Talk event - Tokyo Through Time: Hanga Prints in a Changing Capital | The Hall, Japan House London
Nov 1, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
When you think of Japanese woodblock print-making, you likely think of the 18th-and-19th-century greats: KITAGAWA Utamaro, KATSUSHIKA Hokusai, and UTAGAWA Hiroshige are all well-known around the world for their ukiyo-e works, but the art of woodblock printing continued to prosper well beyond their times. In fact, the artform thrived well into the more modern times of the 1920s and 1930s, evolving beyond ukiyo-e along the way, with a number of its artists using it to express their own unique takes on the liveliness of a newly-modernised Tokyo. In this special talk event, KOYAMA Shuko, curator at the Edo-Tokyo Museum in Tokyo, will give an illustrated talk on hanga (woodblock print) works, with a particular focus on the 1920s and 1930s and the ways in which the artists of this time captured the changing city of Tokyo, while also comparing this more modern hanga to its ukiyo-e predecessors. This event is organised in celebration of the opening of Tokyo, naissance d'une ville moderne (Tokyo, the Birth of a Modern City) at the Japan Foundation's Maison de la culture du Japon in Paris. Organised by the Japan Foundation in collaboration with the Edo-Tokyo Museum.
Supported by Japan House London.

Workshop - Hybrids & Hyperdimensional Objects | 10 Bowling Green Ln
Nov 1, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
During the mid-1990s into the early 2000s, Zaha Hadid’s architecture design techniques evolved dynamically and transitioned from analogue paintings, drawings and models to the use of the digital, including complex three-dimensional volumes. Her early elaborate techniques of projective distortion – used as device to show a multitude of elements in one view – were often seen to set precedent for computer-based techniques, including the deformation and the modelling of fields. In the current exhibition Zaha Hadid: Paper Museums, reliefs models constructed of cut and folded white paper, card and foamcore, represent a hybrid technique that mutates objects from drawing to sculpture, and from sculpture to structure. The models frequently become instrumental prompts for the increasingly conceptual connections between floors and landscape, enhancing and complementing Hadid’s strategy to increase the ground permeability and surface continuity. This is evident in horizontal projects like MAXXI, in vertical projects like CAC, and stretched morphologies like the Museum of Islamic Art. In the quest for a new media, certain ground manipulations like excavation, cutting, peeling and tilting, as well as complex stratifications and smoothed fragmented fields of forces, reveal ‘in-between’ processes and hyper dimensionality. This workshop seeks to discuss novel approaches to architectural design, making and researching, that dissolve and expand analogue-digital divides. The topics discussed during this workshop might include subjects like notions of craft and digital craft; imagination beyond tools and tools for imagination; the pre-digital or proto-digital pedigree (focusing on retro CAD or emerging techniques of form-giving such as ‘’trace and loft’’); generative components, morphing, reprogrammable manipulators, aesthetic assemblages, topology deformations and AI diffusion models, as well as alternative ‘’translations’’ and digital evolutions (like ‘’void modellers’’ and ‘’shape grammars’’ software). Speakers to be announced. Venue information Entry to the building:Access to the site and building is via the black metal gate facing onto the street. If this gate is closed, please use the intercom to the right of the gate and wait for a reply. The door will then open automatically. Accessibility: Our building is step free and wheelchair accessible. There is a 7cm step from the street to our main entry gate. Please contact us in advance if you require the use our step-free alternative entry gate. We have accessible and gender-neutral toilets. Assistance dogs welcome. Filming: Commerical photography, the use of tripods and private filming is not permitted. ZHF will be taking photographs of the event, please inform staff on the day if you do not wish to be included in any photographs.

BFI Art of Action with Live Orchestration - Buster Keaton’s The General | Theatreship
Nov 1, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Theatreship is proud to partner with the BFI for 'Art of Action' - a season of iconic films celebrating the artistry of real action choreography. Over six nights, we will spotlight the genre through the ages, from early pioneers to new cult classics. Each event will feature a live performance in response to the film and introductions providing behind-the-scenes insights.
The event features ‘The General’ - the Buster Keaton silent classic with jaw dropping stunts and live orchestration from award-winning pianist and composer Ieva Dubova.
