Unknown Sitters | The Historic New Orleans Collection
Apr 5, 2024 (UTC-6)ENDED
New Orleans
The exhibition "Unknown Sitters" at The Historic New Orleans Collection will feature a captivating display of portraits of unidentified individuals from the historical record. Through these portraits, the lost identities of the sitters come to light, offering a glimpse into their lives and the era they lived in. The absence of names attached to these portraits, often due to various historical reasons, has not diminished their power to communicate. By examining details such as clothing, settings, inscriptions, and artist biographies, curators have pieced together narratives that shed light on the diverse lives captured in these artworks. This collection of portraits not only reflects the landscape of portraiture in New Orleans but also highlights the historical gaps and biases present in the records. Particularly poignant is the emphasis on restoring individual identities, especially for marginalized groups like children, the elderly, women, and people of color. The exhibition challenges visitors to engage with historical portraiture in a new light, urging them to remember and imagine the untold stories behind these mysterious faces. Plan your visit to 520 Royal Street, Tricentennial Wing, 1st Floor, from April 5, 2024, to October 6, 2024, Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.
