FINE ART RESEARCH (FAR) TALKS: RHONA EVE CLEWS | G30 Richard Hamilton
Nov 12, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Whether melting her body into the innards of her home photocopier, filming erupting geyser postcards found on eBay or crawling on her belly to enter macro-pollen perspectives, Rhona works across text, image, and performance in attempts to collapse ecological distance. Her practice foregrounds our somatic interconnectedness with the earth and looks to eco-feminisms, phenomenology, science-fiction literature and cinema alongside innovations within self-help psychology. She physically performs her compulsion to meld minds with multiple subjectivities and clamber inside other ‘bodies’ drawing upon her past of growing up a hippie to re-situate photography, writing and filmmaking into expanded, somatic, eco- feminist practices and contribute to wider ecologies of care.
Rhona exhibits internationally and often speaks, co-curates and teaches on the connective tissue between art, ecology and psychology/spirituality with previous audiences including Chelsea College of Art, UCL Department of the Anthropocene and London Science Fiction Research Community. She has performed for Black Mountain College Museum, Creative Time, New York and completed art residencies in UK, Australia, and USA.Rhona was self-taught in art until aged 33, has a Bachelors in Psychology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Photography, and an MFA in Fine Art, from Slade School of Fine Art. Her simultaneous healing career (25+ years) unconventionally began as her father was a convicted armed robber, plunging her into addressing her self-esteem, embracing myriad art, ecology, healing and somatic approaches. She has a background in Clinical Psychology and now works as a Healer and Mentor. She’s currently studying a Diploma in Environmental Humanities, is a lively member of two art collectives and co-runs The More- Than-Human book club at Barbican library, which collaborated with RE/SISTERS for an edition alongside the major exhibition, November 2023. Nicholas Rodger - Book Launch: A Naval History of Britain | Old Library
Nov 14, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
The final instalment of N.A.M. Rodger's definitive, authoritative trilogy on Britain's naval history. At the end of the French and Napoleonic wars, British sea-power was at its apogee. But by 1840, as one contemporary commentator put it, the Admiralty was full of ‘intellects becalmed in the smoke of Trafalgar’. How the Royal Navy reformed and reinvigorated itself in the course of the nineteenth century is just one thread in this magnificent book, which refuses to accept standard assumptions and analyses. Rodger sets all this in the essential context of politics and geo-strategy. The character and importance of leading admirals – Beatty, Fisher, Cunningham – is assessed, together with the roles of other less famous but no less consequential figures. Based on a lifetime’s learning, it is the culmination of one of the most significant British historical works in recent decades. Naval specialists will find much that is new here, and will be invigorated by the originality of Rodger’s judgements; but everyone who is interested in the one of the central threads in British history will find it rewarding. Nicholas A.M. Rodger is Senior Research Fellow at All Souls.

About the exhibition This autumn, the Whitworth presents There’s no Place a significant new exhibition by acclaimed Thai artist Jakkai Siributr. THE WASTES - Roy Claire Potter in conversation with Gareth Gavin | Blackwell's Bookshop

If you would like a signed copy but cannot make the event, please contact us on 0161 274 3331 or manchester@blackwell.co.uk and we can arrange this for you. About the book: After the death of her mother a woman decides to visit a familiar strip of rural upland, darkly identified on the South Pennines Ordnance Survey map as: The Waste. As she moves between trains, shunted by public encounters and haunted by past bar jobs, damp bedsits and a press shot of Vanessa Redgrave smoking in the bath, found slipped between the pages of her mother's diary, the threshold between her past, present and future self dissolves. Fringe images she has neither designed nor authored begin to steer her toward grid reference 3499, where underfoot the semi-solid mud turns with worms and ants. About the author: Influenced by linguistics and performance theory, Roy Claire Potter is an artist writer who performs, publishes and exhibits. They often collaborate with musicians and sound artists to make audio for music festivals and radio. Roy has recently presented solo and collaborative work with Book Works, Cafe OTO, Serpentine, and Camden Arts Centre (all 2024); Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts (2023); Counterflows, Cafe OTO, and PRIMARY (all 2022); Reduced Listening for BBC Radio 3, and A plus A gallery (all 2021); and Tate Britain with Tate Publishing (2019). Their debut novel The Wastes was published by Book Works earlier this summer, and shorter works have been published with Ma Bibliotheque, Dostoyevsky Wannabe, Hotel Partisan, Tate Publishing, MOSTYN and CCA Derry-Londonderry. Live and studio recorded audio works are released with Cafe OTO’s OTOROKU and TAKUROKU labels, London; Sub Rosa in Belgium; Chocolate Monk in Brighton, and Fort Evil Fruit in Dublin. Roy is Senior Lecturer of Fine Art at Liverpool John Moores University, and they are represented by A plus A gallery, Venice. Roy will be in conversation with Gareth Gavin, Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing in the Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester.

