Hear international guests Nikki Lam and Phuong Ngo of Hyphenated Projects introduce their work as curators and arts organisers through the lens of the Artspace Aotearoa 2024 annual question “do I need territory?” Hyphenated Projects is a Naarm Melbourne based artist-led network nurturing practice in Asian diasporas. Their work focuses on supporting artists who operate with the hyphens—culturally, socially and geographically. This kaupapa is presented in association with the Satellites’ visiting artists programme. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A. Booking is encouraged but not essential. BIOGRAPHIES Nikki Lam is an artist-curator and filmmaker based in Naarm Melbourne. Working primarily with moving images and text, her work explores memory through contemplation on time, spaces and impermanence. With an expanded practice, she is currently co-director of Hyphenated Biennial and Hyphenated Projects, an artist-led network that nurtures practice in Asian diasporas. She also co-runs Slow Burn Books, a bookshop that circulates independent art publications across Asia-Pacific. Nikki is a PhD candidate at RMIT University. Phuong Ngo is an artist and curator living and working in Naarm/Melbourne. He is co-director of Hyphenated Projects, Chair of un Projects, a member of the Substation curatorium and holds a PhD from RMIT University. His practice is concerned with the interpretation of history, memory and place, and how it impacts individual and collective identity. Through an archival process rooted in a conceptual practice, he seeks to find linkages between culture, politics and oral histories and historic events.

Bookings are essential so get registered today! Girls Skate NZ aims to empower girls through skateboarding, an activity that boosts confidence, mental toughness and physical health. Students are taught how to skate in a warm and friendly environment where they can feel safe and progress at a level that is comfortable for them. While learning the basics of skateboarding, students will also be taught the correct safety measures and skatepark etiquette to prevent injury. Each class has an average of 20-25 girls attend. With 3-5+ coaches there to lend a hand. As the students arrive we split them into several separate groups with a coach. The groups they get put in are based on their skill level and age, or with the coach we think will be the most beneficial! Classes are open to all ages and abilities, with free skateboard, helmet and safety gear hire available.

Your visit will help us to raise much needed-funds for NORTHART. The guided tour starts promptly at 10am and finishes at 2pm. The celebrated Gibbs Farm rests on 400 hectares of re-formed farmland on the Kaipara Harbour. The privately owned park is home to an internationally renowned collection of large-scale sculptures by some of the world’s leading artists, commissioned and curated by Alan Gibbs over the past 30 years. 🎟️ Adult Price: $90 See HERE to become a NORTHART Member TRAVEL & PARKING: BY CAR: We strongly recommend carpooling to ease congestion at the gate and reduce the impact on the environment. Please access Gibbs Farm via the main entrance (2421 Kaipara Coast Highway) to minimise traffic congestion etc. TERRAIN: The terrain is hilly and steep. A full circuit around Gibbs Farm is a 3-4 hour walk on both grass and the paved pathway and you can expect to walk 6-7km over the course of the day. There are large ponds and lakes across the site and children will need to be supervised. There are also various animals at several locations on the property. ESSENTIALS: The weather is changeable so be prepared for all conditions and be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hat, sunblock, water and wet weather gear. The day will continue rain or shine. LUNCH & COFFEE: Pack your own picnic lunch. FACILITIES: Basic portaloo facilities are available in various locations on site as well as a purpose built multi-unit accessible facility at the Giraffe House. TICKETS: Make sure you have proof of purchase and it is ready to present at the gate. There is NO WIFI so you will not be able to download it on-site.
