May 20, 2025 (UTC+0)
Street
About the event: The Revd Dr Sam Wells will reflect on the nature of improvisation in the theatre and its implications for the use of scripture in Christian ethics today. In his book Improvisation: the Drama of Christian Ethics Sam Wells writes that improvisation in the theatre is “a practice through which actors seek to develop trust in themselves and one another in order that they may conduct unscripted dramas without fear.” Please do join us from 6pm, if you can, for a wine and soft drinks reception, included in the cost of your ticket. The lecture will begin at 7pm, and includes a Q&A. This is Radius's third lecture in memory of Dr Kathleen Hall. Kathleen was a scholar of medieval French literature, a notable poet, a considerable wit and a person of infinite charity and generosity. Her lifelong commitment to drama in church enriched the lives of many, both inside and outside Radius and the Church. TICKETS: This event is open to all. Tickets are £10 for Radius members, £12 non-members. Ticket cost is inclusive of the drinks reception from 6pm. Please buy in advance online by 12 noon on 19th May, if you can. If not, you are welcome to buy on the door from 6pm CASH ONLY. Venue information and how to get there is here - the lecture takes place in the lower hall. St Andrew's is a joint parish with St John's Waterloo which has a long history of involvement in the arts. It was the Festival of Britain church in 1951, when Radius was the official body organising the Festival's religious drama programme. About Radius: Radius Drama Society explores faith, belief, social and ethical questions and what it is to be human. If you are interested in the arts, culture and the big questions of today, we'd be delighted to meet you. Check out our video here, our website and follow us on social media to learn more about us. We welcome new members and please do consider joining us as we can't run events without members, but you don't have to be a member to attend events - we'd love to see you. Reading Modernism's Readers: Virginia Woolf, Psychoanalysis & Bestsellers | The Southern Belle
May 6, 2025 (UTC+0)
Street
In early twentieth-century literature, scenes of reading offer a fascinating glimpse at how modernist writers viewed the act of reading itself and understood the challenges posed by modernist texts. In this session, we will be in conversation with Helen Tyson about her 2024 book, Reading Modernism’s Readers: Virginia Woolf, Psychoanalysis and the Bestseller. Focusing primarily on the works of Virginia Woolf, Tyson explores scenes of reading in Woolf’s novels alongside writings by Marcel Proust, Ethel M. Dell, Sigmund Freud, James Strachey, Melanie Klein and Marion Milner. She argues that the “staged, fictionalised encounter with literary texts lies at the heart of early twentieth-century culture” and uses this to explore the way that reading is staged in literary modernism, bestselling novels, and psychoanalysis. In this session, we will discuss psychoanalysis and portraits of the child reader in Woolf, Proust, and Freud; Bestselling romance novels, their readers and the works of Ethel M.
