This exhibition will explore the theme of diversity by comparing mythical creatures from different cultures. While these fantastical animals may look different, they serve a similar purpose – to help humans make sense of the world. On view in Gallery 339 will be classic Chinese legendary mythical creatures—the dragon, phoenix and qilin—juxtaposed with collection highlights from Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, as well as Persia and Western Europe, to show the diversity of mythical creatures throughout the world, as well as their similarities and differences. Elaborately embroidered costumes and silver headdresses created by Miao, Yi and other minority peoples decorated with dragons, phoenixes, and creatures relating to origin myths will be on display in Gallery 326. In a third space (Gallery 321) Chinese contemporary works of mythical creatures by artists Xu Bing and Ai Weiwei show how the past continues to inform art today.

With an approach to functional design that prioritizes ease of use, aesthetic simplicity, and close attention to the ways that mundane objects and environments record our everyday habits, Tokyo-based product designer Naoto Fukasawa has been a hugely influential force in design for more than two decades. Best-known for his prior work as design director of MUJI—the Japanese “anti-brand” consumer goods company—Fukasawa has designed across a broad range of categories and media. Whether shaping electronics for a global market or collaborating with artisanal firms on fine furniture, Fukasawa advocates for a design philosophy of longevity, accessibility, and subtle humor over novelty, ephemerality, or blatant commercialism.

How might an artist puncture a culture of silence? When political debates are fraught, might saying less allow one to say more? The works gathered together for this exhibition find poetic ways to probe the histories and state of this nation, without asserting a fixed political view. The title is borrowed from the Jewish Romanian poet Paul Celan. After his family were killed in the Holocaust, he moved to Paris but continued to write in German, developing a surreal, enigmatic voice that circles around the question of how to broach the unspeakable.

About this event Get a hands-on introduction to our Risograph at The Soapbox while creating your very own Valentine's Day cards! Find out what a Risograph is, how it works, how to prepare art for it, and explore how to print with it. Over 3 hours, we'll cover the basics of burning masters, analog art, multi-color printing, registration, Riso printing quirks, maintenance, and other best practices. During the workshop, you'll create your two-color, red, and pink Valentine's design, and collaboratively print it on the Riso, and you'll leave the workshop with a stack of your design and at least one copy of the design from other participants. The size of the Valentine's will be 2.75 X 4.25. Just like the kind of Valentine's found in boxes at drug stores! Please note: Masking is now encouraged, but optional in the studio space. Individuals who feel uncomfortable using the space with others unmasked, whether for health or any other reason, are welcome to request mask wearing while they are using the studio space. About the Instructors Corey Bechelli draws comics and makes zines. This exhibition, the largest of Christina Ramberg’s work to date, will illuminate the artist’s encyclopedia of imagery exploring experiences of gender, sexuality, and normative ideals of female beauty. Born in 1946, Ramberg has tended to be associated with the Chicago Imagists, a loose fellowship of artists in the mid-1960s who made vibrant work inspired by popular culture, from comic books to low-budget films and store-front displays. However, her exquisitely detailed, kinky aesthetic has always set her apart. Ramberg consistently worked in pursuit of a “coherent visual statement”, honing in on feminized aspects of the body and its erotic trappings: hairstyles, hands, corsets, shoes.
