A Conversation: Reggie Burrows Hodges and Davide Gasparotto | Karma

Jan 11, 2025 (UTC-8)
Santa Monica
Arts
Fine Art
Karma presents a conversation between artist Reggie Burrows Hodges and senior curator of paintings and chair, curatorial affairs, at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Davide Gasparotto, on the occasion of Hodges’s exhibition Authorities of Reason at 7351 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles, on view from January 11–February 13, 2025. Reggie Burrows Hodges (b. 1965, Compton, California) explores storytelling and visual metaphor through paintings that engage with questions of identity, community, truth, and memory. Starting from a black ground, he develops the scene around his figures with painterly, foggy brushwork, playing with how perception is affected when the descriptive focus is placed not on human agents but on their surroundings. Figures materialize in recessive space, stripped of physical identifiers; bodies are described by their painted context. These formal decisions speak to Hodges’s embrace of tenuous ambiguities and his close observation of the relationship between humans and their environment. He lives in the Bay Area. Davide Gasparotto is senior curator of paintings and chair, curatorial affairs, at the J. Paul Getty Museum. He arrived at the Getty Museum from Modena, Italy, where he was the director of the Galleria Estense, a museum of Italian paintings from the 14th to 18th centuries. Gasparotto formerly served as curator at the National Gallery in Parma, and was a visiting fellow at both the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The author of many books, his areas of interest include painting, sculpture, and the decorative arts of the Renaissance, the rediscovery of classical antiquity between the Middle Ages and the 18th century, and the history of collecting. These programs are free, but space is limited. RSVP is essential. --- Reggie Burrows Hodges, Authorities of Reason January 11–February 13 Karma 7351 Santa Monica Boulevard Los Angeles --- Image: Reggie Burrows Hodges, Golden Triangle (Paris), 2023 Information Source: Karma | eventbrite
