Book Launch: North of Main | Chapman Cultural Center
Oct 22, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Saint John
Celebrate the publication of North of Main with Hub City Writers Project! Join Hub City Writers Project to celebrate the publication of North of Main: Spartanburg's Historic Black Neighborhoods of North Dean Street, Gas Bottom, and Back of the College.
Residents of each of the neighborhoods featured in the book will be signing copies of the book from 5pm to 6pm. There will be a 30 minute panel with the authors, as well as members of the neighborhoods, moderated by Dr. Glory Boozer. Books will be available for purchase at the event. About the BookNorth of Main: Spartanburg's Historic Black Neighborhoods of North Dean Street, Gas Bottom, and Back of the Collegeis the most in-depth Spartanburg Black history book ever produced, particularly for the years post-emancipation. This beautiful 300-page hardcover book also includes over 150 historic photographs and maps. New neighborhoods began emerging north of Main Street in Spartanburg, South Carolina in the 1870s as emancipated Black men and women spent their hard-won post-slavery wages to purchase lots and build homes. As the decades rolled by, they and their descendants established a string of neighborhoods encompassing hundreds of houses, stretching from modern-day Barnet Park to the edge of Spartanburg Medical Center. North of Main is the story of how this district rose and how it disappeared. In its pages, meet the pioneering Black men and women who lived and worked in these early neighborhoods: clergymen, educators, newsmen, artisans, attorneys, physicians, activists, musicians, caregivers, and more. In the face of frequent oppression, they laid a strong foundation for those who followed them. The history of the place they built is extraordinary in its demonstration of the heroism, courage, determination, and pride of Black citizens of Spartanburg who built dynamic and historically significant neighborhoods in treacherous times. North of Main is a sequel to the classic 2005 Hub City Press book, South of Main. Major sponsors include the City of Spartanburg, the Spartanburg Public Libraries, and Wofford College.

Shakespeare | Old Red Lion Theatre Pub
Jan 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Saint John
Shakespeare is the story of Shakespeare as it has never been told before: in a single play that covers his entire life, from childhood to death. Remarkably (but truly), there has never been a biographical play, or biodrama, that tells the whole story of the greatest playwright who ever lived. Until now… Shakespeare captured the essential truth about humanity, so it is perhaps unsurprising that his own life should resemble one of his plays, or more accurately a series of plays: Comedy, in which he and his fellow players steal a theatre; History, in which they become involved, unwittingly or otherwise, in a plot to overthrow the Queen, Elizabeth I; and, finally, Tragedy, in which he faces a long-overdue reckoning with his past. Shakespeare is a lifetime’s labour of love by playwright Martin Keady; the culmination of more than 30 years of study and research. It has already been performed at The Rose Theatre in London, on the remains of an Elizabethan theatre in which Shakespeare himself performed, and the aim in 2025 is that it will receive both its first full stage production and an audio/podcast recording, ideally in The Rose or another Elizabethan theatre. Freshfest 2025 has a series of play readings and that is completely in keeping with Shakespeare’s world, which was more verbal and auditory than ours; Elizabethans went to hear a play, not see it. Consequently, we hope that you enjoy hearing Shakespeare. For more information, please visit: https://theshakespeareplays.com

She has studied Directing at Toneelacademie Maastricht and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and is based in London. An earlier version of Eigengrau was written as part of her master’s degree.

Put Your Dukes Up | Old Red Lion Theatre Pub
Feb 9, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Saint John
At the heart of this imagined encounter, in 1950, between two titans of historical romance, the meticulous Georgette Heyer and the flamboyant Barbara Cartland, lies an accusation of plagiarism. Where lies the line between creativity and imitation? The setting reflects the stark contrast between the two icons - Heyer’s orderly study, steeped in scholarly research, against Cartland’s lively workspace, brimming with the chaos of dictated novels. From Heyer’s mock fencing sessions with her husband to Cartland’s musings on romance and reincarnation, their opposing personalities come to life, as they seek to find weaknesses in the other’s armour before that deadliest of encounters – afternoon tea with biscuits, When the two meet, polite pleasantries quickly give way to sharp exchanges. Heyer presents a compelling case for plagiarism, pointing out uncanny similarities between their works, down to the exact phrases that define the Regency romance genre. Cartland, ever defiant, defends herself with flamboyant claims and a shrewd understanding of audience desires, until a critical slip forces her into retreat. As the dust settles, both women confront the roles they play in crafting escapist worlds for readers hungry for love and happy endings. Heyer emerges triumphant but conflicted, while Cartland, though bested, remains unapologetic. They both, though, believe that their romances will bring succour to women in a post-war world where traditional roles are under threat. The play, with a mix of drama and comedy, celebrates the enduring allure of romance in a literary showdown - where pens, not swords, decide the victor.

The Mourning After / Cube, Three Walls | Old Red Lion Theatre Pub
Feb 24, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Saint John
DOUBE BILL. The Mourning After written by Mark Brennan An anonymous city. An unnamed era. The Occupation has ended. But before life can return to normal, some scores have to be settled. The Mourning After is a tense, sometimes darkly comic, portrayal of the aftermath of war; and how peace time isn't always everything that it is cracked up to be. Cube, Three Walls written by David Donovan Four friends reunite for a dinner party as chaos and hilarity ensue. Charlie and Peter are doing their best to be the hosts with the most. But Charlie keeps worrying about Peter relapsing while Peter is concerned about any lingering feelings Charlie has for the man of the hour Andrew. The birthday boy and failing poet Andrew is at an impasse in his life and hopes that reuniting with old friends and former flame Sarah will set his life back on track. Sarah wants to reconnect with her old college friends but worries about upsetting Andrew now that she’s moved on with her life. Classic farce dinner party shenanigans unfold as snippets of canned audience laughter and sitcom sound effects can be heard gradually infiltrating the audience as the group starts to become aware of the artificial nature of their world. Cube, Three Walls is an experimental piece of theatre that combines horror, drama, and comedy to turn a conventional premise into a nightmare.