The General Directors(s): Buster Keaton and Clyde Bruckman
US, 1926, 78 min
Rating: U The General was inspired by the Great Locomotive Chase, a true story of an event that occurred during the American Civil War. After being rejected by the military, not realizing it was due to his crucial civilian role, an engineer must single-handedly recapture his beloved locomotive after it is seized by Union spies and return it through enemy lines. The film will be introduced by film maker Natalie Hill, to showcase the work of Buster Keaton’s co-star - Marion Mack. Often overlooked, she performed stunts to the same calibre as Keaton. Ieva’s score will be a unique, live accompaniment to the film and exclusive to this Theatreship and BFI event. She will also share insights with the audience of her inspiration for the score and how music is critical for all action films.
Ieva Dubova is an award-winning Latvian pianist and composer, celebrated for her innovative blend of classical and contemporary music and known for her live scores to silent films. A graduate of Trinity Laban Conservatoire and Newcastle University, Ieva’s work has been performed at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and featured on platforms including BBC Introducing, BBC Sounds, Resonance FM, and Exile FM.
Her compositions, notably her Preludes, have been praised by the International Alliance for Women in Music Journal as “inventive and evocative,” showcasing her ability to fuse tradition with modernity. Her graphic scores are also housed in the prestigious Lit & Phil Library in Newcastle. This October, she will release her latest album, Undercurrents, a minimalist exploration with subtle influences from blues and jazz, reflecting the natural soundscapes of the Scottish Outer Hebrides. Additionally, her upcoming project with electronic music artist Alien Alarms further exemplifies her role as a leading voice in contemporary music. Experience her transformative soundscapes at this exclusive BFI event. ______________________

Megagame - Secrets of Arkham: The Beast | N20 8NX
Nov 2, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Secrets of Arkham - The Attack Event: Secrets of Arkham - The Attack Date: Saturday 2nd November 2024 Location: N20 8NX Join us for an epic adventure at Secrets of Arkham - The Beast! Dive into the mysterious world of Arkham and uncover its hidden secrets. This in-person 20-40 player Megagame will immerse you in a thrilling storyline filled with twists and turns. It's Arkham City in the 1920's and it's always been a strange place. The cities authorities try to keep things running whilst gangs and cults manipulate the city to their own ends and the Arkham Advertiser seeks to uncover the truth and report it to the people. The latest story is about a series of attacks that have taken place on the outskirts of town but that seem to be moving dangerously close to the city limits. The origin of these attacks remains elusive, arguments over what kind of creature it is and how it evades capture permeate the town, with demands for city hall to do something and the people starting to look to any faction who claims they can help. Take on the role of a prominent figure in the city of Arkham such as the Mayor, a Private Detective, Hospital Administrator, or the Head of Science at Miskatonic University as well as many more. Try to keep your faction running and the city afloat whilst eldritch forces assert their influence, though your allegiance to them may waver over the course of the day. Players will be contacted in advance to assign teams and roles, teams range from 2 to 4 players so if you are signing up with teammates you want to play with do let us know when contacted. If you're unfamiliar with the Megagame structure it is essentially a big group rpg / board game hybrid, up to 45 players simultaneously playing the same game with an emerging narrative, each team and maybe even player having their own objectives within. This newest iteration of the game Secrets of Arkham builds on the design of the previous two plays and adds a lot more, so is somewhat experimental hence the donation ticket price. But don't be mistaken, this will be a fully formed game, we aim to give you everything we've done before as well as so much more, this experimental status does not mean the game will be any less than the previous two runs. We would appreciate you paying whatever you think is fair but honestly we just want to play the game and get it polished to a beautiful shine so we can run more frequent events next year, so all we ask is if you sign up please do come and play. Get ready to face challenges, solve puzzles, and make tough decisions that will impact the fate of the city of Arkham. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to experience the Lovecraftian horror from inside!

