Paul Taylor | PianoDrome

Nov 9, 2024 (UTC+0)
Edinburgh
Arts
Dance
Paul Taylor is an accomplished pianist and keyboard player specializing in improvisation. The music is evocative, alluring and unique; combining unusual harmonies and sonorities with an original and fluid technique. In recent years, he has emerged as one of the most consistently interesting and innovative solo pianists, eschewing the conventional cliches associated with jazz improvisation in favor of an unorthodox, harmonically complex and often compellingly beautiful musical language that is often inspired by the classical tradition. Nonetheless, his playing also encapsulates the restless capacity for invention that is a cornerstone of jazz. Paul Taylor was a 2018 northern line R6 ambassador artist supported by Jazz North, using public funding from Arts Council England. He also participated in Cheltenham Jazz Festival's prestigious Creative Lab collaborative sessions in April 2021. Brilliant : Stuart Maconie, BBC Radio 6 Freak Zone . A rare phenomenon : International Piano Magazine. Those hands delineate a high-yielding path inside the secret rooms of a harmony that draws colours and nuances from romantic pasts, transcendental visions, defined yet shifting tonalities...an instrumentalist whose inner depth and speed of translation from intuition to creative act appear to be in direct proportion : Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes blog, February 2021. A very assured work indeed : Jazzwise magazine, review of Paul's 2021 album, Via . A series of harmonically and melodically rich, compelling improvisations : London Jazz News, February 2021. A solo improviser of outstanding scope and originality , ...his solo excursions on piano proceed with an unpredictable but constantly gripping logic that often feels as close to the richly lyrical and harmonic approach of Romantic period classical composers as it does to jazz : Paul Bream's Jazz Alert. Now firmly established as the most original improvising pianist in the North East It’s incredible that Taylor can create such a full and immense sound and feeling with only solo piano : Jazz North East Gorgeous : The Guardian A Chopin of the contemporary art music era : Neil March, Exile FM Information Source: Pip @ Pianodrome | eventbrite

Bethany Edwards & Tess Letham | Residency sharing | Dance Base, Scotland's National Centre for Dance

Nov 15, 2024 (UTC+0)
Edinburgh
Arts
Three Act Improvisation Bethany and Tess Letham (collaborating performer) will be working together to begin developing the structure of an improvised performance in three acts; two solos and a duet. Inspired by theatre and comedy improvisation they will be playing with using prompts and input from the audience as springboards for performance. Though working with solely improvised content they will be searching for a specific compositional approach. A shared practice of strategies and concepts built together to form a foundation from which the unexpected can grow. The material Tess and Bethany will be working with involves combinations of voice and movement; improvised text and sound alongside dance and physicality. They are both interested in the theatricality and storytelling potential of movement and the nuance offered by words and imagery. The overarching question they will be addressing is what are the parameters for 'success' in this form of improvised performance? Bethany is a dance artist working across improvisation, performance, teaching, devising and creative facilitation. She is a founding member of bad body chaos code, a pop-punk band working collectively to produce euphoric, surreal performances. In 2022 they took their debut album ‘Headliner’ – a comedic riot grrrl witchy extravaganza – on a European tour. As a performer Bethany has created new works with choreographers including Becky Namgauds, Tim Casson, Tess Letham and Hannes Langolf. Touring across the UK and Europe in contexts as diverse as pubs, galleries, stately homes, theatres and high streets. Bethany regularly performs improvisation solo, in duets and ensemble. She has performed with Collective Endeavours and Something Smashing across the UK. And performed solo at Roadhouse in Leeds and at TicTac Art Centre in Brussels. She also works extensively in inclusive dance, currently as Artist Development Lead for Anjali, a dance company for artists with learning disabilities. Within and beyond the dance world Bethany is interested in bodies as storytellers, working non-hierarchically and seeking out experiences of collective joy. Tess is an award winning performer and prominent dance-theatre maker based in Edinburgh. Her work spans theatre, film, outdoor and large-scale spectacle and has included performance projects by Shotput, Simon Fildes/Cagoule, David Zambrano, PanicLab, and Mairead McClean/The Wapping Project, as well as her own productions. Her own creations have included “How to Survive the Future”, and mid-scale work, “Remedy for Memory”. Her latest projects are being developed under FairPlay, which include “Where We Used to Wander” and currently in development, “What ever happened to Harmony Banks?”. Improvisation is at the core of her performance practice, in 2019 she participated in 60 Days of Improvisation for Performance with internationally renowned teacher David Zambrano, supported by Creative Scotland, In 2021, she was awarded the #LoveDanceScotland bursary for her project “Six for Six”, supported by Dance Base and Tramway. Her teaching methodologies have been significantly influenced by her extensive training with David Zambrano, including Flying Low, Passing Through, Improvisation and more recently Couple Dancing, sharing this work across the UK and beyond. Alongside this her curatorial work and leadership has been instrumental to the development of award winning Hidden Door festival. On Tour With: Mist & Wing / Midnight Painters / Freddie Duck - Leith Depot | Leith Depot

