Acro at The Center SF: Foundations with Kadir | The Center SF
Oct 21–Oct 28, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Join us to experience acro as an interface for physical connection The word “acro” is derived from the Greek akros, meaning “extremities” – parts of the human body that we use as an interface to connect with the physical world. With this weekly recurring gathering, we will dive into a playful exploration of physics by utilizing our akros. We will interact with a diverse set of props like balls, sticks and ropes to explore finding balance, giving and receiving forces and momentum. Help create a new acro vocabulary that is relatable and hence accessible by everyone Imagine exploring foot to foot not just as foot on foot but vertically stacked and aligned bodies in any way that is your own. This gathering is an invitation to explore what lies beyond the body-centric acroyoga jargon, and break free from acro poses and patterns! An opportunity to craft an acro practice that is open to all, where a unifying vocabulary rooted in physics empowers our moves and connects diverse bodies in magical ways. Share your movement story during our movement potluck style warm-ups, witness the group translate it to their own bodies through playful exploration. Share your discoveries with the group during our choreo exercises and celebrate the joy of acro's boundless language created by everyone in the room. Bring it all the awe and excitement we generate together back to the ground with a partner massage at the end. This event blends into the second event, Acro Explorations. The Foundations and the Explorations are independent from each other so one can choose to attend one or the other or both. Participants can join the events solo, partnered or as a group. They are free to stay solo, partnered or within their pod, or change partners during the class or form new groups of more than two bodies. Join us, unite in curiosity, and move together! Price for event: $30 Early Bird, $35 day of Schedule 730pm - 930pm Bio Kadir is a San Francisco based emerging performing artist offering weekly acro classes at Center SF and Menlo Park Academy of Dance. Kadir has had an unconventional history of training in acro. Kadir's acro journey began 15 years ago when he met his first acro partner in 2008, a Japanese humanoid robot called CB2, also known as the world's creepiest robot. Kadir was tasked with developing software so that the robot could get up from the ground when a human partner pulled it by its arms, and balance with them. While working on this project, Kadir unknowingly wrote source code that laid the foundation for his acro practice. In 2015, Kadir co-organized a 3-day yoga festival on the college campus with over 1,000 participants. There were no acro classes in Turkey at the time, so Kadir ended up teaching a series of acroyoga workshops before he took any acro classes himself. Kadir was born in Istanbul, the beautiful city that gave San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge its name. In 2016, he immigrated to SF. Since then, he has helped facilitate weekly acroyoga classes and offered workshops at various locations in the city, including Aerial Artique, SF Pole & Dance, Bay JiuJitsu, Yoga Tree and Yogaworks. In the last 5 years, Kadir has been offered scholarships to train with Axis Dance Company and Pilobolus Dance Company as he continued his search for an acro practice that is equally accessible for people of all minds and all bodies. Kadir is excited for the Center’s invitation to share and grow this practice with the community. ** no refunds or exchanges are available for this event - you can sell or gift your ticket to a friend**

ELIZABETH PARTRIDGE at Books Inc. in the Marina | Books Inc.
Oct 23, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Join local author, National Book Award finalist and Sibert Medal winner Elizabeth Partridge at Books Inc. in the Marina to learn about her fabulous new picture book GOLDEN GATE; a thrilling look at the process of building San Francisco’s iconic landmark! The Golden Gate Bridge, beloved landmark and symbol of San Francisco, finally gets a gorgeous picture book that tells the thrilling story of how it was built!
Across a treacherous strait where deep ocean waters rip back and forth with the tides, and during the depths of the Great Depression, daring teams of engineers and builders set out to make something many thought impossible.
Begun in 1933 and officially opened on May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge and its awe-inspiring and groundbreaking construction are truly a testament to the power of hope and perseverance. Told from the point of view of the lighthouse keeper’s kids, who watch in fascination as the trucks and crews arrive and steel towers coated in heavy red paint begin to rise above the tempestuous water, Golden Gate shares a thrilling visual perspective on each stage of the breathtaking project.
Young readers can look and learn as each turn of the page reveals dazzling, color-soaked artwork paired with text that blends factual details into the narrators’ keen observations. By the final spread, where fireworks explode in celebration over the mighty bridge, the tale is complete—not only of an astonishing feat of engineering but of the potential of human ingenuity to defy the odds and make the impossible possible.
