Peeking In - Art Exhibition at Salon Des Bananes | Salon Des Bananes

About Us We are the folks in that weird building at Carling and Woodroofe. The one with the crazy sign out front with a banana on top, and very strange messages… The building is Rich Loen’s art studio. We’ve been here since 2019, working on a bunch of crazy interesting projects. We like to make stuff that somehow involves computers, algorithms, math, or are just whimsical and fun. We’ve always planned to have a gallery as part of our space. And now, we are finally making that dream come true. Our space is called Salon Des Bananes. We kinda got the idea from Napoleon. The Salon Des Bananes is poised to be Ottawa’s most exciting exhibition space, with a focus on edgy and intriguing art, bringing together artists from various styles into an unconventional space that is both experimental and experiential. (can we use “unconventional” somewhere here?) Our space is different. It’s pretty industrial. And we like that. And it’s a working studio - there may be someone welding, or there may be a CNC machine running off in the distance. We’re actually making cool stuff here! It’s not like any other gallery in town. And now we’re having our first show at Salon Des Bananes! About the Peeking In event ‘Peeking In’ is a special exhibit event that will allow a select group of people to come into the new and exciting Salon Des Bananes exhibition space, which is part of the Loen.Design Studio. This inaugural exhibition event showcases intriguing works by exceptional and visionary guest artists renowned for their mastery of their chosen mediums including Lori Mirabelli, Maciek Kozlowski, and Dave Rheaume, along with a captivating selection of Rich Loen’s’s engaging and playful mixed-media pieces. Visitors can finally 'peek in' and explore this one-of-a-kind studio gallery. We’d really like you to join us for this event. Meet the ArtistsRich Loen Owner and operator of the Salon Des Bananes gallery and the adjoining Loen.Design studio, where he creates all of his large-scale installation works inspired by industrial design, technology, and data. loen.design Lori Mirabelli Lyrical Abstrac Artist, inspired by mid-century modern New York. Collected and represented internationally. lorimirabelli.com Maciek Peter Kozlowski Ottawa based mixed media artist, celebrated for his ability to evoke joy through diverse artistic expressions. A recipient of numerous international awards, including the U.K. Artist of the Year (2017). www.maciekpeter.com Dave Rheaume Award-winning Metis artist, who grew up in Ottawa but now lives and works in Toronto. As a non-Indigenous-led arts organization that presents work by Indigenous artists and other artists of colour, and which benefits from funding from the Canadian government that continues to deprioritize access to clean drinking water for many Indigenous communities, we at Debaser strive to remain mindful of how ongoing colonial processes position us in relation to the artists we support and the work we present. We also acknowledge the building that Debaser and Club SAW are based in, the Arts Court, is the former Ottawa Courthouse, right next to the former Ottawa Jail. While we acknowledge the dark history of these buildings and the oppressive connotations of prisons and courts for Indigenous and Black community members, we also thank Indigenous and Black artists and community members for reclaiming this space and filling it with art and performance that have the potential to transform and educate the community. Learn more about this land acknowledgement and find educational resources and ways to support at www.debaser.ca/land-acknowledgement ACCESSIBILITYClub SAW is a wheelchair accessible spaces. Le français suit ci-dessous Delve into the world of contemporary ballet with Voices Dance Project founder Jasmine van Schouwen. Built on the foundations of classical ballet technique, contemporary ballet uses elements of modern dance to free the dancer from the constraints of the rigorously defined body lines and forms found in traditional, classical ballet. In this 2-hour workshop, participants will be guided through a relaxing barre warmup, followed by simple exercises at the center, and will finish the evening by learning a short contemporary ballet routine. Together, we will explore new movement possibilities and relationships, while keeping things light and fun! ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Jasmine van Schouwen - Dancer, Choreographer, Founder of the Voices Dance Project Jasmine van Schouwen is a dance artist based in Gatineau, on unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe territory, with over 18 years of experience performing in classical ballets and contemporary works. Her choreographic works have appeared in music videos, commercials, and small stages across the city. Jasmine is the founder and Artistic Director of the Voices Dance Project, an interdisciplinary dance collective based in the National Capital Region. She is also currently working as a dancer and choreographer for emerging Outaouais dance company, PenserDanser. Her artistic discipline focuses on classical and modern ballet, floorwork, contemporary dance, and improvised dance. Jasmine is passionate about exploring how different dance styles can come together to deconstruct gender hierarchies and boundaries, and about using dance as a medium for developing deeper understanding of people and their stories. She is currently working on developing approaches and practices to democratize and de-colonize dance and to present it to audiences in unexpected contexts. ABOUT THE VOICES DANCE PROJECT The Voices Dance Project (VDP) is a non-profit dance collective that puts dancers at the center of artistic creation in a collaborative, supportive, and accessible environment. VDP aims to give independent dancers a space to explore choreography and expression. The project enables dancers to workshop new choreographic works, to think critically about existing dance structures and institutions, and to train and perform on stage or in multimedia productions. Through these performances, VDP hopes that artists will be able to develop experience, connect with artists from a variety of backgrounds, and discover new ways of expressing themselves. The project specifically offers a creative space to dancers with experience training and performing in ballet, modern dance, contemporary dance, indigenous dance styles and traditional dance styles from around the world. The project provides dancers of all body types, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, genders and sexual identities a platform for their works to be experienced, unfettered, by audiences in the National Capital Region. Interested in joining the project?
