Layla Martinez on WOODWORM with Daniela Blei | Medicine for Nightmares
Nov 4, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Medicine for Nightmares in San Francisco welcomes Spanish writer Layla Martínez to discuss the English release of her debut novel, Woodworm, translated by Sophie Hughes and Annie McDermott. She will be in conversation with Daniela Blei. This event is co-presented by the Center for the Art of Translation and The Ruby. The house breathes. The house contains bodies and secrets. The house is visited by ghosts, by angels that line the roof like insects, and by saints that burn the bedsheets with their haloes. It was built by a smalltime hustler as a means of controlling his wife, and even after so many years, their daughter and her granddaughter can't leave. They may be witches or they may just be angry, but when the mysterious disappearance of a young boy draws unwanted attention, the two isolated women, already subjects of public scorn, combine forces with the spirits that haunt them in pursuit of something that resembles justice. In this lush translation by Sophie Hughes and Annie McDermott, Layla Martinez's eerie debut novel is class-conscious horror that drags generations of monsters into the sun. Described by Mariana Enriquez as a house of women and shadows, built from poetry and revenge, this vision of a broken family in our unjust world places power in the hands of the eccentric, the radical, and the desperate.

Gilded Glass Ornament Workshop with Master Gilder Lynne Rutter | Lynne Rutter Studio
Nov 9, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Join us for a small group, hands-on workshop to learn the ancient art of verre églomisé with Odd Salon Fellow Lynne Rutter In this class we’ll delve into some gilding history, while learning how to mirror glass the historic way, with finely beaten sheets of gold. The practice of gilding dates back to at least 3000 BC, and can be found in tomb decorations, ornamentation, furniture and frames, and in works of religious and fine art. Gilded glass goes back to 1st century BC and maybe even further. Not much survives, as these pieces were delicate. What we now call “verre églomisé is a set of techniques that were only rarely used until the 18th century when a decorator and framer named Jean Baptiste Glomy became famous for gilded glass frames and mirrors. People began to say the glass has been “Glomy-fied” or églomisé. Glass gilding and back-painting glass was generally limited to clock cases and small items, until the mid-19th century when signwriters started making elaborate gilded glass signs to catch the light and attention for shops. Today, the practice of gilding still follows historical practices, handed down through generations of artisans. Ticket price includes supplies for the workshop, and everyone will go home with a fine art ornament of their own making. Create gilded Harvey ornament, or select an idea from designs we will have on hand. Lynne Rutteris a Fellow of Odd Salon, and is a fine art muralist and decorative painter based in San Francisco, whose work emphasizes site-specific design and authentic materials and techniques. She has been an active part of the design community for over 35 years and has completed hundreds of installations nationally and internationally. Opening Reception for "In Between" by the Romanian Art Collective of SF | International Art Museum of America
Nov 9, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Join IAMA in welcoming the Romanian Art Collective's exhibition In Between. In Between will open to the public on November 9th, 2024 with an opening reception from 2-5 PM. Expect to see great art, meet the artists, and enjoy complimentary bites and refreshments! About: In Between The experience of being here and there — caught in the space between — defines those who have uprooted, relocated, and engaged in a dynamic process of renewal and reinvention, embracing new cultures, while holding onto the memories of their past. This multimedia exhibit invites reflection on the complex challenges faced by individuals who cross physical, social, and emotional borders. It explores the deep feelings of foreignness that those who cross experience both at home and in their new environments through frames like nostalgia, memory, and a sense of living between worlds. About the collective:
Romanian Art Collective SF (RAC-SF), brings together a dynamic group of visual, performance, and applied artists, each of whom contribute their distinct personal viewpoints to the collective. RAC-SF’s mission is to engage and enrich the larger Bay Area artistic practice and discourse through exhibitions, public events, and collaborations. Our programs bridge the local Romanian community culturally and personally. On a broader level, we seek to foster dialogue and build connections with artistic communities through exhibitions and collaborative projects.