Nov 21–Nov 22, 2024 (UTC+0)
Edinburgh
Arts
Tickets also available on the door at £15, subject to availability. Doors 7pm. Mist & Wing make music that welcomes you in. Think indie-folk with hints of country: “If you mixed Angus & Julia Stone with The Jayhawks and The Chicks, this is what you’d get.” Alan & Grace Murray make up the duo, whose moniker takes inspiration from the Gaelic names for the Isle of Skye. Hailing from the island and growing up with a stammer, Alan found music to be a way of connecting with others that, for him, was easier than speaking. This - and an appreciation for that which goes unseen and unsaid - makes sense of his conversational songs, with catchy choruses that invite you to sing along. Stories that grapple with life that’s sometimes hard, sometimes easy, sometimes fun and sometimes everything but. Add in Grace’s smooth, engaging voice and you have a sound that combines the arresting synchronicity of The Civil Wars, the gentle melancholy of Jackson Browne and the lyrical wit of Jason Isbell. Midnight Painters are a new, Glasgow based duo who specialise in two part harmonies. The members are Scottish guitarist/vocalist Anthony Madden and Irish vocalist Aoibhinn Sweeney. Inspired by artists such as Big Thief, John Martyn and Radiohead. Freddie Duck writes catchy, honest tunes from the heart, processing his emotions through music as his own little personal therapy experiment. The music is equal parts raw, catchy, and emotional, but above all it is hopeful. CDs, artwork and other merch will be on sale at the concert. Follow the artists on socials: @mistandwing @midnightpaintersmusic @freddie__duck All ticket prices include mandatory Eventbrite booking fees. Information Source: Mist & Wing | eventbrite

An Evening with Mik Artistik's Ego Trip | The Wee Red Bar

Edinburgh
Arts
Comedy
Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip are genuinely delightful, funny, frightening, and indefinable. Northern rock and roll stand-up comes close. Every show is unique as Mik finds a new train of thought to ride. He connects, chats, breaks the wall between audience and band, creates chaos, plays air-crook lock (!?), all complimented by exquisite layers of rock, soul, funk, and punk created by Jonny Flockton on electric guitar, drum machine, and one of a number of well-heeled bass players. . The band are regular Glastonbury favourites since their first appearance in 2007. Many fans don’t consider Glastonbury has started until they’ve attended either Mik’s gig on the Wednesday afternoon at the Croissant Neuf Bandstand, or the chaos that reigns at Thursday evening’s Rocket Lounge gig. Both are now Glastonbury traditions for many fans. They have achieved an enviable reputation at many of the major UK festivals, including Latitude, Bearded Theory, Beat Herder, Wilderness, and Beautiful Days. BBC Radio 6Music have long been playing Mik’s music with Gideon Coe, Chris Hawkins, Shaun Keaveny and Tom Robinson all big fans of the band. In early 2020 no-less than rock icon and 6Music presenter Iggy Pop endorsed Mik’s anthem of hope ‘Sweet Leaf of the North’ as his favourite song of the last DECADE! … In his words “… because it’s human, it’s real and it has soul“ Information Source: Mark Kelly | eventbrite
