Kang Junseok - MELANGE | Seoul

Oct 17–Nov 16, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Seoul
Exhibitions
Loved by the public for reminiscent of a haven in the busy daily life, Kang Joon-seok harmoniously expresses his memories and the utopia he dreams of through the scenery of Jeju and the creatures that wander in the vast nature. This exhibition features 32 new works that reflect a collection of memory fragments that are like afterimages mixed with various colors, containing warm moments and promises that we will not forget all the moments we encounter in the future. Kang Joon-seok realized the limitations of tiny humans in nature and the weaknesses he felt in the vast nature, and began to create works using vast lands, abandoned swimming pools, and amusement parks as backgrounds. The main location of the works is Jeju Island, where the artist actually lives, and all the scenery depicted helps us escape from complex thoughts and reflect on stability and leisure. The personal space you live in, such as your home or the community you live in, always exists. For modern people who live a busy life every day, it is the perfect space to rest and escape. This secret space where nothing disturbs me is my best place, the only place that understands me the most and embraces me. In addition, the simple and comfortable backgrounds in Kang Joon-seok's works, which are not easy to feel the perspective, maximize psychological stability. These elements play an important role in helping viewers discover themselves in the works, find inner peace, and fully face their emotions. This solo exhibition "Melange" exhibits new works that project the complex inner self by mixing various floating thoughts and emotions. Starting with strong colors similar to raw emotions, Jiang Junshi found and presented the appropriate emotional range through the process of layering and building colors. In this exhibition, we hope to boldly express the two inner conflicts of wanting to maintain the present and longing for change through a sense of layering that does not rely on a specific shape or appearance. In addition, he uses memory and experience as the great roots of his works, and blooms into various forms through various imaginations. Through this new work, I want to collect some memories of vague topics and re-examine the mixture of different color memories. In this exhibition, Jiang Junshi honestly captures the thoughts and emotions of the scene at the moment, redefines the theme in his own way, and unfolds the landscape where memory and imagination blend. You can feel the artist's new look and deeper feelings. Diverse emotions, enjoy the work, and hope that this can be a moment to recall the precious memories we missed.

In the fast-paced modern society, personal life and leisure are more precious than ever. The breadwinners of the family who are busy with work are gradually alienated from their families, and the work messages that keep popping up on their mobile phones disrupt our rhythm of life. Under the pressure of responsibility, the weekend rest time that originally belonged to us often has to give way. The highly competitive social environment makes us unconsciously compare ourselves with others and ourselves, and measure ourselves by external standards. In this fast-paced urban life, having a period of rest time that belongs to us is becoming more and more precious, which is our pursuit of a more humane life. I also work hard on days without weekends. Occasionally when I go out, I always find that summer has already turned into winter, and winter has quietly turned into spring. The passing of time has gradually made me accustomed to it. In such a life, I release the energy that seems to be about to burst by riding a bicycle and skateboarding, and after clearing my mind, I return to work with a clearer mind. My work is based on the bits and pieces I have experienced in this rhythm of life, as well as the records of memories and residual impressions in my heart. When I see the lights of the city, I can't help but think of the crowd. The personality and vitality of the city come from people, and the little actions of people inject vitality into the streets. From the city with tall buildings and constant traffic, to the brownstone buildings with small trees and steps, and the park in the quiet evening, these are part of my daily life. This work incorporates the people I met in the city of New York, the exchanges with various cultures, and the emotions and personal moments I experienced in the changing environment. Standing in front of the blank canvas, I often think back to the moments that made me calm and the impressions left at that time. In the work, the lines and dots with strong rhythm, the traces of movement, the rough texture and the seemingly perfect but slightly incomplete elements are all intertwined. This exhibition explores the busy daily life of the city in depth, showing the unique impression left in the memory of the city through the close footsteps, neighborhood interactions and communication between people. In a busy day, temporarily put down the burden of emotions, these moments of leisure and communication are the source of making our lives more fulfilling and rich. Artist Yin Xie continues to reflect on the lives of modern people by recording the emotional impressions of individuals when the inner and outer worlds meet in the rapid changes of modern society. The sense of speed brought by urban changes, the energy that is condensed and released in an instant, and the emotions and imperfections that naturally flow out in the process are all key elements to understanding his works. His creations capture the energy of the city, freeze the moment of time and its preciousness, and advocate emotional resonance between people. The minimalist dots and lines, as well as the carefully blended colors of the artist, are a restrained way for him to perceive and interpret the energy of the current city and society through the light, sound and people's movements of the city. Through this unique way of expression, the artist not only perceives the space he is in, but also realizes his existence in it, and records the rich emotions and wonderful impressions generated at this moment. When you look closely at those seemingly perfect dots and lines, you often find that there is a certain imperfect "human" quality hidden in them. This difference between visual illusion and reality inspires a unique sense of beauty, prompting the viewer to focus on his own sensory experience. When aware of this difference, the audience will begin to be aware of their own existence and experience their own sensory feelings in the present time and space. This method is very similar to the artist's cognition of reality and existence. The impression projected on the canvas cannot fully restore the scene at that time. The gaps between dots and lines are what turn dots and lines on the canvas into beautiful light, rhythm and energy, carrying our stories and making the space of memory and emotion more moving. In this modern society where everything seems to be oversaturated, the process of pursuing inner freedom and tranquility gives new meaning to life and also opens up a space of one's own in the heart. Like a letter to the audience of "Next Scene: Coexistence", I hope that this exhibition can bring them a journey of enriching their souls and lives when they meet Yin Xie's works in the busy rhythm of life.

