Ulrich Erben: Shadow in Light | Galerie Bastian
Nov 23, 2024–Feb 8, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Berlin
The gallery exhibits new paintings by Ulrich Erben. The artist, who lives and works in Düsseldorf, is one of the most important pioneers of abstract painting in Europe. His early works, characterised by his exploration of landscapes of the Lower Rhine and in Italy, lead to an exploration of the relationships and interactions between colour, light, tone and harmony. In Erben’s work, landscape becomes a “vessel of memory”. The perceptibility of space can be seen as another central theme in the artist’s work. Erben opens up monochrome colour spaces, some of which are reduced to the absolute neutrality of white.

FRACTURA | Theater X
Nov 24, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Berlin
Fractura is a scenic and immersive audiovisual exploration that establishes symbiotic relationships between music, dance, visual space and light - a collaborative work by argentinian dancer and choreographer Miranda Codesal and visual artist and director Paula Monesterolo, swiss film maker Jonathan Jäggi and musician Simon Grab. The piece is inspired by the destruction of ecosystems caused by the extractivist capitalist system, specifically focusing on the oil extraction process called Fracking. This method illegal in many countries worldwide is currently in use in Argentina. It has direct effects on biota and the population causing precarious living conditions immersed in these new anthropogenic landscapes. Fractura creates a dystopia, a space where a rupture occurs in the natural balance, in temporal frameworks, a system failure opening an energetic channel to a liminal space where life becomes toxic. A dense and noisy atmosphere gives life to a creature: a cyborg born from those depths. The creature explores the new space – presented by the visuals of landscapes and fragmented images of a city in continuous transformation – either framed by the screen or projecting itself within it. The lighting with sharp beams of white and red light invades a dark atmosphere and extends the body of the visuals. Fractura aims to explore new ways of understanding the relationships between the organic and the inorganic, creating a mutant body that demands new modes of perceiving, feeling, interacting, desiring and loving to adapt to these changing times. Fractura is a transdisciplinary experience that invites reflection on a possible common destiny: collapse as a catalyst to a new order and a new way of navigating the present.

Who has not ever wished to slip into a painting of earlier times, to meet the people there and to learn how they lived at that time? The exhibition “Rein in the painting! A journey through time for children" invites children and families, one of the four famous Augsburg monthly pictures from the 16th century. century to discover. Like in a pop-up book, they immerse themselves in the painting and the life of time. People depicted in the painting become storytelling figures and opening up access to the four themes: people, play, trade and nature. But did life really look like this 500 years ago? What does the painting tell us about the past and what does it not show us?
The Other Impressionism: International Printmaking from Manet to Whistler | Berlin

Do you really know what Impressionism is? It is against this background that the exhibition comes into play, presenting rarely exhibited works by well-known artists, as well as new discoveries that have not yet appeared.
This different kind of Impressionism - going beyond painting - brings atmospheric moods to paper with new or rediscovered printing techniques. The artists depicted impressions of shadows, steam and smoke, mist and rain, night and electric light. They experimented with clichéd primitive photographic techniques and used sunlight to expose their hand-painted glass plate negatives. In abstract black and white etchings, they painted vibrating lines to capture the fleeting reflections of light on moving water. The depiction of shadows, of immateriality, especially appealed to lithographers to create picturesque and mysterious impressions.