Yasmine Anlan Huang and Diyou Yu: Weighty is the Wood, Tender is the Night | Small Gallery 斯磨畫廊
Nov 2, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
As part of ‘London is Calling: Emerging Artist Initiative,’ Small Gallery is proud to present a two-person exhibition Weighty is the Wood, Tender is the Night 木與夜孰長. What draws together Yasmine Anlan Huang and Diyou Yu is a deep fascination with time. Yasmine brings to this exhibition her lastest installation series Bad things happen, not only in literature (2024), where vintage, displaced objects re-emerge as a site where multiple layers of the past co-exist. In Yasmine’s single-channel video installation, Her Love is a Bleeding Tank, an eye becomes a theatre. Time, in a little girl’s theatre of life, finds a different kind of configuration. Light creeps into walnut wood in the blink of an eye. Time is folded into the pages of Diyou’s artist book While You Were Absent, Flowers Blossomed, a project that is all about waiting, a process wherein the apparitions of flower petals might even surprise their creator. The exhibition opening includes the two artists’ guided tour within the gallery space. Please R.S.V.P. via Eventbrite if you want to attend the opening. Schedules Saturday, 2 November 2024 2:00 pm door opens 2:30 pm – 3:15 pm two artists’ guided tour 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm reception About the Artists Yasmine Anlan Huang (b. Guangzhou, China) is an artist and writer migrating from cities to cities. Diving into the complexities of ingénue or shōjo archetype across diverse cultures, her works dedicate to uncover hidden power structures and decolonize storytelling. She orchestrates a polyphony that blends past and future, fiction and reality, sublime and absurdity, innocence and violence. With a fusion of personal cosmology, classic literature, historical archives, youth subcultures, and everyday objects, she crafts emotive worlds through moving images, texts, performances, and installations, all serving as surrogates for her hyper-vulnerability — she is also interested in how digital spaces swallow up and regurgitate life experiences. Huang’s works have been featured internationally, including Whitney Biennial 2024, Power Station of Art, Peckham24, HART Haus, Tabula Rasa Gallery, with solo or duo exhibitions at Floating Projects, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Seoul National University Woosuk Gallery and Goethe-Institut Hong Kong. She has been awarded residencies in Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, Wassaic Project, Penland School of Craft, among others. Her writings and translations appeared in Heichi Magazine, p-articles, SAMPLE Mag, and many other platforms. Her debut book of poems and essays, Love of the Colonizer, has been published by Accent Sisters.
Huang received her BA (Hons) in Creative Media from City University of Hong Kong, an MA in Literary and Cultural Studies from the University of Hong Kong, and an MFA from Parsons School of Design. https://www.yasminehuang.com/ Diyou Yu is an artist and printmaker based in London, UK, and Shaoxing, China. She has a training background in drawing, analogue darkroom printing and intaglio printing. She finished her MA Print program at Royal College of Art 2021 and is one of the recipients of Augustus Martin Award upon her graduation. She has exhibited in London and internationally. Participated exhibitions include Summer Exhibition 2022, RA, London; Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2021, 2022, 2023, London; 'Booked' International Hong Kong Book Fair 2021, 2023, 2024, Hong Kong; Artists as Independent Publishers 2021 at Weserburg Museum, Bremen. Diyou's works have been responding to the impermanent fact of things. Blooming flowers, water, moon, clouds and ashes are motifs in her work, which symbolise the fact of change, and other signifiers have been collected to imply impermanence. The works themselves are also referring to the temporary standpoints of herself when she found the temporary solutions and composures among the inevitable changes. Analogue darkroom printing, etching, drawing, obsolete, relatively repetitive, and time-consuming methods are used to rewrite, translate, and then represent those replicas of temporary tranquil moments to audiences. https://www.yudiyouchayachandra.net/ About the curator Panpan Yang's academic, creative and curatorial work centres on the redefinition of spaces and the interplay between different media. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago and is currently a lecturer (assistant professor) in the arts and visual cultures of modern China at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. From 2023 to 2025, she is the Principal Investigator of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) research project on calligraphic imagination in contemporary Chinese art and emergent media. She has collaborated with Diyou Yu on the artist book Handscroll (2024), recently exhibited at the 2024 Hong Kong Art Book Fair at Tai Kwun Contemporary. https://www.yangpanpan.com/ About Small Gallery 斯磨畫廊 A 1920s semi-detached period house transformed into a gallery, Small Gallery is a not-for-project experimental art space in North London. Small Gallery is named as such not only because it is literally small but also because 'small' sounds like sīmó 斯磨, meaning 'intimate' in Chinese. It represents a close working relationship, an alternative to the commercial model of mainstream galleries, and an effort to decolonise the contemporary practices of exhibition and display. Small Gallery is only a three-minute walk from Totteridge & Whetstone Station. The textures of the stones strikingly resemble the letters in the English alphabet. Together, the stones spell out 's-M-A-l-l G-A-l-l-E-r-y.' Acknowledgement Small Gallery gratefully acknowledges the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) which generously funds the exhibition and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London for institutional support.
