GTGO "Ride It Keep It": Free Bike Ride, Western Cycleway | Waterview Reserve (Oakley Park)
Apr 5, 2025 (UTC+12)ENDED
Street
Ride It Keep it: GTGO Group ride + keep the bike! Western Cycleway Want to get into biking but don't have a bike? Thanks to the Auckland Council Climate Grant, Got To Get Out has developed a program called 'Ride It Keep It' to get locals riding on recycled bicycles! ** This invite is to people of all ages, as long as you can already ride a bike but dont have one. It will be an easy grade bike ride ** The mission of this program is to reduce Auckland's climate impact, by making it easier for people to ride a bike instead of drive.
We are further helping the environment by diverting waste out of landfill and scrap, giving hundreds of old bikes a 'second life' and keeping them in use. A team of mechanics and volunteers at the Got To Get Out Workshop (Glenfield Auckland) are hard at work fixing bikes, and we will bring a selection of refurbished bikes to these free rides. Who gets a bike? Anyone who does not already have a working bike, and will use the bike to get around ideally instead of driving! You can only get one free bike from us, so while you can come to any of our events in this series, you can only get one free one. About the ride: Please note this will be an easy grade bike ride in Auckland. We will do the western cycleway which will take about 2-3 hours in total. We will start in Waterview, then head out along the Western Cycle Path towards Westgate - going as far as this group is able, before turning back to base. Details: - Meet at 9:45am - Meet Waterview Reserve, Oakley Park - Bike fitting starts once all riders are there, - Bike ride starts when everyone is on a bike, we will do a quick skills session first, - There may be an opportunity to 'swap bikes' and try a few, though the decision of 'who gets which bike' is made by Got To Get Out staff - Ride ends 1pm thereabouts on our return to Waterview. Do I need to know how to ride? YES! Though it's OK if it's been a while! This activity is not a formal 'lesson', so you need to know how to ride - even if it's been a while since you were last on a bike. There will not be time to teach you to ride if you have never ridden before. A basic skills session will happen at the start of the ride, but the main purpose of this is to show you how the free bike/s work, as opposed to teaching how to ride. Can you come with your own bike? Absolutely! If you own a bike already, come along and ride too! There are 10 tickets for BYO bikes, and 10 tickets for those who need one. What bike can you keep? You are welcome to 'try out' a few different bikes, but ultimately it will come down to who fits which bike. It would help us if you tell us your size (height) before you come along. We will allocate bikes based on size and intended usage etc, and the decision of who gets which bike is the decision of Got To Get Out staff. Donate a bike? If you wish to donate a bike, this is a great time to pop along and give us a bike! Just message us prior so we know if the bike is suitable for our needs. We make no promise that your exact size bike will be here but will do a our best to fit each person to a bike. Helmets: We will provide helmets for the group ride, but not to keep. We are not funded to provide helmets to keep sorry, so you need to sort out a helmet yourself. If you get a bike? If you get a free bike, you need to take it away ON THE DAY. Also, expect to have to do a survey about your likely use of the bike. If you wish to rehome the bike within one year, it's expected you offer it back to Got To Get Out to gift to someone else. Any questions, please email robert@gottogetout.com You've #gottogetout riding!

Hands, Feet and Feelings : Exhibition of Art by Candice Carlisle Join us for our first exhibition of 2025 to celebrate a body of work produced by emerging artist Candice Carlisle. This show uses humour and whimsy to confront painful realities. As a disabled, neurodivergent artist Candice, uses depictions of her own physicality and feelings to question where the true issues lie in systems ‘scaffolded by ableist ideals.’ About the artist Candice (she/her) is a disabled artist living in Brisbane with her neurodivergent family and many furry pets. After putting a nursing career on hold due to worsening health and autistic burnout, Candice rediscovered emotional expression in the visual arts. Despite spending her whole life creating, Candice has only recently embraced artmaking as a tool for wellbeing and recovery. As an emerging artist, Candice is developing a multidisciplinary practice exploring themes that relate to her personal experiences. In this exhibition, her works comment on the intersection of experiences of womanhood and motherhood with experiences of disability and inequity. Join the Frost Art Museum for Slow Art Day, a global event founded in 2010 with a mission to help more people discover the joy of looking at and loving art. Why slow? When people look slowly at a piece of art they discover they can see and experience art without the help of experts. Come and immerse yourself in a day filled with art, discovery, and self-expression, featuring guided meditation, collaborative writing and poetry games, traditional ecological knowledge, and more byLove the Everglades Movement (Rev. Houston Cypress and Jean Sarmiento). Slow Art Day at the Frost Art Museum FIU is dedicated to the memory of Helena Venero. Featured guestsLove the Everglades Movement (Rev. Houston R. Cypress & Jean Sarmiento)
Rev. Houston R. Cypress (Otter Clan of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida) is a Two-Spirit, indigiqueer artist and environmentalist. The descendant of a woodcarver and the son of a dressmaker, he appreciated art as a form of learning from an early age, woodworking with his grandfather and collaborating with his mother in the production of Miccosukee fashion shows. He considers poetry to be the foundation of his artistic and spiritual practices, including his audiovisual work. He enjoys bringing communities together through art and technology. Houston’s belief that when it comes to protecting the environment, indigenous rights are everyone’s rights, encourages one to be in creative solidarity with nature because it expands our practice of “chosen family”. Born in Costa Rica, Jean Sarmiento’s work echoes the vibrant culture of his homeland through intricate glass mosaics inspired by the traditional carts of Sarchí. These mosaics honor craftsmanship and act as symbolic shields that protect nature and tradition. As a landscaper, Jean focuses on creating environmentally conscious art that provides habitats for native plants. His involvement with the Love The Everglades movement fosters ecological healing and advocates for the preservation of this vital ecosystem. Each work embodies Jean’s commitment to biodiversity and serves as a dialogue between cultural identity and ecological responsibility, inviting an appreciation of beauty and nature.