People, living things will die. Death covers the faces of those who survived the eternal years. So I always feel strange about death. Death is the beginning of a journey to an unknown place. Facing death, the living are heartbroken, That journey cannot be taken together. You can only provide a companion for those who are leaving. The only friend on that road with no solution is. Just like the midwife accepted me and my parents guided me when I was born The moment this life ends and the underworld begins to breathe, the existence that accepts me and guides me, has prepared an exhibition introducing "puppets". The ancestors used the word "passing away" to describe it. This means that the place we go after death is ultimately where we came from. With various puppets on the journey of our souls returning home and the traditional worldview of Koreans now transformed into a beautiful cultural heritage display material I hope it will be a time to think about life and death

Handcrafted palette | Seoul

Oct 31, 2024–May 2, 2025 (UTC+9)ENDED
Seoul
Exhibitions
As you walk around the Seoul Museum of Craft, you will come across a variety of craft works. Just as each form was created to suit its use, the colors were not created by chance. The colors of each work reflect the artist’s thoughts and feelings. Artists devote themselves to research to find the most unique colors and repeat experiments to apply the desired colors to their works. No color is simple and can never be easily expressed. This exhibition is a record of the process in which craftsmen create their own colors, and a story about the time and dedication they put into it. The archive materials, including research notes on colors, poems, materials, and tools, are like looking at a palette filled with the unique colors that the artists wanted to express through their works. The three craftsmen in different fields, Noh Kyung-jo in ceramics, Lee Byeong-chan in dyeing, and Kim Heon-cheol in glass, all obtain colors from nature. Baking colors from the earth, dyeing colors from plants, and making colors shine more colorfully with light transmitted through glass. Creating colors is another way that craftsmen relate to nature. The colors they create enrich our daily lives and stimulate our senses. And these colors will meet you and create another relationship. I hope you will rediscover the colorful colors you witnessed in this exhibition and treasure them in your hearts. ※ The Craft Archives exhibition is only open on weekdays (Tuesday to Friday). Please take note when viewing.

Nari Ward:ongoin’ | Lehmann Maupin

Seoul
Exhibitions
Lehmann Maupin is pleased to present “ongoin’,” a solo exhibition of new work by Nari Ward, in Seoul, from August 28 to October 19, 2024. This is Ward’s second exhibition in Seoul and features works on copper, sculpture, and wall installations that engage with aspects of healing and care that shape local communities, particularly in Harlem, the artist’s longtime residence in New York. Additionally, “ongoin’” explores the artist’s dedication to artistic interpretations of spiritual rituals and ceremonies, probing the fragmented images and invisible forces often associated with such practices. Ward is known for his sculptural wall and installation works created from materials often found and collected in Harlem. The artist combines these materials and reinterprets their original meanings, creating collages that confront complex social and political realities (often around race, immigration, democracy, and community) through the juxtaposition of literal and metaphorical. Ward's work is materially explicit, yet intentionally ambiguous in meaning, encouraging viewers to explore a variety of possible interpretations.

