Perception, communication, connection: peeking into the hidden social life of plants Do plants have a social life? Yes! Dr. Susan Dudley will give us all the dirt about how plants make friends (and foe!). Plants sense their environment, communicate with other organisms, compete, and help others. However, their behaviours are very slow, and we have trouble interpreting plant behaviours as helpful or harmful. This talk will highlight what we know about how plants interact with each other, and especially with relatives. What are the questions we are now asking, and why are we asking them? Following our talk, guests will be invited to tour the NEW McMaster Biology Greenhouse. This state-of-the-art 11,400 sq. ft. greenhouse feature a sunken floor offering more space for plants to grow upward. It is designed with climate-controlled spaces and dedicated research and learning areas. Sails just under the roof will help biologists customize light, and watering will be automated, further supporting ideal research conditions for the thousands of plants encompassing more than 200 species. About the Sage Conversations Series The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging is hosting a series of community-targeted events that allow people to learn more about what’s happening at the University while leaving lots of space for questions and conversations. MIRA has selected a mix of its most requested spots to visit on campus and some of McMaster’s leading aging researchers to participate and encourage more open engagement with those that we may not have the pleasure of meeting in the past. This event features poetry written by 3 Northern Ireland based writers, Kelly Creighton, Linda McKenna, and Emma McKervey. It is inspired by the stories of women and crime in 19th Century court cases against working class women. The format is a 15min reading each, and then a panel style discussion of the work, how we researched and put our collections together. Kelly Creighton's Unbecoming is about the Staten Island witch, Polly Bodine in the 1840s. Emma McKervey’s Highland Boundary Fault looks at her great grandparent’s love letters which were intercepted by a jealous village girl and resulted in a Sheriff’s Court Case in the 1890s. Linda McKenna’s Four Thousand Keys is inspired by the case of Elizabeth Dunham who was tried in the Old Bailey for the theft of thousands of keys to a range of public buildings around London, Information Source: Sir Hans Sloane Centre | eventbrite
