Light in Winter: Tzepl (Seattle) | Or Shalom
Feb 1, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Vancouver
Tzepl weaves together the accordion of Laurie Andres, the trombone and tuba of Jimmy Austin, and the violin of Mae Kessler into a musical braid, simultaneously harmonious and quarrelsome. They play klezmer in a mostly traditional style, but not strictly so. Their sound combines elements of nineteenth century European string players with the brassy American style of the early twentieth century, with the accordion bridging the gap. Tzepl’s music is just as pleasant for listening as it is invigorating for dancing. Laurie, Jimmy, and Mae first began playing together in the spring of 2023 after being invited to present this music at a workshop for youth, organized by Seattle Fiddlesticks and The Rhapsody Project. Laurie Andres plays klezmer, New England folk music, and many other kinds of traditional music. He also performs in the klezmer duo, Kesselgarden, and is a highly regarded performer for contradancing. Mae Kessler has played in original and traditional music groups for many years and developed a deep love for klezmer music after attending KlezKamp in the Catskills in 2012. Mae also plays with the Scandinavian and klezmer duo, Varda. Jimmy Austin inherited his first name and first trombone from his grandfather. He also performs in a variety of situations, including the klezmer band Shpilkis, and directs The Rhapsody Project’s Yiddish Music and Heritage programming.

Honeybear, Ivan Hartle and Just A Season at the Fox Cabaret | Fox Cabaret
Feb 5, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Vancouver
Honeybear, the Band is celebrating the relase of their brand new EP. They are lucky enough to be joined by Vancouver legends Ivan Hartle and Just A Season. If we weren't already performing, we would definitely be going to this show! Just A Season (Vancouver, BC) www.justaseason.caScott Smith has helped make a lot of other people sound great over the years. From the heartland roots-rock of Barney Bentall and the arena sized country of Aaron Pritchett to a slew of insurgent Vancouver club champs like Rich Hope, Ben Arsenault and Marin Patenaude, Smith has been everybody’s ringer, flipping between guitar and pedal steel while casually raising the bar with lightning technique and unfailing good taste. With his band Just A Season, Scott Smith switches from sideman to frontman, enlisting some of his favorite players to put the right groove on a collection of songs that recall an era when folk, rock, and country met in a sun-baked embrace. Ivan Hartle (Vancouver, BC) www.ivanhartlemusic.comBorn and raised in Vancouver, B.C., Ivan Hartle is a musician who molds a vintage sonic aesthetic with modern elements. Pivoting from a successful US college baseball career into music, he’s been featured as a popular and emerging artist by DailyHive Canada. His bluesy, soul singer-songwriter stylings are drawn from the classic sounds of Sam Cooke and Donny Hathaway, to new age artists like Son Little, John Mayer, Amos Lee, and Leon Bridges. Ivan’s memorable live act is flush with melodic grooves and strong, soulful vocals. Ivan's received considerable radio airplay on CBC, including the Q with Tom Power and Afterdark programs, as well as the Netherlands' national NPO Radio 2. His catalogue has over 3.5 million streams on Spotify (1.2 mil for ‘Feelin’ Like’, 675k for 'Remedy', 530k for ‘Love in the Lead’), including various editorial placements (Blues Roots, Retro Soul, Mellow Morning + more). Ivan's album ‘A Place to Stay’ (Dec. 15th, 2023) has been met with much praise, including a feature in Clash Magazine for the standout single ‘Love in the Lead.’ He followed up his successful album release with the timeless summer groove 'So Am I.' With media coverage from the likes of the aforementioned DailyHive, Global News Canada, The Province (B.C.), and Notion, Ivan's poised for continued success in 2025. Honeybear, the Band (Vancouver BC) honeybear.bandHoneybear is retro soul, blues and roots quartet from Vancouver BC. Music blog B-Side guys describe their music as if ... The Teskey Brothers decided to collaborate with the ghost of Muddy Waters, with Jesse Roper acting as the spectral medium While Honeybear is a relatively new band formed in 2023, the 4 band members are old friends and have been playing together in other formations for over a decade, crossing paths on tours across Canada, down the West Coast, and beyond. When the pandemic struck and live music was at a standstill, the 4 friends found themselves jamming outdoors in parks, with amps and PA's hooked up to jerry rigged motorcycle batteries, just to bask in the joy that is playing live music with like minded souls. Necessity is the mother of invention, etc. The rest is history. In their short time as a band, Honeybear has already managed to rack of considerable listens on Spotify, with close to a million streams for their debut singles, and has had numerous festival appearances such as Victoria's Rifflandia and others. Honeybear is:
Ian Beaty – Vocals/Bass
Colin Brumelle – Guitar
Mike Kenney – Keyboards
Tim Watson – Drums Fun fact: Keyboard player Mike Kenney has the distinction of playing more sold out shows at Rogers Arena than any other musician – as the organ player for the Vancouver Canucks!

Now Vancouver's psychelelic rockers Black Mountain teach us that you don’t have to be afraid of the past to move bravely into the future. www.blackmountainarmy.com Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter (appearing as a trio)Jesse Sykes And The Sweet Hereafter, is the result of an enduring musical alchemy between singer-songwriter Jesse Sykes and guitarist Phil Wandscher, which began in Seattle, Washington in 2001. Blending folk, blues, country, orchestral pop, and various psychedelic stylings, their sound culminates in what Jon Pareles from the New York Times once described as, “spellbound music, rapt in fatalism and sorrow.” Known for her dusky, otherworldly vocals and lyrics that touch on the metaphysical, All Music added; whether the sonic setting is one of doomy distortion or fragile finger picking, Sykes remains a truly unique vocalist whose dusky voice is capable of imparting a transcendent, almost spiritual quality to almost any tune it touches. This special show with old friends Black Mountain, reunites the two bands, who have toured together in the US and shared stages in both Canada and Europe. In recent times Sykes and Wandscher often appear as a duo, or are joined onstage with bassist Bill Herzog, an original Sweet Hereafter member (and decade long member of seminal Northwest legends, Earth.)
The trio recently returned from Europe where they had the honor of supporting avant-garde doom purveyors Sunn O))), who Sykes, Herzog and Wandscher are also known for collaborating and performing with. They are presently preparing the release of their 5th record, after a very long recording hiatus, and are thrilled to be back in Canada for this special night of music. jessesykes.com DaggerIt’s blue jeans, it’s leather jackets, it’s pointy boots, it’s the New Wave Of British Columbian Heavy Metal… it’s DAGGER. www.instagram.com/dagger_666_ RSVP on FacebookRefund PolicyNo refunds, unless event is cancelled.
