Canadabkeh was founded by Haytham and Zaid Alhamaydeh, two Palestinian brothers from Nablus. When they arrived in Vancouver, they found that dabke culture was not active here and so they decided “to look for passionate individuals who would share and pursue the vision of bringing joy to the community through zaffe chants and loud dabke footwork.” The group is “passionate about spreading the Arabic culture and connecting people.” Dabke is an ancient but still popular folk dance rooted in many of the cultures of the Levant region of the Middle East including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Palestine. UNESCO describes dabke as “a means of expressing cultural identity, celebrating family occasions and increasing social ties.” For Palestinians in particular, it embodies a spirit of community, resilience, and cultural pride. About the Books: impact statement:A revolutionary call to arms wherein the arms are love, art, self-definition, and community care as an alternative to so-called care under carceral capitalism. https://storestock.massybooks.com/item/LsYOQ1babcz2pya2PT2n8w Borrowing and disrupting the forms of patient records, psychiatric assessments, and court documents, Jody Chan's impact statement traces a history of psychiatric institutions within a settler colonial state. These poems bring the reader into the present moment of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, capitalism and money models of madness, and wellness checks. Forming a ghost chorus, they sing an impact statement on migration and intergenerational trauma, gentrification, and police neglect of racialized violence against queer communities in Toronto--and how the wrong kinds of desire, be it across class, race, or gender lines, or towards other worlds, are often punished or disappeared. And yet, these poems also make space for what can take root, despite the impacts--care teams, collective grief rituals, dinners around a table with too many friends to fit. impact statement imagines, and re-imagines, and re-imagines again, a queer, disabled, abolitionist revolution towards our communal flourishing. echolalia echolalia https://storestock.massybooks.com/item/LsYOQ1babcwZ239vJPzINQ In Jane Shi's echolalia echolalia, commitment and comedy work together to critique ongoing inequities, dehumanizing ideologies, and the body politic. Here are playful and transformative narratives of friendship and estrangement, survival and self-forgiveness. Writing against inherited violence and scarcity-producing colonial projects, Shi expresses a deep belief in one's chosen family, love and justice. Shi extends her poetics in all directions with silky skill. Language flourishes in the realm of a poet like this. - T. Liem, author of Slows: Twice and Obits. Western Front is pleased to present a performance by Phew as part of her Canadian tour. Phew’s distinctive voice and spoken-word-like singing style have resounded in international underground music scenes over the last four decades. Starting from fronting the legendary punk band Aunt Sally in Osaka, she steadily released a series of solo albums with prominent collaborators such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, the former Can members Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit. After the 2011 earthquake and nuclear disaster in Japan, she opened a new chapter by channeling the power of analogue synthesized sounds and the human voice. This solo performance showcases her recent compositions and improvisations. To open the evening, Vancouver Island-based Piu will present her expansive soundscapes with hard-hitting synth riffs, raga-inspired vocals, and global rhythms. A lifelong student of Indian classical music, Piu draws from the emotive forces of minimalism and the frontiers of modern electronic sounds. Her work blends genres, cultures, and identities—a reflection of how she moves in the world. Phew’s Canadian tour also includes performances at Arts in the Margins/Flux Festival, Montréal; Debaser, Ottawa; The Music Gallery, Toronto; send + receive festival, Winnipeg; and strangewaves festival, Hamilton. Curated by Aki Onda. About the ArtistsPhew, otherwise known as Hiromi Mortani, is a musician based in Kanagawa, Japan. While fronting Aunt Sally, one of Osaka’s earliest punk groups, Phew played a critical role in developing Japan’s underground music scene. Phew’s oeuvre spans a vast array of experimental sounds: from no-wavey synth-hymns; to poppy, shoegazing, industrial undertones; to eerie incandescent drones. Since the 1970s, Phew’s dynamic, compelling voice and her commitment to unfettered experimentation has been critical in shaping the sound of avant-garde music both in Japan and internationally. Piu is a vocalist, composer, and producer based out of Vancouver Island, Canada. Adorning expansive soundscapes with hard hitting synth riffs, raga-inspired vocals, and global rhythms, Piu’s work involves a fusion of organic and synthetic sounds that invites deep emotional engagement. With seven singles released since 2021 and a debut album on the horizon, Piu is an active participant in the musical and experimental sound communities across British Columbia and has collaborations with musicians worldwide. AccessibilityThe Grand Luxe Hall is located on the second floor of Western Front, which is accessed by a flight of 26 stairs.
