Exhibition Opening and Event ~ Threads | Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery - Gasworks Arts Park
Nov 23, 2024 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
Come and experience Threads—an immersive group art and theatrical exhibition that brings together art, performance, and creative exploration. Featuring the work of three distinct Melbourne-based artists—Mia Rappel, Madhu Henry, and Eamon (Jungle) Wyss—this event weaves together diverse artistic mediums to explore personal and collective connections to the landscape, seasonal rhythms, and elemental forces.
Mia Rappel is a visual artist whose work explores the intersection of nature and the human form through evocative collages, sculptural installations, and digital storytelling. In Threads, Mia unveils a series of textile wall pieces and cyanotype collages, crafted from found and foraged materials, creating folds, patterns, and dialogue between colours and textures. Her work will be shown in the group exhibition, followed by an interactive art performance that invites visitors to actively engage with the experience. Eamon Wyss brings a unique vision as a fine art drone photographer, capturing the natural landscapes of Australian salt lakes and transforming them into abstract compositions. Without altering the original colour or form, his works toy with our imagination while evoking an authentic, unfiltered connection to the land. These stunning visuals are printed on silk scarves, showcased in the exhibition and featured in a wearable art catwalk. Madhu Henry is a movement and visual artist, exploring the mystical connection between the human body as a living landscape and the relationship with nature's seasonal patterns and cycles of life. Madhu uses photography to encapsulate specific feelings emanated through natures unique forms. Then layered to create multi-dimensional images evoking a new depth and relationship with our internal and external landscapes. Madhu’s selected pieces will be part of the Threads group exhibition, followed by a live ritual movement performance exploring this intimate relationship. Threadsoffers an immersive journey where art, nature, and performance converge. Each artwork and performance in Threads offers a unique perspective, inviting viewers to explore the deep connections that bind us in the fabric of the natural world. Whether through the lens of photography, the tactile expression of collage, or the fluidity of movement, this exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the shared rhythms between human life and the environment, fostering a sense of unity and reverence for the world around us. FULL EXHIBITION:
19th Nov - 10th Dec, 2024 ~ Opening hours: Daily 10 am - 4 pm OPENING EVENT:
Saturday, 23 September, 1pm, Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery, Gasworks Arts Park, 21 Graham St, Albert Park, Melbourne. Come and join us for a Summer afternoon at Gasworks, view our nature inspired group art show Threads in the ARB gallery, with a resfreshment from the fabuolous cafe. Amble through the lush grounds to our garden studio where we will delve into a soundscape with ritual performance Elements , a wearable art catwalk Salt Lakes in Silk and a sculptural installation BLUE . Kick back on the upcycled denim beanbag, thread some glass beads and take in the surronds. A new tactile kids playground and the gasworks gardens are yours to enjoy into the afternoon. We look forward to sharing a dynamic and playful afternoon with you !
'Elements' ~ Madhu invites you into a sensory-rich environment where natural textures, patterns, and soundscapes come alive to represent the cycles and seasons of nature. Her installations blend visual and auditory elements with her own movement and voice, embodying the rhythms and transitions of the natural world. Through this immersive experience, Madhu explores themes of life, death, and the spaces in between, highlighting the deep connection between the human body and nature.
