There is a twist in traditional Gothic storytelling in Australia, where our forbidding and unwelcoming landscape imposes its influence on the story’s characters and actions. Join us for a fascinating discussion on Australian gothic crime with Josh Kemp and Karleah Olson in conversation with Kathy Heys. The Readers’ and Writers’ Festival is an annual adult literature event presented by City of Mandurah Library & Heritage Services. In 2025 it will be held from 16 – 18 January at the Seashells Resort Mandurah. The aim of the festival is to foster a love of reading and literature and encourage creativity in our community. This year the festival brings together an array of established and emerging storytellers from across WA. The free to attend three-day festival includes author talks, and panel discussions. Josh Kemp Josh Kemp is an author of Australian gothic fiction. His debut novel, Banjawarn, won the 2021 Dorothy Hewett Award, the 2022 Ned Kelly Award for Best Debut Crime Fiction and the Western Australian Premier’s Prize for Best Emerging Writer. He lives in the Southwest of WA but finds himself drawn, over and over again, to the red dirt of the state’s north. Karleah Olson Karleah Olson is a Perth-based writer and avid reader and loves to collect books – more than she could possibly read in a lifetime. Karleah has recently completed her PhD at Edith Cowan University, where she studied Australian Coastal Gothic Literature. Her debut novel, A Wreck of Seabirds, was shortlisted for the 2023 Fogarty Literary Award and is a work of YA fiction inspired by the gothic genre and the West Australian coastal landscape. She is the Head of English at Coodanup College, a position she has held for eight years. Highlights of Kathy’s reading journey include meeting Markus Zusak and visiting Jane Austen’s house. Jasper Cliff - Josh Kemp When Toby Bowman vanishes, his little brother Lachlan retraces a road trip to the last place Toby phoned from - a remote northern town called Jasper Cliff. There, Lachlan finds himself marooned at the dying town's pub, and soon learns that his brother is just one of many to have gone missing in recent years. Like Toby, his brother becomes obsessed with finding the Rift, a deep hole in a ravine somewhere in the hills. But what will Lachlan learn, and what will he see, if he stares into the Rift too? A Wreck of Seabirds – Karleah Olson Both grappling with grief and loss, Briony and Ren are brought together in their hometown, where Ren has returned to care for his dying father and Briony remains hopeful of finding her missing sister, Sarah. We open our afternoon sessions, with Louise Wolhuter, discussing her novel Shadows of Robin Winters in conversation with Teena Miller. The Mandurah Readers’ and Writers’ Festival is an annual adult literature event presented by City of Mandurah Library Services. In 2025 it will be held from 16 – 18 January at the Seashells Resort Mandurah. The aim of the festival is to foster a love of reading and literature and encourage creativity in our community. This year the festival brings together an array of established and emerging storytellers from across Western Australia. The free to attend three-day festival includes author talks, and panel discussions. Louise Wolhuter Louise Wolhuter grew up in northern England and moved to Queensland (in a roundabout way), before settling in Perth to raise a family. Author of An Afterlife for Rosemary Lamb (2022) and Shadows of Winter Robins (2024), she writes what she terms ‘twisty fiction’ with a focus on lives that creep up on people and there being more to everyone than meets the eye. She currently works as an Education Assistant in a primary school, which leaves her early mornings, weekends and school holidays to write. Shadows of Winter Robins ‘Nancy won't be coming home.' And there it is: that pip of a moment. That instant. That fraction of a second. That weightless stillness at the very top of a ball's bounce, between its going up and falling down. My brother and I held hands, suspended somewhere in between the life we'd led as Nancy's children, and the one we were destined to live thereafter.’ Winter Robins is a happy enough child, growing up in the north of England, with parents who love her and the constant companion of a twin brother, but a cold wind blows through when her mother dies. Her father turns to the bottle, her grandmother struggles to cope, and she and her brother are sent to live in Western Australia with family their mother had never mentioned. Although Winter quickly settles in Australia and comes to love her life and the people in it, she notices strange happenings in the shadows of her new home. When a news story prompts her to look back at her past, she begins to wonder whether things were really as idyllic as she remembers them. Teena Miller Teena Miller has what some might consider an unnatural enthusiasm for crime, which stems from her undergraduate degree in Sociology / Anthropology, not her family history (although rumour has it, she does come from convict stock). An avid reader, Teena has a particular fondness for Australian crime, both true and fictional and also loves dinosaurs and primates. But that’s a whole other story! Teena is Coordinator Library Services for the City of Mandurah. In addition to her Bachelor of Arts degree, Teena also has a Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies and recently completed an Masters of Business Administration (MBA). Telling your story can sometimes be a difficult and challenging task, join us as Gerard McCann and Khin Myint discuss their writing journey, in conversation with Anne-Louise Willoughby. Gerard McCann Born in the Western Australian wheatbelt town of Goomalling, Gerard grew up in the Perth suburb of Cottesloe, the second of five boys in a staunch Catholic family. After school with the Jesuits, he studied Architecture at the Perth Technical College and the University of WA. He completed an Arts degree at UWA in the 1990s, majoring in Australian and American literature. In 2012, he re-immersed himself in non-fiction writing which led to Gerard write a memoir of his childhood, which developed into a major exploration of clerical sexual abuse and its lifelong consequences. He lives with his life partner in Fremantle. Khin Myint Khin Myint's searing debut memoir explores a family grappling with the right to die in the face of a non-terminal illness. His writing has received critical acclaim and has appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald, Slate Magazine and The West Australian. Anatomy of a Secret – Gerard McCann A courageous memoir about the personal toll of seeking justice from the Catholic Church. As a boy, Gerard was sexually abused by a Catholic priest at his local church. As a grown man, he confronts the trauma of the abuse he suffered and the psychological aftermath of the experience, grappling with shame, guilt, and the devastating impact it had on his family, relationships and sense of self. Despite the pain he endured, this is ultimately a story of hope and healing, of acknowledging pain and seeking support, of honesty and justice. Anatomy of a Secret is a raw, compelling memoir that bravely shares long-silenced, unspoken truths. Fragile Creatures – Khin Myint Khin's sister Theda has a strange illness, and a euthanasia drug locked in a box under her bed. Her doctor thinks her problem is purely physical, and so does she, but Khin is not so sure. He knows what they both went through growing up in Perth – it wasn't welcoming back then for a Burmese-Australian family. With Theda's condition getting worse, Khin heads off to the United States. He needs to sort things out with his ex-partner. Once there, events take a very odd turn, and he finds himself in court. This is a family story told with humour, wonderment and complete honesty. It's about care, truth and the hardest choices – and what happens when realities clash. How do we balance responsibility for others with what we owe ourselves? Fragile Creatures will sweep you up and leave you stunned at its power.
