Discovering the Sky | The Shoto Museum of Art

Sep 14–Nov 10, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Tokyo
Exhibitions
The "sky" we see every day. In today's world, it seems to be a matter of course that everyone can draw a common image. However, in Japanese art, it was not until the early modern period that people realized the realistic depiction of the "sky". In barrier painting, the golden background and golden clouds occupied this space, while in ink painting, they were sometimes positioned as the edge. Originally, the "sky" (sora) was an ambiguous place, neither "heaven", that is, the world of God, nor "earth", that is, the place where humans live. In the early modern period, under the influence of Western painting, the blue sky began to spread to Western-style paintings, mud paintings, ukiyo-e prints, etc. In particular, the fact that Shiba Eikan (1747-1818), a painter who often painted blue skies in the Edo period, learned heliocentrism from Dutch studies and had a scientific understanding of space, is instructive for thinking about the changes in the consciousness of the sky. On the other hand, the expression was sometimes formal and conceptual, such as the typical expression of the sky in ukiyo-e, "the blur of a letter". Since the Meiji era, with the introduction of mature Western painting education and scientific weather observation, painters who tried to capture the ever-changing clouds and sunlight have emerged. However, in the next generation, under the influence of new trends such as expressionism and surrealism, painters who depicted diverse and unique "sky" will follow, as if they were injecting their own mental images into this space. At first, our perspective was usually directed to the ground, and the "sky" rarely played a leading role in paintings. When an earthquake or war occurred on the ground and human activities were destroyed, the sky scattered over the ruins or the sky you looked up at the battlefield suddenly became heavy. The large space that you were not aware of appeared in front of you, illustrating the uncertainty of cognition. In modern times, by putting the once subordinate "sky" at the center, some artists have found a way to live. You can see it, but you can't see it. Through these changes in the sky's expression, this exhibition aims to highlight the fluctuations reflected in our consciousness.

The Aesthetics of Summer and Autumn:Masterpieces by Suzuki Kiitsu and the Inen Seal Painter | Nezu Museum

Sep 14–Oct 20, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Tokyo
Exhibitions
The Heian-period Kokin Wakashū Poetry Anthology (compiled in 905) contains far more poems related to spring and autumn than to summer and winter. As that difference demonstrates, spring and autumn have long been favorite seasons in Japan. This bias in favor of spring and autumn can also be seen in art, notably in the number of works that depict cherry blossoms and autumn foliage in those seasons. While this tradition was carried on, in Edo-period art, the combination of summer and autumn, instead of spring and autumn, is also striking. That change doubtless reflects a fondness for the charms of summer. Depicting vigorous summer and waning autumn as a sequence, and thus being able to define clearly the change in the seasons, also contributed to that shift in seasonal pairings. The highlights of this exhibition are masterpieces by Suzuki Kiitsu, the Edo Rimpa School prodigy, and the studio of the Rimpa School founder Tawaraya Sōtatsu. Through this exhibition, we hope you will enjoy the shifting moods of the seasons, from early summer to late fall, while exploring various aspects of the aesthetic sensibilities they express.

MAM Project 032: Badi Darul | Mori Art Museum

Sep 25, 2024–Jan 19, 2025 (UTC+9)ENDED
Tokyo
Exhibitions
MAM Project 032 marks the first chapter of Syrian-French artist Bady Darul's (b. 1986, Paris) traveling exhibition series Land of Dreams, which will be displayed in several international venues over the next few years. Darul has become known for his work that interweaves historical events, themes of global migration, and his own Arab roots with fiction. Having imagined and created stories about fictional countries with his brother as a child, Darul initially produced works using books as his primary medium, but in recent years has expanded his practice to include assemblage, collage, and video. This exhibition recreates the size of Darul's apartment, which he first visited in 2014, and brings together works created over the past decade in that space, highlighting the central themes of encounter and migration in his work. Darul has often combined his own life story and thoughts with the personal histories of others, such as Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who died in the Hiroshima atomic bombing, and Syrian immigrants living and working in Japan today. His work is politically charged, as it depicts universal human issues that transcend borders, identities and geographical constraints, in a sharp, sometimes humorous, and multifaceted way. Land of Dreams travels backwards through the 16th century expansion of European colonialism by traveling from East Asia to the Middle East and then to Western Europe. Starting from the first European arrival of the Portuguese in Japan in 1543, the exhibition connects the various histories of these three regions and explores the route across the Middle East in response to the personal story of Darul, the son of Syrian immigrants who moved to France. Land of Dreams is a joint project conceived by the Mori Art Museum, the Jameel Arts Centre (Dubai) and the Gulbenkian Modern Art Centre (Lisbon).

Modern Haniwa and Clay Figurines | The National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo

Oct 1–Dec 22, 2024 (UTC+9)ENDED
Tokyo
Exhibitions
When did the aesthetic appreciation of excavated artifacts begin, and when did excavated artifacts begin to appear in artworks? The story of how Taro Okamoto and Isamu Noguchi "discovered" the aesthetic value of excavated artifacts, which had previously been treated as archaeological materials, after the war has become legendary. The very clear binary opposition of "Jomon vs. Yayoi" developed into the so-called "tradition debate" among people involved in architecture and art in the mid-1950s. However, since the modern era, these two are not the only people who have focused on artifacts dug up from the ground. Excavated artifacts have sparked cultural phenomena in a wide range of fields, not only in art, but also in crafts, architecture, photography, film, theater, literature, traditional performing arts, thought, and even television programs. Why did the excavated artifacts attract so much attention at one time, how did their reputation spread, and why did artists become so passionate about unearthing the artifacts? This exhibition focuses on art, tracing the genealogy of "excavated motifs" that have emerged on the stage of cultural history from the Meiji period to the present, while exploring the changes in the way people have looked at haniwa, earthenware, and clay figurines. By unravelling history and learning about its complex subtleties, the cultural and social "strata" that lie beneath our feet will emerge.
