Join TCM at the National Maritime Museum for a special event celebrating new artist commissions in the Atlantic Worlds Gallery. Event Description: Atlantic World Gallery Reimagined: A Refurbishment CelebrationDate: 4th September 2024
Time: 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Venue: National Maritime Museum, Romney Rd, London SE10 9NF The Collective Makers (TCM) and the National Maritime Museum (NMM) warmly invite you to Atlantic World Gallery Reimagined: A Refurbishment Celebration, a significant event marking the transformation of the Atlantic Worlds Gallery. This special celebration, taking place on the 4th of September 2024 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, showcases the newly commissioned works by a group of groundbreaking artists, bringing a renewed focus and fresh perspectives to the gallery’s representation of Black history. In response to the gallery's refurbishment, the AWG Board has commissioned a diverse group of artists—Karen McLean, Joseph Ijoyemi, Nadina Ali, and PoOr Collective—to reinterpret and revitalise the gallery space. Through these artistic interventions, the gallery has been updated to offer a brighter and more insightful exploration of Black history, allowing visitors to engage with the stories and experiences of the African Diaspora in new and meaningful ways. This project was made possible with the Art Fund Support. The evening will feature music by DJ Intalekt, creating an engaging and vibrant atmosphere as you explore the gallery’s new installations. Additionally, the event will include a live performance by Othello De'Souza-Hartley titled ‘Water Doesn’t Stop Flowing’. This multifaceted performance is a powerful celebration of alternative identities within the UK’s African Diaspora. It embodies the resilience and adaptability of these identities, much like water, which navigates and overcomes obstacles while carrying the weight of memory and history, acknowledging the present, and influencing the future. This event not only celebrates the refurbishment of the Atlantic Worlds Gallery but also serves as an invitation to reflect on the complex histories and narratives that shape our world today. Through the intersection of art, history, and performance, this event aims to create a space for dialogue, understanding, and inspiration. We look forward to welcoming you to this momentous occasion and sharing in the celebration of the Atlantic Worlds Gallery’s new chapter.

Book Therapy with Hazel Hayes | BASEMENT at The London EDITION
Sep 9, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Book Therapy with Hazel Hayes Bibliotherapy for Love and Heartbreak Introducing a new Aphra series in partnership with The London Edition Hotel - Book Therapy. Each month we will be bringing together writers and readers for live bibliotherapy talks, sharing books and personal stories aligning with specific chapters of life. Our first event is themed on Bibliotherapy for Love and Heartbreak hosted with Hazel Hayes, Irish author and filmmaker writing on bisexuality and love in her novels Out of Love and Better by Far.
This 'in conversation' event with Hazel will explore the books that captured her heart and influenced her writing, the books she recommends for those looking for romantic reading or heart healing, and her writing process. Hazel's writing is aptly described as for anyone who has loved and lost, and lived to tell the tale . Better by Far is a story that follows a breakup between Kate and Finn, who decide to keep sharing their house until the lease runs out in twelve weeks' time, alternating week by week so that they are occupying the same space but never at the same time. Practically, the plan makes sense, but coming back each Sunday to a home where Finn has been and gone feels far too much like living with a ghost. Kate lost her mother at a young age and now this fresh grief dredges unhealed sorrows up to the surface, and soon, Kate finds herself adrift in her own subconscious, trapped in the liminal space between loving someone and letting go.
Tickets are £15 and include a signed copy of Hazel's latest novel, Better by Far.
