Modernist Faces: On Marcel Proust’s Facial Style | William Mcmahon Ball Theatre, Old Arts Building, Parkville
Nov 27, 2024 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
Fascinated with end-of-the-century physiognomy, Marcel Proust collected photographs of faces throughout his life. In turn, his writing grappled with what he took to be the dilemma of the face. In this lecture, Anca traces the development of the character of Odette in Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, who is endowed with a “new, personal style of face .” The text describes a process of facialization as a mode of self-invention, akin to what Mina Loy, in another modernist experiment with the face, calls “auto-facial-construction.” Thus reinvented, Odette is the only character in the novel who does not age. Time, memory, and face form a modernist conceptual constellation. If, in Walter Benjamin’s reading of Proust, the face functions as a “handle of memory,” Anca argues that the paradigmatic object of memory retrieval for Proust is the face. The Keynote is delivered as part of Figurements: A Symposium on Literature and the Face. About the speakerAnca Parvulescu is the author of three books: Laughter: Notes on a Passion (MIT Press, 2010); The Traffic in Women’s Work: East European Migration and the Making of Europe (University of Chicago Press, 2014); and, with Manuela Boatcă, Creolizing the Modern: Transylvania across Empires (Cornell University Press, 2022). Parvulescu’s articles have been published in PMLA, New Literary History, Critical Inquiry, Literature Compass, Interventions, Camera Obscura. Her work has been funded by the ACLS, the Huntington Library, the American Councils for International Education, the McDonnell Academy, and the Center for the Humanities at Washington University in St Louis. She has received the Outstanding Mentor Award and the Miriam Bailin Prize for Teaching.Parvulescu is currently at work on two book projects: Modernist Faces: Physiognomy and Facial Form argues that contemporary technologies of facial recognition embed a form of the face inherited from physiognomy, which was both reproduced and challenged by modernist authors. An article from this project, “The Biography of a Face: Virginia Woolf’s Orlando,” appeared in Journal of Modern Literature. EnquiriesPlease send your enquiries via figurementssymposium@gmail.com. FrankTALK with Leah Kaminsky | Frankston Library
Nov 28, 2024 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
Join us for a FrankTALK with poet Leah Kaminsy, in celebration of the release of Disorders of the Blood.
In Disorders of the Blood, Leah Kaminsky uses blood as a visceral and evocative metaphor to represent the myriad of human experiences. From the beginning of life to the final hours of death – and all the moments of beauty, fragility and wonder in between – each poem takes the reader on an evocative journey through the tapestry of human existence.
Disorders of the Blood is a profoundly beautiful exploration of our own mortality. And of Mother Earth’s despair. Kaminsky hones her physician’s gaze with scalpel-like precision and probes the secrets at the very heart of our body and soul. By lowering her doctor’s mask, she foregrounds torment as well as resilience, creating a powerful and graceful elegy to both the living and the dead.

Nov 28, 2024 (UTC+10)ENDED
Vic
With appeal to more than just punk history obsessives, Orstralia offers an unprecedented snapshot of an underacknowledged segment of Australian life and history. Orstralia represents the first definitive account of Australian punk's initial years, from progenitors the Saints and Radio Birdman in the mid-70s, through the emergence of hardcore in the 1980s, to the stylistic diffusion that accompanied transition to the 1990s. Based on over 130 interviews, Orstralia documents the most renowned to the most fleeting and obscure acts the nation produced. Included are equally engrossing and shocking personal narratives befitting such a passionate and intemperate cultural form, as well as punk's placement within broader Australian society at the time. Tristan Clark is a Melbourne-based educator, musician, and writer. His involvement in punk has spanned over three decades and encompassed a near gamut of roles: band member, roadie, merch person, show organizer, Food Not Bombs volunteer, community radio DJ, as well as having written sporadically for local zines and other publications