Jason Boyd Kinsella: Ghost in the Machine | Seoul

Aug 30–Oct 19, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Seoul
Exhibitions
The core of Canadian artist Jason Boyd Kinsella's solo exhibition is to visualize the human heart and psychology. Based on subjective perspective and MBTI test, the artist breaks down the characteristics and personality of people into geometric units and defines each person's personality by changing shape, color and size, thus exploring the nature of human psychology. Three-dimensional space is a key area of Kinsella's practice. Deeply influenced by sculpture, design and architecture, the geometric shapes in Kinsella's works interact with the surrounding space and provide multiple perspectives to observe the objects of creation, thus transcending the two-dimensional level of the medium. With the advent of the digital age, people can switch between multiple identities through constantly changing appearances. Kinsella locks his subject into the essence of people's psychological attributes to reveal their true selves.

Guillermo Lorca:The Shine in the Other Room | Tang Contemporary Art Seoul

Aug 31–Oct 12, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Seoul
Exhibitions
Guillermo Lorca’s The Light of Another Room explores the subconscious feelings that shape the human inner world. Through the interweaving of archetypal images and myths, Lorca’s work delves into the mysteries of the psyche. Each work is a window into the mysterious interaction between humans and nature, depicting animals, children and female characters - they appear as preconscious beings, full of unadorned intensity and primal power. Inspired by the fact that each god, spirit or demon in ancient mythology represents a specific impulse, Lorca reconstructs these archetypes in a modern context. His characters become protagonists of new myths, revealing the secrets hidden in landscapes that are filled with danger and temptation. The works on display are both aesthetically beautiful and conceptually profound, providing a glimpse into Lorca’s inner journey and vivid chapters of his long dream. Lorca’s creative process is intricate, starting with a small spark of inspiration (usually an image), which is archived, categorized and annotated. Through a meticulous and almost magical process, these references are transformed into possibilities that fuel his art. As a result, the act of painting itself becomes a ritualized experience that produces unique objects that are "worthy of being painted." Intertwined with themes of violence, beauty, harmony, fragility, eroticism, tenderness, and magic, his work evokes a variety of emotions in the viewer. Lorca hopes that the viewer will experience a visceral sensation - a flutter in the stomach, a quickening of the heartbeat, a sense of strangeness and fascination. Viewing the paintings in person, one can appreciate the richness of detail and the shock of life-size figures, an immersive experience that is like witnessing an unexplainable story unfold. From initial inspiration to final creation, Lorca's rigorous approach to painting highlights his dedication to craft and concept. This process involves not only the accumulation and combination of visual references, but also the actual construction of models and elements that guide his artistic conception. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology highlights the uniqueness of each work, and every brushstroke and color choice contributes to the overall narrative and emotional impact. Each of the works in this exhibition embodies Lorca’s unwavering commitment to quality and artistic integrity. They are not only testimonies of his personal experiences, but also symbolic reflections of the most intense moments in his life, especially those during his childhood. The exhibition takes the viewer into a deeply personal and emotional space through an immersive approach combined with the intimate scale of Lorca’s characters. The Light in Another Room aims to transcend the traditional boundaries of art, inviting the viewer to experience the realm where the subconscious and the conscious world collide. The exhibition title itself alludes to a hidden radiance that illuminates the unseen corners of the mind, where primal power coexists with tender emotions. This exhibition not only showcases Lorca’s virtuosity, but also his ability to capture universal human experiences, which makes each work resonate deeply on an emotional level. This exhibition is a fascinating exploration of the world of Guillermo Lorca, where the boundaries between the subconscious and the real, the mythical and the contemporary, merge into a fascinating aesthetic experience. The Light of Another Room invites viewers to explore the mysterious and often disturbing beauty of the human mind - all revealed through the extraordinary artistic vision of Guillermo Lorca.
