Shakespeare and the Slovenian School | Garrick's Temple to Shakespeare
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Hampton
Shakespeare has always been a reference point for the Slovenian School of Psychoanalysis, which grew out of dissident movements in socialist Yugoslavia. Freud’s and Lacan’s interpretations of Hamlet have been a particular focus, the title of one of Slavoj Žižek’s early books, “Looking Awry,” is taken from Richard II, and other members of the School often use Shakespeare to think through the role of representation in politics and culture. Moreover, the Slovenian School has often been involved in Shakespeare-influenced theatre projects, for instance the projects of the “Scipion Nasice Sisters Theatre” (SNST), and the “Macbeth” production by Wilfried Minks and Peter Zadek. As SNST co-founder Eda Čufer writes, “Shakespeare exposed the theatrical aspects of establishing and transgressing the law, and made transparent the structural similarities between the 'deeds' of legal authorities, criminals (terrorists) and artists (activists).” This symposium will explore the complex history of this statement and its relevance for the relation between theatre and philosophy in the present.

“Kept me frantically turning the pages and somehow made me cry at the end . . . Brava!”—Kristin Hannah, author of The Women
An epic, soaring coming-of-age story. . . .
In 1975 in the small town of Monta Clare, Missouri, there are the haves and the have-nots. Patch and Saint are two adolescents who are definitely in the have-nots. Patch was born with one eye, and is being raised by a single mother, though often it seems like he is raising her. Saint’s sole parent is her grandmother, a woman the other kids make fun of because she has short hair and is a bus driver. Patch has his stories about pirates to keep him company, and Saint has her bees.
When the two of them meet, it is clear they have found their person. But their love means different things to each of them, and over the course of their lifetimes one will gain strength from it, the other heartbreak.
When Patch saves the daughter of a wealthy family from being kidnapped, an unlikely hero emerges. And in that one moment the lives of everyone around him will be altered, never to be the same again.
Chris Whitaker has written a novel that has been hailed as a masterpiece—and rightfully so. All the Colors of the Dark shows the cost of keeping things hidden, how love can grow stronger over the years, about what lurks in the shadows of obsession and the blinding light of hope. About the author: Chris Whitaker is the award-winning author of Tall Oaks, All the Wicked Girls, and the New York Times bestseller We Begin at the End. Chris lives in the UK.

Examining and Expanding your ART Practice Workshops | RuptureXIBIT (+Studio)
Jul 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Hampton
All kinds of artists, writers included, are invited to join Kate and Sally for Examining and Expanding your ART Practice workshops, where we talk about what practice is, how to make one, how to change one, how to let go of fear, and how to stop asking if the work is good enough. Practice can be a powerful thing. It drives creative expression. It can feel distant and undefinable. Kate and their partner in practice, Sally will share what they have learned about life in the generative. They will explain how everyone, even with no training, can build a framework to support the urge and impulse to make and use inspiration and reference to find the individual generative which leads to the new. In this workshop we will ask the questions: What is it to BE an artist? What IS practice?Considering WHY and HOW we make and looking at the steps that can be taken to build and expand an individual sustainable practice. Our workshops are appropriate for artists at any stage of their development, (you don’t need to be formally trained), but involve a rigorous, transparent, honest conversation about life in the generative. We are here to help you build (or re-examine and re-build) a supportive framework for your creative practice.
Open to artists, musicians, writers, all who have or want to further their relationship to creative and acrobatic thinking. Every session is bespoke to the artists who join us, so if you’ve come to a previous session, keep coming back and the conversation will evolve with you.
