If you are looking for activities for your kids to get involved in this October school holidays, this is a fantastic opportunity for them to safely explore the mōana/ocean, develop in-water confidence and learn about te taiao/environment, especially our coastlines. This day will be focused on estuaries! We are able to offer a full day of activities for 12 kids aged 7-14. The day will involve 1 snorkel, wetland discovery, learning ways to record data either: visual habitat assesment, muddyshore marine meter squarded survey or ecological surveys and marine/estuarine themed games. All activities are weather dependant, and locations/activities may change due to conditions. EMR will make the best judgment on the day due to sea conditions on which locations/activities will be used. In the event of unsuitable weather the event will be cancelled. You will be given 24 hours notice of any cancelations and full refund if EMR cancels. These events have been subsidised thanks to the Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation. An opportunity to learn about the curation of a diverse range of artworks from the University of Auckland Art Collection in Te Tumu Herenga, the University's General Library. Guided by University Art Collection Advisor Madeleine Gifford, the focus of this free one-hour tour will focus on the role that both historic and contemporary artworks play in creating a welcoming environment for learning and research. Artworks included are by celebrated Aotearoa artists like Selwyn Muru and Colin McCahon, alongside a commissioned soundscape and more recent acquisitions by contemporary practitioners such as Areez Katki and Ayesha Green. Join artists Dayle Palfreyman and August Ward in conversation with Kaiāwhina Whakaaturanga Assistant Curator Robbie Handcock about their work in our current exhibition Permissions. This location is accessible. BIOGRAPHIES Dayle Palfreyman moved to Tāmaki Makaura from Te Whanganui-a-Tara in recent years, and works across sculpture, installation and video. Dayle’s sculptural practice has primarily used metal, concrete, wood and beeswax to create environments that explore the edges of bodily autonomy through the tensions between the industrial and natural materials employed. Dayle graduated from Massey University in 2020 with a BFA (Hons) and has had exhibitions at play_station in 2020, City Gallery Wellington in 2022, at Enjoy Contemporary Art Space in 2022 and 2023, and the Physics Room in 2024. August Ward grew up in Tāmaki Makaurau and completed her MFA from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 2023. August’s painting practice is concerned with the visual markers of affluence and aspirational consumerism, in particular the emblems of fashion, beauty, interior design and reality TV. Working in oil and graphite, these symbols become pictorial playthings for colour, composition, and surface. He is co-founder and director of Proyectos Ultravioleta, a multivalent hybrid space/gallery for contemporary art, and is co-founder / co-director of NuMu-Guatemala's only contemporary art museum. Salma Tuqan is a Palestinian contemporary art and design curator and cultural strategist. She is Director of Nottingham Contemporary, a leading centre of contemporary art in the UK. Prior to this she has been Deputy Director of Delfina Foundation and the Contemporary Middle East Curator at the V&A.