Nov 18, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies presents:Heungboda: Exploring Korean Traditional Pansori and Folk Songsintroduced by Paris K-Vox Festival and Chae Soo-jung Sound GroupExperience the rich cultural heritage of Korean traditional music, as musicians bring these age-old tunes to life. Come and be a part ofHeungboga! The K-Vox (Korean Voice) Festival (Directors : Han Yumi & Hervé Péjaudier) was launched in Paris, France in 2012, with the slogan of « Globalizing and Popularizing Pansori», marked its 12th anniversary this year. Following the publication of the traditional pansori « Sugungga (2012) » and « Simcheongga (2023) », this year « Heungboga » was translated into French and published in Paris (éd. Imago). As part of the French publishing celabration of « Dongpyeonje Heungboga (edited by Chae Soo-jung) », passed down by Park Nok-ju, Park Song-hee and Chae Soo-jung, we invited professor of KNUA (Korea National University of Arts, Seoul) with her sound Group « Chae Soojung Soridan » to introduce pansori transmitted orally since 17th centry, which has been designated as « Korea's National Intangible Cultural Property No. 5 (1964) » and « UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (2003) » to English-speaking audiences interested in Korean traditional music and classical literature at Oxford University and the Korean Cultural Center in London. « Chae Soojung Soridan » , a sound group formed to promote the beauty of Korean traditional music, led by Chae Soo-jung followed by her students will present a Daegeum (a Korean traditional instrument) solo, five short extracts of traditional pansori and the deep and profound sound of Namdo (the southern provinces of the Korean Peninsula) folk songs. In particular, there will be an opportunity to learn these songs first hand, for the audience. 1. Daegeum solo byYu Suhwan(10m) -« Cheongseong-gok » « A piece of music high-pitched sound » A variation of Taepyeonga, the final song of the Gagok song cycle, Cheongseong Jajinhanip is played either as daegeum solo or danso solo. It is also known as Cheongseonggok, “cheongseong” meaning high-pitched sound ; jajinhanip is a Korean for Sakdaeyeop, which is a song in the Gagok cycle. The daegeum solo version has delicate and exquisite ornaments, so it no longer sounds like a mere accompaniment, but an independent piece of instrumental music. 2.Five short extracts of traditional pansori(45m) : buk drum (soribuk) by Gyun Eunkyung 1) « Pile Song » (Simcheongga) with the Gayageum par Sim Yuna 2) « Tiger is coming » (Sugungga) by Shin Yunju 3) « Set Fire » (Jeokbyeokga) by Chae Soojung 4) « Love Song » (Chunhyangga) by Ham Suyeon & Jang Yerim 5) « I’d like to go » (Chunhyangga) by Ham Suyeon 6) « Song of The Pumpkin » (Heungboga) par Chae Soojung 3.Folk songs of the southern style (Namdo Minyo) (15m) : Song : Chae Soojung, Ham Suyeon, Jang Yerim, Shin Yunju Daegeum : Yu Su-hwan Gayageum : Sim Yuna Gosu (Buk drum) : Gyun Eunkyung) -« Camellia Song (Dongbaek taryeong) » -« Arirang Medley (Arirang Yeongok) » 4.Let’s learn « pansori » (10min)

Arabella Byrne and Julia Hamilton 'In the Blood' with Alex Larman | Blackwell's Bookshop
Nov 20, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
In the Blood In the Blood is a memoir in two voices, those of a mother and daughter both in the grip of the disease that has ravaged generations of women in their family. Julia, aged sixty-five, and Arabella, thirty-eight, ended up in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous just nine months apart. In some ways it's a predictable story; two addicts drank and destroyed and ransacked until they could drink no more. In others, it is entirely unlike any account of motherhood or addiction that has ever been told. This is not a recovery memoir, but rather an unflinching family drama spanning generations, whilst looking pain and shame directly in the eye. Confronting the difficulty of writing faithfully about those we love and the ways in which memory blurs the boundaries of fact, this is the story of women who grew up in shadows, and have navigated their way out of darkness. Brutally honest, darkly funny and bursting with hope, In The Blood is the sound of the howling cry of illness and betrayal across generations, and what you do with that sound when you hear it.

