - 17.00 19/04/25 - 14/06/25 What is your personal specialist subject? We all have particular things that we are alert to, things we are fans of, the collections, repetitions, accumulations of experiences or objects that run parallel with our everyday lives. Sometimes there’s a very fine line between the largely-positive word fan and the slightly-too-far fanatic. Sometimes these things are excitedly public, other times they are private, lone pursuits. Sometimes we might not fully understand what drives us toward them. We’ve brought nine artists together to respond to this prompt, with new works and existing collections. // Beth yw dy bwnc arbenigol personol? Mae gan bob un ohonom bethau penodol ‘dyn ni’n ffan ohonynt, y casgliadau, ailadroddiadau, pentyrrau o brofiadau neu wrthrychau sy’n rhedeg yn baralel gyda’n bywydau bob dydd. Weithiau mae llinell denau rhwng y gair ffan sydd gan amlaf yn bositif, a’r mymryn-dros-ben-llestri ffanatig. Weithiau mae’r pethau hyn yn gyffrous a chyhoeddus, adegau eraill maent yn weithgareddau unigol, preifat. Weithiau efallai ‘dyn ni ddim yn deall yn gyfan gwbl beth sy’n ein hel ni i’w cyfeiriad. ‘Dyn ni wedi uno naw artist i ymateb i’r ysgogiad hwn, gyda gwaith newydd a chasgliadau sy’n bodoli eisoes. Some of the artists respond to popular culture, particularly when it is experienced in their formative years. Roxy Topia and Paddy Gould’s work has been heavily influenced by pulp film and low budget cinema. This comes to the foreground in their recent research, into Astrovision, a video rental shop in Gloucestershire in the mid 80’s where Roxy’s nan used to work. Abi Birkinshaw is bringing their idol into their art, Dolly Parton is leading the way as she has done for Abi many times over the years. Luke Roberts embraces contradiction and divergence from cultural norms and expectations around identity. An obsession with cars is the subject of Luke’s new work in sculpture and painting. Other artists go further back, into childhood experiences and ways of understanding them. Alice Banfield, in the mode of subversive fables and personal mythology, explores transition objects. Developed from characterful toys of her own childhood, her sculptures and drawings reflect the overloved objects, that are both grounding, and pleasingly distancing from the real world. Tina Rogers has a moment that she escapes to, a fantasy moment from a Disney film and has made it into a colouring book, a repeated drawing, keeping in the lines of herself again and again. Some artists explore obsessions, or repetitions as ways of navigating the world around them. Farah Allibhai is making several repetitions of one action, somewhere between obsession and ritual – a simple shelf that forms an altar, a shrine, of gathered items that hold significance and hope. Mohamed Hassan is looking at generational obsession. His father was as obsessed with photography as he is. There is a compulsion to the way that Mohamed makes work, he responds to life with photography. There is also a look at collections, at accumulations that gain significance by their number. Dead Paisley has a habit of collecting the overlooked, unwanted and unusual. Her most sacred acquisitions are teeth - tiny relics of the body. She is shifting gears from curator to artist by displaying her collection in our warehouse, which used to be a dental manufacturing workshopEmii Alrai, often traveling for her work, presents 49 postcards from a large personal collection, reflecting her research trips and diversions, from ancient artifacts to volcanos through elvis in to pure kitsch. // Mae rhai o’r artistiaid yn ymateb i ddiwylliant poblogaidd, yn arbennig pan maent wedi ei brofi yn eu blynyddoedd ffurfiannol. Mae gwaith Roxy Topia a Paddy Gould wedi cael ei ysbrydoli’n fawr gan ffilm pulp a sinema cyllideb isel. Mae hyn yn dod i’r amlwg yn eu gwaith ymchwil diweddaraf i Astrovision, sef siop rhentu yn swydd Gaerloyw yn yr 80au canol lle'r oedd nain Roxy yn arfer gweithio. Mae Abi Birkinshaw yn dod a’u delw i’w chelf gyda Dolly Parton yn arwain y ffordd yr union fel mae hi wedi gwneud i Abi llawer tro ar hyd y blynyddoedd. Mae Luke Roberts yn cofleidio croesddywediad a dargyfeiredd o normau diwylliannol a disgwyliadau ynghylch hunaniaeth. Obsesiwn gyda cheir yw pwnc gwaith newydd Luke mewn paentio a cherflunio. Mae artistiaid eraill yn mynd yn ôl ymhellach, i brofiadau plentyndod a ffyrdd o’u deall. Mae Alice Banfield, mewn ffurf chwedlau tanseiliol a mytholeg bersonol yn archwilio gwrthrychau trawsnewid. Wedi datblygu o deganau llawn cymeriad ei phlentyndod, mae ei cherfluniau a’i darluniau yn adlewyrchu’r gwrthrychau or-garedig, sydd yn ddi-lol ac yn ddymunol bell o’r byd go iawn. Mae gan Tina Rogers ddihangfa, sef moment ffantasi o ffilm Disney ac wedi ei droi i mewn i lyfr lliwio, darluniad ailadrodd, yn cadw o fewn ei llinellau ei hun dro ar ôl tro. Mae rhai artistiaid yn archwilio obsesiynau, neu ailadroddiadau fel ffyrdd o fordwyo’r byd o’u hamgylch. Mae Farah Allibhai yn gwneud sawl adroddiad o’r un weithred, rhywle rhwng obsesiwn a defod - silff syml sy’n ffurfio allor, cysegrfa o eitemau casgledig sy’n dal arwyddocâd a gobaith. Mae Mohamed Hassan yn edrych ar obsesiwn cenedliadol. Roedd gan ei dad gymaint o obsesiwn gyda ffotograffiaeth ag yntau. Mae gorfodaeth yn y modd mae Mohamed yn creu gwaith; yn ymateb i fywyd gyda ffotograffiaeth. Mae yno hefyd olwg ar gasgliadau, ar bentyrrau sy’n ennill sylwedd yn ôl eu nifer. Mae gan Paisley Randell-Shillabeer bethau ar ben ei gilydd, mae hi’n casglu’r pethau nad oes eu heisiau gan eraill. Rhan o’i chasgliad yw dannedd. Mae hi’n newid o fod yn guradur i fod yn artist i arddangos ei chasgliad yn ein warws oedd arfer bod yn gartref i gwmni gwneuthurwr deintyddol. Mae Emii Alrai, sy’n aml yn teithio ar gyfer ei gwaith, yn cyflwyno 49 o gardiau post o gasgliad personol eang, yn adlewyrchu ei thripiau ymchwil a dargyfeiriadau, o arteffactau hynafol i losgfynyddoedd a thrwy Elvis i sothach llwyr.