'Salt Lakes in Silk' ~ Visitors are invited to step into a world that reflects the serenity of Victoria's salt lakes, where a playful catwalk of wearable art showcases the ephemeral beauty of these landscapes, reimagined in the luxurious form of silk scarves. Each scarf tells a unique story of natural wonder, elegantly draped and styled in a fashion show, displaying the versatile and vibrant ways these exquisite pieces can be worn. This unique collection bridges the gap between art and everyday life, allowing the wearer to carry the magnificence of nature with them, transforming their wardrobe into a walking art gallery. 'BLUE ' ~ Is a welcoming vision, as the visitor steps into the space feeling immersed in the calming tones of blue. Soft textures surround to see and touch, a tapestry of tones, a patchwork, a coming together of disparate elements creating a new whole. Mia has been collating Blue fabrics from her community ready to up cycle: Denim Jeans, Linen, Cotton work shirts, Jersey, Silk, Saris. These are then deconstructed and reformed into a series of textural, shape filled patchworks. Within the space is a large patchwork covered double beanbag, showcasing the up cycled materials. The beanbag is accompanied by two cube stools also covered in patchwork. In the middle of this ‘sitting space’ is s large enamel tray filled with beads and objects and twine/ threads. Visitors will be invited to contribute to the installation by doing some beading / threading while taking in the installation. This is a space to sit and enjoy the lovely view of the gasworks gardens, a place to participate in the simple ancient act of beading, a moment to engage in the small gestures that add to the whole. Here in this simplicity we can reflect on the power and impact of reusing and recreating from what we have and what we can share with one another. Here we reclaim space for community to engage, to create, to reflect and to contribute. Eamon Wyss
Insta: @eamonwyss Eamon Wyss is a fine art drone photographer based in Melbourne, Australia, with a strong fascination for the ephemeral nature of Australian salt lakes. He has developed a distinct creative style, in which he transforms natural landscapes into abstract imagery without manipulating his photographs from their original colour and form. Instead he pays meticulous attention to detail while composing his works from the air, seeking out what he describes as ‘contemporary dreaming stories’ formed naturally in the shapes and colours of salt lakes. For the Threads exhibition, Eamon’s unique photographs, with their intricate patterns and vivid hues, are digitally printed on high-quality silk. The result is a collection of scarves that are not only fashion accessories but also individual art pieces, each telling a unique story of natural wonder and artistic innovation.
Mia Rappel
Insta: @miarappel Mia Rappel, is a practicing visual artist working primarily in collage, sculptural installation and digital storytelling, her work aims to articulate through form, movement, texture and colour. Mia is passionate about investigating the intersection points of nature and the human form, the merging of the inner and outer realms of our daily life. In the Threads exhibition, Mia presents a series of textile sculptures and cyanotype collages. Her inspiration points begin with immersion in nature, absorbing the colours and textures, walking and allowing the land to sink in. For her sculpture Mia collates found, foraged and up-cycled fabrics and for the cyanotype collages: objects and ephemera, drawing on her years long collection and gathering new treasures as she comes across them. Using hand cutting and assemblage she works these materials together, creating folds and patterns, dialogue between colours and textures. Slowly and steadily following the threads, forming these elements into dynamic collages. Madhu Henry
Insta: @madhu_honey_artist Madhu Henry is a Movement and Visual artist who explores the intricate relationship between the human body and the natural world. Her work transforms this relationship into a dynamic, living landscape that responds to the cycles and seasons of nature. By drawing inspiration directly from the raw materials of nature, Madhu infuses her art with elements that echo the rhythms and textures of the environment. In her creative process, she intertwines movement with raw visual elements to manifest a continuous dialogue between body and nature. Her body of work often highlights the elemental forces of human expression and ritual, making the natural world a collaborator in her artistic vision. Through this interplay, Madhu’s work brings to life the profound connection between the human experience and the environment, portraying them as a unified, ever-evolving landscape

The team was founded in 2009 and entered the Australian Football League (AFL) as the 17th team in 2011. Despite being a relatively young team, the Suns have shown steady improvement over the years, with their best season being in 2014 where they finished in 12th place. The team is known for its fast-paced, attacking style of play and has a strong group of talented players, including two-time club champion Tom Lynch and young gun Jack Lukosius. The Suns play their home games at Metricon Stadium, which has a capacity of over 25,000 and provides a lively atmosphere for fans. In addition to their AFL Women's3 competitions, the Suns also have a women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW) competition, which was formed in 2020. Overall, the Gold Coast Suns are a promising and exciting team to watch in the AFL Women's3.
