Join us for a storytime with children's author Karen J Young as she reads from her second book The Girl with the Magic Ponytails French Tales! ABOUT THE GIRL WITH THE MAGIC PONYTAILS FRENCH TALES! An afternoon Parisian-inspired tea party in her grandparents’ garden soon gives way to a surprising and thrilling journey to France. Who else but Riley can soar on a giant sunflower, cozy up in a gargantuan croissant or fashion a space age vehicle out of macarons? With a flip and a twirl, a swoosh and a curl, Riley and her canine pal Pup zoom through time and space to visit with Monet and Van Gogh, compete in the Grand Prix, dance in the French Alps and savor treats in Paris with unexpected visitors. A story about sweet memories, old and new, and the magic we make along the way. ABOUT KAREN J YOUNG Karen Young is a Los Angeles-based writer and editor specializing in food, tourism, and human interest stories. Do you want to know where to find the best grilled cheese in the world? Just ask! A graduate of the University of California Berkeley, Karen's career has transversed through the worlds of journalism and entertainment as a newspaper and magazine editor, website founder, book editor and more. Karen is the mother of two grown children, Adam and Rachel, who often chide her for having a bad case of 'FOMO.' Among her favorite things: travel and urban walks, outdoor concerts, live theater, movies, bookshops, visiting open-air markets wherever she travels, shaggy dogs and panda bears. She can't imagine her world without cheese, tomatoes, ice cream, blueberries...and laughter. Her secret desire is to be a private investigator. The Girl with the Magic Ponytails French Tales is her second book, and the follow up to The Girl with the Magic Ponytails (October 6, 2020). Information Source: Sunny's Bookshop | eventbrite

Arts
Join artists Terrick Gutierrez & Jazmin Urrea on Saturday, September 14th from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM as they unveil their public art installations addressing food justice and community health at MudTown Farms! DATE Saturday, September 14, 2024 TIME 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Opening Reception 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: Panel discussion ARTISTS & PUBLIC ART INSTALLATIONS Artist: Terrick Gutierrez Public Art Installation: Why is There A Liquor Store on Almost Every Corner? Why Is There A Liquor Store on Almost Every Corner? is a six-foot-high sign addressing issues including food insecurity and discriminatory zoning. Inspired by the artist's experience in South Central LA, where liquor stores were prevalent but healthy food options scarce, the sign questions this disparity. It resembles a traditional liquor store sign but asks a critical question. The back features a map of South Central, heatmap of liquor stores, and an image of a local store, with interactive sliding panels. Artist: Jazmín Urrea Public Art Installation: El Barrilito de Fuego Jazmín Urrea addresses the lack of access to fresh food and health risks from artificial dyes like Red 40 and Yellow 6 in communities with limited resources. In her hometown of Watts, she will highlight these issues with an installation at MudTown Farms. In September, Urea and MudTown Farms will unveil the installation and co-host a snack workshop for local children alongside a chef. This initiative aims to empower and educate youth about food equity, fostering awareness and sustainable change. Jazmín Urrea and Terrick Gutierrez were commissioned through the Public Artists in Development (PAiD) program and are members of the PAiD Artist Council. PAiD is a Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture program funded by the Mellon Foundation with support in development and delivery by Dyson & Womack. PAiD is designed to advance the career growth and economic empowerment of underrepresented artists in LA County through mentorship, professional development, breaking down barriers to inclusion, and engaging diverse artists as advisors to changing institutional practices. Helen Lundeberg: Inner/Outer Space Opening Reception | Louis Stern Fine Arts

Sep 14, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
Arts
Fine Art
Throughout a career spanning six decades, Los Angeles-based artist Helen Lundeberg (1908-1999) held an enduring fascination with the structures and patterns underpinning the natural world and the universe beyond it. From her early scientific illustrations of flowers, seeds, and human embryos to the highly abstracted mountains, planets, and waterways she painted in her later career, Lundeberg’s work traces a unifying structural organization across terrestrial and cosmic orders of magnitude. Relying as much on calculated formal composition as on the subjective engagement of the viewer, Lundeberg’s work straddles the permeable borders between observation and memory, perception and imagination, and physical and psychological space. Louis Stern Fine Arts is part of PST ART as a Gallery Program Participant. Returning in September 2024 with its latest edition, PST ART: Art & Science Collide, this landmark regional event explores the intersections of art and science, both past and present. PST ART is presented by Getty. For more information about PST ART: Art & Science Collide, please visit pst.art. Information Source: Louis Stern Fine Arts | eventbrite
