40 Years of Wasafiri: An Exhibition & Two Editors in Conversation | BLOC
Nov 20, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
As part of its 40th anniversary year celebrations, Wasafiri, the leading magazine of international contemporary writing since 1984, is proud to host an exhibition, and its two editors – Dr. Susheila Nasta (Founding Editor) and Dr. Sana Goyal (Editor & Publishing Director) – in conversation for the first time. In collaboration with Angelique Golding – a PhD student on the Wasafiri archives, based at Queen Mary University of London – who is the lead curator of the exhibition, and will chair the conversation, this engaging and enlightening evening will chart and trace Wasafiri’s history, trajectory, editorial strategy, and vision over forty years. How do literary magazines survive and thrive? What kinds of editorial and curatorial choices and decisions do literary editors make, and why? Challenges aside, what role has Wasafiri played in championing and platforming new critical and creative voices from across the globe? And what stories and histories does the archive hold? The event promises to shed light on precarious and pivotal moments in the magazine's life and times, including its adaptive strategies in the face of funding challenges and political shifts over four decades, and hopes to juxtapose the magazine's past with its present and future — enriched by sounds and images from the archives. Join us for an evening of reflection and celebration – by way of the archives – as we mark 40 years of Wasafiri. When: 20 November, 2024, 7-8.30pm
Where: BLOC, Mile End Campus, Queen Mary University of London Tickets: Free, booking required. Optional donations to Wasafiri. This event is supported by the Queen Mary University of London Centre for Creative Collaboration About the speakers Angelique Golding is a LAHP Collaborative Doctoral student working with Wasafiri on our 40th anniversary projects with a focus on the archive, which forms the basis of her research. After completing a Master’s in Black British Writing at Goldsmiths University, Angelique won a studentship to undertake a PhD at Queen Mary University of London in collaboration with Wasafiri and the British Library. Her research, completing in December 2024, draws on methodologies from postcolonial, global literary and archival studies combined with book and magazine history. Sana Goyal is the Editor and Publishing Director of Wasafiri. She has an MA in Postcolonial Studies and a PhD in literary prizes from SOAS, University of London. She was formerly Deputy Editor at Wasafiri, Publicity Manager at Tilted Axis Press, and Marketing and Outreach Officer at Poetry Birmingham Literary Journal. Lucy Sweeney Byrne and A.K. Blakemore: Let's Dance | Stoke Newington Bookshop
Nov 22, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
What a treat to be hosting a conversation between Lucy Sweeney Byrne and A.K. Blakemore about the former's new short story collection, Let's Dance! In her latest collection of dark, hilarious and provocative short stories, Lucy Sweeney Byrne explores women on the brink – of love, of joy, of disaster – with her signature wit, insight and daring. A newlywed grapples with the chasm that has opened up between her and her husband on the subject of children. A young mother tries to eke out a life for her family on an island named for a dead man, unaware of the psychic toll that is taken on her by the land and sea. And a woman at a drug-fuelled house party ruminates on the dark past she shares with one of the guests. In her signature hypnotic prose, Byrne explores subjects such as physicality, identity and disillusionment. Utilising forms ranging from flash fiction to novella, Let’s Dance is a glittering display of fiction’s ability to probe, startle and entertain. Lucy Sweeney Byrne is the author of the short story collection Paris Syndrome, which met with critical acclaim and shortlisted for numerous awards, including the Edge Hill Prize, the Kate O’Brien Award, the Butler Literary Award, and the John McGahern Prize. Lucy’s short fiction, essays and poetry have appeared in The Dublin Review, The Stinging Fly, Southword, AGNI, Litro, Grist, 3:AM magazine, and other literary outlets. She also writes book reviews for The Irish Times. A. K. Blakemore is a poet and novelist from London. Her first novel, The Manningtree Witches, won the Desmond Elliott Prize for Best First Novel and was shortlisted for the Costa and RSL Ondaatje Prizes. Her second novel, The Glutton, was published by Granta Books.

LPFF 2024: Azza El Hassan Book Launch | Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre, SOAS
Nov 22, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
The Afterlife of Palestinian Images is a groundbreaking study of how colonial violence alters and changes visual objects - which in turn affects how a society and culture relates to its own images. Based on the practice-based creative methodology of Palestinian filmmaker and researcher Azza El Hassan, this book explores the re-use and re-appropriation of photos, film and media equipment that have survived looting and destruction, objects which become a constant reminder of what was and what has been lost. El Hassan goes beyond using these visual remains as simple evidence, demonstrating how artistic engagement can reconfigure them into new narratives and establish a renewed sense of cultural identity. While previous research has explored why colonial structures practice native archive plundering, as well as into how a culture reckons with the absence of archival records, this book uniquely addresses how plundered cultures relate to the actual remains of their archives. As a scholar and an artist, El Hassan reconciles a problematic past and present in the search for a new visual experience emerging out of the ruins, finding ways to move forward after destruction. Azza El Hassan is an award-winning filmmaker whose works include The Unbearable Presence of Asmahan (2014), Kings & Extras (2004), and News Time (2001). She is the founder of The Void Project, an artistic exploration of the effect of looting and destruction of Palestinian visual archives on the formation of a modern Palestinian visual narrative. She received her Ph.D. from Sheffield Hallam University, UK, and is a visiting professor of practice at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies in Qatar.