EXTRAORDINARY NONFICTION BOOK FOR KIDS: Painstaking research went into the writing and illustrating of this story, making it an outstanding resource for learning about an American engineering marvel. The author’s afterword summarizes key facts and offers a powerful reminder of why the Golden Gate is beloved around the world as one of the most beautiful and inspiring bridges ever built.
AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR: Elizabeth Partridge is the acclaimed author of many books for young and young adult readers, including Seen and Unseen, Parks for the People, and Marching for Freedom, as well as biographies of Dorothea Lange, Woody Guthrie, and John Lennon. A Story of Football, Rivalry, and Revolution: Mike Silver with Steve Young | Jewish Community Center of San Francisco
Oct 23, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Co-presented with Jewish Community Center San Francisco Bang Bang, Niner Gang! From award-winning SF Chronicle journalist Mike Silver comes the inside story of the brilliant, hypercompetitive young NFL coaches who threw out decades of received wisdom to fundamentally remake America’s most popular sport. When Kyle Shanahan became the NFL’s youngest offensive coordinator in 2008, he had one prevailing rule: Tell me the why. If a colleague couldn’t justify his position by providing the unassailable reasoning behind it, he was told to get the hell out of Shanahan’s office. Shanahan and the members of his coaching tree—Sean McVay, Mike McDaniel, Raheem Morris, and Matt LaFleur—are now NFL stars and coaching revolutionaries. With The Why Is Everything, Silver draws on unmatched access across the league to take us into the key moments of how it all happened, and in the process gives us a timeless account of friendship, rivalry, and the never-ending pursuit of perfection. Silver will be in convo with 49ers legend Steven Young. Doors at 6:30PM. $17 adv (book bundle avail.) / $20 door

66th Ever Bay Area Pun-Off, October 24th | The Faight Collective
Oct 24, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Some say it's an affliction; we call it comedy... The Bay Area Pun-Off is a bi-monthly sold-out San Francisco comedy staple: holding together a diverse community of wordplayers and countless unfortunate bystanders (and sitters). Bolstered by groans, eye rolls, and the ever-sought-after double-handed facepalm, we're 8 years strong with equal parts ironic triumph and gleeful apology. At the Pun-Off, we are proud to invite you to celebrate the contagious power of the pun, the lowest form of comedy, the highest form of intellect; a prized tool of parents, kindergarten teachers, Facebook trolls, and Witzelsucht patients everywhere! NOTE TIME: Doors open at 6:30 pm // Main events start at 7:30pm AUDIENCE: please get a General Admission ticket. *Any combo of the below tickets can be arranged with a note directly to organizer... PERFORMERS/COMPETITORS: Performer tickets come with a free drink and a chance to win other unique prizes and titles! See below for ticket instructions. Prepared Puntificators will open the evening with a non-competitive showcase of original punning on a topic of their choosing - Please keep it under 2 minutes, and do not plan to bring your phone on stage to read from. Please purchase a Prepared Puns (Puntificator) ticket. If they're sold out, they're sold out. 1 ticket per performer. Punslingers will battle fellow punsters in lightning rounds of freestyle punning on a given category.* Last punster standing could win an official hand-mei-made trophy, in addition to bragging rights (if you really want to call 'em that...) To compete, please enter the Punslinger competitor ticket lottery. The lottery will be open for approximately two weeks. Competitors will be drawn from this pool. Names not drawn will have their tickets changed to audience tickets. In the case of no-shows on show night, the emcee will select back-ups. We’ll send out an email to let you know when all the names have been chosen - you'll get notified either way. First timers very welcome - you will be well-prepped at the event**. Please grab a First Timer Only Punslinger competitor ticket. There are 3 spots reserved for first timers only. Once they're gone you may enter the Punslinger competitor lottery pool. Finally, remember: At the Pun-Off, jokes don't have to be funny, they just have to be puns. ~ The Pun-Off warmly encourages punsters of all backgrounds, identities, persuasions, and inclinations to attend. People with alternative modes of personal transportation can and will be accommodated, and we encourage a scent-free event - please be mindful with your dryer sheets, detergent scents, colognes, and perfumes. If the price is a serious obstacle, please contact the organizer to inquire about options. We aim to turn away no-buddy and we enjoy the company and labor of volunteers. Please don't contact the organizer for refunds or exchanges - our Facebook event page is a good place for such endeavors. *All categories and rules are subject to change. **Seriously, this is the warmest crowd in town. ***This is a very silly event and the judge's decisions are final.
