Images as History Seminar Series | UCL Institute of the Americas (Room 103)
Nov 19, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Gordon
This talk will survey the work of American photographer Helen Levitt, who is best known for her depictions of working-class children on the streets of New York City c.1940. Rather than consider her work within polarised social attitudes towards children as either innocent or primal, this talk argues that Levitt’s representation of the relationship between childhood and the street must be understood through her concerns with editing, movement, and public life. Understanding Levitt’s work in relation to aggregation and sequence, rather than through the dominant lens of primitivism, romanticism and the private subject allows for a historic reappraisal of an American modernism that has largely fallen out of sight.

Orwell’s Final Warning | Archaeology, Lecture Theatre (G6)
Jan 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Gordon
“The moral to be drawn from this dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one: Don’t let it happen. It depends on you.”What was Orwell’s final warning? On the 75th anniversary of George Orwell’s death, join D. J. Taylor, Sandra Newman and Jeffrey Wasserstrom to discuss the afterlife of Orwell’s final novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. ----------------- Are all interpretations of Nineteen Eighty-Four equal? Published just months before Orwell’s death, Nineteen Eighty-Four immediately sparked debate about its meaning. Was it a warning? A prophecy? Who or what was its target? When reviewers began interpreting the novel as an attack on the British Labour Party in particular, Orwell and his publishers felt compelled to issue a statement to the press clarifying his own beliefs. He was, he said, a supporter of the government, but he had set the novel in Britain because he wanted to show that “the seeds of totalitarian thought” could be found anywhere. When Orwell died just six months later, the statement took on the status of a deathbed appeal. However, despite Orwell’s best efforts, Nineteen Eighty-Four continues to be claimed by readers across the political spectrum and is increasingly wielded in support of extreme views, especially on social media. How have we got here? And will we ever be able to see the man beneath the myth?

Susan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. Mogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020), where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. Her career and contributions are further explored in Women of Vision: Histories in Feminist Film and Video, where a chapter is devoted to her impactful legacy.
