Theater
Crossness Pumping Station played a crucial role in Victorian London’s sewer system, and for one special evening, three musicians and three artists invite you to reflect on purification, cleanliness and morality. Experience three new performances all incorporating live music in dialogue with live art-making. Musicians and artists have been brought together to perform in pairs, the musicians playing the artwork” that the artist is making, while the artists visualise the music” that the musician plays. Up first, harpist Anna Phillips and visual artist Curtis Donovan combine a purity of sound with that of geometry. Then enjoy a real-time encounter between the dynamic compositions of vocalist J Cocoa and painter Charly Helyar. Finally the mesmeric and murky Vibin n Marblin (vibraphonist Jackie Walduck with paper marbler Chloe Cooper) invite you to partake in a communal purification ritual. The event will take place at the Royal College of Art in London. Helen Drutt will take us on a visual journey documenting international exhibitions in the field (1968-2024) which began to flourish after an initial meeting with Graham Hughes in Dublin. There will be a glimpse into the role Peter Dormer played in encouraging Helen's deep commitment to the crafts after they met in Oslo. From the Wendy Ramshaw/David Watkins exhibition which introduced them to America (1973), Ruth Duckworth/Claire Zeisler (1979), the seminal Robert Arneson: Self Portraits (1979) and Poetics of Clay: An International Perspective (2001-2003), to exhibitions at The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia (2014); Beauty and the Unexpected at the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, Sweden (2023-2025); and concurrently Bracelets, Bangles and Cuffs: 1948-2024 at the Metal Museum, Memphis, Tennessee, USA will be explored. Like Bernard Berenson Helen's greatest greed is seeing—observing—and bringing those works “captured” into the public forum. Yoko Tawada, the award-winning, critically acclaimed novelist of The Last Children of Tokyo, Scattered All Over the Earth and Memoirs of a Polar Bear is visiting Libreria to discuss her new novel, Spontaneous Acts. In Spontaneous Acts, Patrik is a literary researcher living in Berlin, a city just coming back to life after lockdown. Though his beloved opera houses are open again, Patrik cannot leave the house and hardly manages to get out of bed. He is supposed to give a paper at a conference in Paris, on the poetry collection Threadsuns by Paul Celan, but he can't get past the first question on the registration form: 'What is your nationality?' As Patrik attempts to find a connection in a world that constantly overwhelms him, he meets a mysterious stranger. The man's name is Leo-Eric Fu, and somehow he already knows Patrik… Yoko Tawada's mesmerising new novel unfolds like a lucid dream in which the solace of friendship, reading, conversation, music - of seeing and being seen - is examined and celebrated. Spontaneous Acts reaches out to all of us who find meaning and even obsession in the words of those before us. This event is produced in collaboration with the Japan Foundation, who have kindly supported Yoko’s visit to the UK. Information Source: Libreria | eventbrite