Susie Dent in conversation with Janice Hallett | Blackwell's Bookshop
Nov 23, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Guilty by Definition - Susie Dent Guilty by Definition is a love letter not only to language but to the city of Oxford, wrapped within an intriguing mystery of a missing woman and considering the emotional aftershocks of her disappearance on those left behind.
She'd known there would be ghosts in Oxford. Martha wasn't afraid of any headless horsemen, or nuns haunting the local ruins; it was Charlie, always Charlie she was afraid would find her.
When an anonymous letter is delivered to the Clarendon English Dictionary, it is rapidly clear that this is not the usual lexicographical enquiry. Instead, the letter hints at secrets and lies linked to a particular year.
For Martha Thornhill, the new senior editor, the date can mean only one thing: the summer her brilliant older sister Charlie went missing.
After a decade abroad, Martha has returned home to the city whose ancient institutions have long defined her family. Have the ghosts she left behind her been waiting for her return?
When more letters arrive, and Martha and her team pull apart the complex clues within them, the mystery becomes ever more insistent and troubling. It seems Charlie had been keeping a powerful secret, and someone is trying to lead the lexicographers towards the truth. But other forces are no less desperate to keep it well and truly buried. The Examiner - Janice Hallett Six Students. One Murder. Your Time Starts Now... The mature students of Royal Hastings University's new art course have been trouble from day one. From acclaimed artist Alyson who seems oddly overqualified, to hapless Patrick who can barely operate design software, and city boy Cameron who blusters his way through assignments. Not to mention Jem, who's a gifted young sculptor... but cross her at your peril. The year-long course is blighted by students setting fire to one another's artwork, a rumoured extra-marital affair and a disastrous road trip. But finally they are given their last assignment: to build an art installation for a local manufacturer. With six students who have nothing in common except their clashing personal agendas, what could possibly go wrong? The answer is: murder. When the external examiner arrives to assess the students' coursework, he becomes convinced that a student was killed on the course and that the others covered it up. But is he right? Only a close examination of the evidence will reveal the truth. Your time starts now

NEVERLAND - Vanessa Kisuule on the pleasures and perils of fandom | Blackwell's Bookshop
Nov 25, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
We're delighted to welcome Vanessa Kisuule to Blackwell's to celebrate her new book, NEVERLAND - a fascinating and personal look at the pleasures and perils of fandom. Vanessa will be in conversation with Gabby Humphreys. About the book: Vanessa Kisuule is a big Michael Jackson fan. This fixation once gave her great joy, but now it keeps her up at night. In her bracingly honest, energetic and lively book she explores the fall-out from that fandom and how, or if, we can hold people to account whilst loving them at the same time.
Why do famous musicians mean so much to us? How does the pop culture machine both mirror and magnify the worst aspects of human nature? Why is it so hard to accept that the people we love, famous or not, are capable of doing terrible things?
As debates rage on about abusive public figures, Kisuule asks not just if we should separate the art from the artist, but how this moral conundrum informs the way we shape our relationships, families and notions of social justice. Witty, poetic and with references to R. Kelly, Britney Spears and a host of other famous faces, Neverland is both an ardent love letter to the music we love and an unflinching look at the costs of hero worship. ‘The most human untangling of a complex and intricate love that I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Incisive, and as funny as it is sharp’ - CANDICE CARTY-WILLIAMS, author of Queenie About the author: Vanessa Kisuuleis a writer and performer based in Bristol. She has been featured on BBC iPlayer, Radio 1 and Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour , and has written for the Guardian, NME and Lonely Planet. Burning Eye Books publish her poetry. Kisuule is the co-tutor for Southbank New Poets Collective 2021-22 and was Bristol City Poet 2018-20. Her poem on the historic toppling of Edward Colston’s statue ‘Hollow’ gained over 600,000 views on Twitter in three days.
