Jazz’s first poetry collection, the bestselling how to make a basket (UQP, 2021), won the 2020 David Unaipon Award. Their second collection is mark the dawn, which was the recipient of the 2024 UQP Quentin Bryce Award. Anne-Marie Te Whiu (Ani) is an Australian-born Māori who belongs to the Te Rarawa iwi in Hokianga, Aotearoa NZ. She lives on unceded Gadigal and Wangal land. She is a cultural producer, writer, editor and weaver. Her poems, essays and non-fiction pieces have been published broadly across Australia and Aotearoa NZ. Inspired by Rozsika Parker’s classic book The Subversive Stitch(1984), which redefined embroidery as a powerful feminist art form, this discussion will provide insights into how textiles have evolved from traditional crafts into dynamic expressions of social resistance.
